To ask if you take any supplements and if so what difference have they made?

Several friends seem to have jumped on the supplements bandwagon recently (collagen, magnesium, creatine) and I'm wondering how worthwhile they are.

Have you notified any positive effects or side effects?

I take 3 in 1 magnesium, ashwanga, Vit D with K3 and Omega 3.

The magnesium and ashwanga defo make a difference. I only know this as I didn’t take them on holiday and slept terribly. Which granted could be down to a few things but I think the supps definitely help.

Ive just had my cholesterol done and my HDL is very good which I think is aided by the fish oils.

Collagen seems to make my nails stronger and hair grow. I stopped for just over a year after seeing Dr Chris or Xand talking to someone sciencey who said it was a waste of money.
Started again three months ago and my hair is growing thicker, my hairdresser commented on the regrowth and my nails have stopped breaking.

I take magnesium, ashwagandha, vitamin D regularly and try and have kefir daily. If I don’t have kefir I notice I’m more prone to indigestion and thrush. Magnesium makes some difference to sleep but don’t find it magic sleep potion some folk do. It does help reduce muscle and joint aches after exercise. Ashwagandha is the one I really notice if I have a few days off - anxiety sky rockets and can’t cope with stress. I notice low moods if I don’t have vit D. Bit concerned about the comments re liver damage above!

They do with Spatone as it's very easy to absorb as already dissolved in water.

I was on the verge of having a blood transfusion after a bad caesarian due to v low iron, they had me on iron tablets for 5 days with no result then a friend brought me spatone and after 3 sachets my levels shot up overnight.

Blood transfusion called off.

I've sworm by spatone ever since especially during and after a heavy period.

I’m glad you feel it’s worked for you - and I’m sorry you had such a horrible experience with the Caesarian - but if you were on iron tablets for 5 days then I’d assume that may have played a role in your levels eventually shooting up. As I say, the advice I’ve heard is that it takes about a week for you to start feeling the benefits of iron tablets. I think in order to know for sure it was the Spatone, you’d have had to have taken the Spatone only.

It can take a while to feel the effects of iron/folate, but when you stop the supplements, you feel your levels dropping. I'm prescribed folic acid and I'm not great at reordering my prescriptions. By day four, my symptoms start to come back.

I take Glowwa meno hair supplements, after my hairdresser recommended them. I have no hair loss and some regrowth. I'm only on my third month. My nails now need filing down and have stopped peeling. I'm cutting my toenails more often, so I know they are doing something.

My DD started using Nutrition Geeks supplements, last year after another lingering chest infection. This winter she hasn't been ill. She works on hospital wards. She's also having daily veg/banana smoothies.

Magnesium gummies
Menopause gummies
Vitamin D
Turmeric & black pepper
Biotin
Immune system gummies
Pycnogenol
Cod liver oil

I don't know if it's all in my head but I have a joint condition and restless legs that are so much better since I started taking them. My hot flushes have also reduced significantly.

I took collagen for a few months and even after only a week I could see my skin improve. My face looked healthier and was glowing. It doesn’t take away wrinkles btw, but it does help fine lines. I took the highest recommended daily dosage (powdered or liquid) - which was a lot more than you get in the capsules. But after a while I found the taste and smell made me feel really sick. I was completely put off and never took it again, the thought of it still makes me feel queasy. I’d do it if it could be injected, just don’t want to smell or taste it. No idea how people stomach it in their coffee!

I just started taking the Nutrition Geeks collagen powder and I do feel a bit sick after drinking it. I've had it twice now, once in apple juice and today in tropical juice. It dissolves but does leave a bit of an aftertaste and makes me feel a bit sick!

I've also just started taking magnesium (for sleep) and ashwaganda and lions mane root for my moods (hormonal).

Iron makes a huge difference to my energy levels.

Creatine: it's been about 7 weeks and I don't think I'm seeing a difference, but I will know better when I stop taking it.

Vit D : I'm not sure you see an immediate difference but over several months I think you willajve a happier winter than without it.

Spermidine: ( yes really!) I think I look younger

Magnesium: I get to sleep more easily

Chromium picolinate: reduces sugar and carb cravings.

Spermidine is a new one. Will have to look that one up 😂

I bought some women's health ones and didn't notice any difference at all.

