To ask if you take any supplements and if so what difference have they made?

Several friends seem to have jumped on the supplements bandwagon recently (collagen, magnesium, creatine) and I'm wondering how worthwhile they are.

Have you notified any positive effects or side effects?

Multi vitamin and omega 3 to cover anything I’m missing from diet
vitamin d as I’m deficient and work underground
iron as my iron saturation is low

It's a massive industry and the vast majority are not needed. Most are a waste of money at best.

I'd only take something if I had been diagnosed deficient based on testing at the doctors.

I have a friend who buys so much in Holland and Barrett I’m surprised she’s not invited to their staff xmas party!
she Buys into it all and spends a fortune! Does she look amazing? 10 years younger -
not really but she is happy!

Magnalux · 07/04/2026 00:52

Anyone tried the sisterly woman’s multivitamin ? It a one stop shop for female multivitamins allegedly! I’m very tempted but it’s crazy expensive

namelesswench · 07/04/2026 00:53

Vitamin D through multi vitamin supplement. I had my blood work done 15 years ago and was severely defficient (thanks Scotland). Had it done a year ago or so and it is at 100%. I also take biotin which i think helps my hair/nails, but I can't be sure if it was that or having a child that caused my tiny brittle nails to start growing.

Shatandfattered · 07/04/2026 00:59

Vitamin d3k2 spray
B12 and biotin
Iron+
Magnesium
Inositol (d-chiro myo blend)
Creatine
Tumeric black pepper tablets
Probiotics

I have PCOS plus some unknown issues re very poor sleep hygiene, crunching joints for my whole life, exhaustion, low mood and motivation and poor cognitive health and I've religiously took these for months and have managed to consult with my doctor and get off sertraline from 250 tapered to 50 then stop. Don't feel physically well as of yet but mentally it's much clearer

Loads 🤣

I take 2000mg monolaurin every day. It’s from coconuts and a powerful natural antiviral, since taking it I hardly ever catch bugs that are going around, and if I do I get over them really quickly. My immune system used to be shockingly bad before I took it. I also never get cold sores now.

Also reishi mushroom - I have high blood pressure and am on meds for it, but at a low dose as with taking this supplement too it’s under control. My blood pressure does get higher if I don’t take it.

Magnesium for sleep - it does help.

Lions Mane - to help with perimenopausal brain fog. I have noticed a difference since taking it.

Boswellia serrata for my arthritic knees. This stuff is amazing, cheap as chips and I’ve gone from being in agony at the end of each day to literally no pain at all.

Hey Nutrition menopause complex. I swear by this stuff - it has really helped with my crankiness and lack of sex drive. I don’t take HRT as I am managing fine with this supplement.

Probiotic every day, not sure if this helps or not but I know having a healthy gut is important.

Multi vitamin and vegan omega 3-6-9 oils, because I’m a vegetarian and I’m sure my diet doesn’t always provide me with everything I need.

TeaAndTattoos · 07/04/2026 03:14

I only take vitamin D I was told by my GP to take a daily maintenance dose after treatment for severely low vitamin D the main difference I have noticed is that my periods are regular and normal and no long hit and miss I also don’t feel as tired or in pain all the time.

boydoggies · 06/04/2026 22:46

I tried collagen for as few months but didn't really notice any change.

I do take magnesium, ashwganda and lions mane. I do think it helps my overall sense of calm and focus.
I buy from nutrition geeks.

Please be aware that you should only take ashwagandha for a very short period of time as it can damage the liver.

Zanatdy · 07/04/2026 03:24

Yes I take loads, peri menopause is hitting me hard. One thing i’ve noticed and had compliments on since I started collagen is my skin is glowing (it is called glow up!.

Collagen
Vit D (taken daily since covid)
Turmeric (for bad hip)
Glucosamine (as above, hip)
Vit C
Vit B complex
Magnesium (sleep is terrible, don’t think they do anything)
Omega 3 (just started this week)
Biotin (came free with collagen powder).

I am rattling, and feel like crap. Starting HRT next week, hopefully that will help.

Turmeric can also damage your liver. Personally I take magnesium (nutrition geeks) helps keep me regular, as far as sleep goes- well I’ve woken up from a hot flash and and now here so….

pepayfelix · 07/04/2026 06:58

a good quality multivitamin
cod liver oil
probiotic
collagen

I don’t know what each one is doing specifically but I haven’t been ill for months and months, and I have two young DC. I started taking them after a long bout of back-to-back illnesses, broken nails, hair falling out, etc. I do feel miles better now.

