To have let my kids leave a note to neighbour

I have 2 primary school aged kids who are football mad and are always playing in the garden. I try to male sure they are not too loud and never allow them out too early in the morning.
Im afraid sometimes balls get kicked over the neighbors fence though. They are very sorry when this happens and say they'll try not to do it again. The neighbor always throws the balls back into our garden.
Yesterday my kids asked if they could write thw neighbor a thank you note for always giving their bals back and apologising to them and give him an Easter Egg. I let them do it s I think its a nice thing and it shows they have empathy. I let my 8yo write the note and he rang the doorbell. Neighbor didnt come to the door so they left it on his doorstep.

I think that’s a lovely thing for your children to have done and if my neighbour’s children did that, I would really appreciate it.

That's a lovely gesture. Nothing unreasonable in it

Im not from the UK originally and thought it wss maybe seen as an invasion of privacy or something.... so im glad you think that!

It's like that advert where they lob a bar of Dairy Milk over the fence: "you can keep that one"

Very cute.

Has someone said it's unreasonable?

OopsyDaisie · 05/04/2026 13:19

My husband didn't think it was unreasonable, but I didnt read the note just asked what he had written on it and they went to ring the doorbell on their own. So I was worried the neighbour would think they were being intrusive or annoying...

Lovely and thoughtful 💕

It’s a lovely thing to do.

I’d have read the note and made sure it was decipherable: but my eldest is four, maybe I wouldn’t feel the need at 8!

Well I think that's lovely, and I'm a grumpy sod! You sound like a nice family.

Outside of MN most people don’t have a problem with people knocking their door occasionally!

youalright · 05/04/2026 13:27

That's lovely because it is a pain in the arse having to keep going outside to throw balls back i tell the neighbours kids to just come get them, themselves now instead of knocking and honestly they've been so sweet about it they always shut the gate behind them.