Then as I was adding them to my doset box I realised they were for women's vaginal health. I hadn't noticed any change in my fanny so either they didnt work or my fanny was perfectly happy 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Sorry but this made me laugh!

Please be aware that you should only take ashwagandha for a very short period of time as it can damage the liver.

I hadn't heard this.

This is what worries me. Just because something is "natural" or a "supplement" doesn't mean it can't be harmful and we don't all need the same amounts of everything.

I have turmeric as I got it free with my NG order but I do wonder whether I'm better taking some supplements every other day rather than every day or at certain times of the month. Does anyone have any insight on this?

Thanks everyone.

I have the following from NG - collagen, biotin, ashwaganda, magnesium, lions mane root, turmeric, D2 and K3 (?) but I do feel I need to do some research. The magnesium seems to help me sleep and I'm interested in what the collagen might do.

I stir collagen powder into my morning cup of tea, it seems to disperse better in a warm drink. I found it vile in cold fruit juice. It seems to improve my aching joints.
Magnesium had no effect at all but I think my poor sleep is due to finding my job very stressful as I'm better when I have a week off work.

I take:
Vitamin D Difference - my GP doesn’t tell me to take vitamin D anymore!
Zinc Difference- improves my sense of taste.
Bontella Difference - Unsure. It may be helping with night sweats, but that may just have been colder nights over winter!

I’m on some medication that impacts my tastebuds and increases the chance of night sweats. Both the zinc and Bontella were at my health care team’s suggestion. The vitamin D is at my GP’s recommendation because blood tests show a deficiency (which my GP says is pretty ubiquitous nowadays). I’m sure it does more for me than get her off my case, but not in anyway that I can feel. The rest of my bloodwork is good so I don’t bother with a general vitamin supplement or anything.

edited to add - I have a pretty good diet though. Very varied with plenty of fruit and veg, whole grains, fish and healthy oils.

Edited

I’m on medication that causes night sweats as well - what’s the bontella? I googled it but couldn’t find it! Thanks xx

Collagen. After three months, I no longer have old lady hands, just middle aged lady hands. That's good enough for me.

fartotheleftside · 07/04/2026 14:00

I blend a quick fruit and veg smoothie in the morning and add collagen into that, it's completely untasteable.

Aside from that I take a combined iron, vitamin c and folic acid tablet. Can't stand the taste of spatone, it tastes like blood

Vitamin d + calcium
zinc
magnesium
probiotic

Haven't felt the slightest bit of difference from any of them but hopefully they're doing something...

Pleasenotequila · 07/04/2026 14:02

Menopace +. Stopped my hot flushes so very effective for me. Also collagen although I’m not sure if that’s doing anything or not

hypnovic · 07/04/2026 14:12

Yes creatine especially helps me as does magnesium and a 7 mushroom blend. More energy less brain fog better sleep less fatigued

TrustTheProcess · 07/04/2026 14:13

Started taking biotin and the new hair growth I got was insane! Almost past the stage where it's constantly sticking up on top of my head haha 😂

I don't drink any hot drinks so that's why I've resorted to juice. I could try hot water but then surely plain water will be worse. I've read on the packet you can try porridge so that could work but I don't eat porridge every day. I'm sorry your stressed with work.

I can imagine it would be ok in a smoothie but again it's not something I do daily but maybe I should!

I was having marine collagen. Wasn't sure if they were making any difference..Then I heard something on the radio where the experts say there's no evidence that the pills can do what they're claimed to do so I won't be buying any more now.

The iron tablets did not help my iron. They were taking blood every 12 hours and the final reading was still very low. Then I took the spatone and the reading 6 hours later was back to normal levels.
Even the doctor said it was the spatone.

Iron in tablet form is notoriously difficult for the body to utilise at all.

ThePoshUns · 07/04/2026 14:21

In the morning I take a multivitamin that’s is combined with a probiotic.
i take the Jude supplement for bladder health and this is making a big difference.
i do take collagen, I don’t think it necessarily does much for my skin but it’s an easy way of getting more protein on board.
I take magnesium in the evening.
Am thinking of giving creatine a go as well.

DefiantRabbit9 · 07/04/2026 14:22

I'm mainly taking supplements because I'm pregnant and an epileptic so my baby is already at a disadvantage.

Currently my retinue consists of:

DHA
Iron
Vitamin D
Pregnacare Max

I can't say I notice any difference but physically baby is looking well so I'll take the win.