MyballsareSandy2015 · 07/04/2026 07:07

menopace multi vitamin - def helps my mood, I feel low when I stop it and I’m generally a very upbeat person (late 50s)

glucosamine & chondroitin with turmeric and ginger - great for my joints. If I forget to take it my sore knee comes back.

EssaDiTractor96 · 07/04/2026 07:14

I take three.

Vitamin D after a bug knocked me out for ages last October. Haven't had even a cold since - unusual for me - while colleagues have dropped like flies

Magnesium - effects are definitely cumulative, but since I started taking it a year ago, I have never had such good quality sleep for the last 10 months

Bio kult probiotic. I notice if I don't take this for a few days.

I bought some women's health ones and didn't notice any difference at all.

Then as I was adding them to my doset box I realised they were for women's vaginal health. I hadn't noticed any change in my fanny so either they didnt work or my fanny was perfectly happy 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

You've made my day already with this!🤣

BatshitCrazyWoman · 07/04/2026 09:20

I've had cancer, and a fair few things are contraindicated - turmeric, for example.

I take vitamin D and calcium (prescribed)
K2
Sage (oncologist approved!)
Collagen (oncologist approved)
Magnesium glycinate (for restless legs and sleep, oncologist suggested it)

Considering I've been through chemo, surgery and radiotherapy, I feel really well!

Weeelokthen · 07/04/2026 09:21

Magmessium has changed my life

MaryBeardsShoes · 07/04/2026 09:22

I only take a generic women’s health multivitamin. It’s a daily vitamin but I only take it 2 or 3 times a week as I’m sceptical but what if does help? Hedging my bets.

Monolithique · 07/04/2026 09:25

Calcium plus vit D and K. From boots.

I think its improved my hair thickness.
Hopefully it's improved my bone density and/or will prevent osteoporosis. Not had any tests that would prove this either way though

BillieWiper · 07/04/2026 09:26

I have been prescribed b vit complex, multivitamin and mineral (24), thiamine, folate. I used to take magnesium and still use it sometimes on my skin to help me sleep.

They helped my neurological pain in my legs and feet, regulated my temperature, gave me more energy, stopped my nausea, brought back my period. So they've definitely helped!

Thecows · 07/04/2026 09:49

Vit D, omega 3 fish oils, plant sterols to try and lower cholesterol, calcium, iron, creatine and collagen, no idea if any of it works tbh. I have absorbtion issues though so want to try and boost a few things.

JoeTheDrummer · 07/04/2026 09:52

I’ve found a VitaminD supplement (I have one from BetterYou which is squirted on the inside of the cheek) has vastly reduced my irritability!

popcornandpotatoes · 07/04/2026 10:07

I take a variety of supplements and find them brilliant. It is expensive though as i buy good quality ones. I had some private blood tests following a health diagnosis two years ago so some supplements are to counteract deficiencies like vit d and b12

I take two supplements to help with cholesterol as i am on a medication that increases cholesterol
I take amino acid complex after exercise
I take digestive enzymes to help with bloating and protein digestion (various tests I've had show I don't digest protein well)
Berberine for liver support and blood sugar management (on meds that can impact liver)
Magnesium has been life changing for sleep
I also take ginko baloba in winter for circulation as I get very cold sore hands

I've never felt better tbh. For most of these I can easily see the results and if I try something and don't see any results after the first bottle I generally won't carry on so all these are tried and tested

Edit forgot creatine too when I go to the gym

Lottapianos · 07/04/2026 10:09

Vit D3 and K2 - for bone health
Magnesium glycinate - really helps restless legs at night
Omega 3 - optician said my eyes are way less dry than 2 years ago, also long term brain health
Creatine - just started, I strength train 3 times a week, hoping to increase muscle strength and endurance

Also on HRT - oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone - feeling so very much better than I was

I've heard from multiple sources that collagen supplements are a scam - what you need to do is increase your protein intake in your diet

Morepositivemum · 07/04/2026 10:40

Vitamin D and biotin (hair was very lacklustre and the biotin has done wonders) . Tried magnesium and used to wake up horribly, feeling groggy and headachy and had very vivid dreams.

I’ve started eating more eggs, meat and cheese for protein and more dark greens and drinking more water and definitely feel a bit of a difference in terms of tiredness and general well-being but that could be a placebo (but happy with a placebo effect too😅) but waiting for bloods and secretly hoping iron is low enough that I need a supplement as this level still doesn’t feel normal
