AIBU to want cafes to be dog free after grandchild was bitten?

What to do? Took my 12 year old gc into a cafe for lunch today, and a dog
snapped her ankle as we walked by. It drew blood. No idea why it picked on her.
She did nothing beyond walking in the door.

The dog owner 'fled the scene' as it were. Made a hasty exit while he had the chance and everyone was looking at the injury.

Wouldn't it just be better if we kept dogs out of what really should be an exclusively human area?

The argument that "they are allowed here so suck it up" is wearing thin.
We are all very fed up of your dogs in human spaces. The vast majority of us would prefer a dog free space.

Why not complain to the cafe owner whose policy it is to allow dogs then, rather than calling people selfish who have done nothing wrong?

Because it’ll make no difference whatsoever, the cafe owner will look blankly and tell them, they own the cafe and decisions.

On here they can name call and moan from behind a keyboard.

Imdunfer · 05/04/2026 14:18

I've just come back from a trip out on the bus for lunch.

Two dogs belonging to one passenger were blocking the aisle. I have no idea which one pissed all over the floor.

It seemed like an appropriate day after this thread.

I'll just sit back now and wait for the dog lovers to accuse me of having made it up.

PistachioTiramisu · 05/04/2026 14:19

Love the way that the dog haters who say 'all dogs smell' won't acknowledge the fact that many children smell too! And it is a particularly unpleasant 'smell'!!

What shop were you in? I assume it was a shop?

Augarden · 05/04/2026 14:21

Four women came in the cafe I was in yesterday, EACH with a dog, and they (the dogs!) were constantly yapping at each other. They were just getting takeaway coffees thankfully, but one of them could have waited outside with the dog pack! Couldn't have a conversation while they were there.

I have noticed a big difference in recent years on how people feel about leaving their dog at home. It didn't used to be a big deal at all, now the poor wee darlings can't cope without their owner for a couple of hours?

BiteSizeByzantine · 05/04/2026 14:23

ILoveDaffodills · 05/04/2026 03:27

Me too.

Out and about. Not smelling them near the food.

MyFAFOera · 05/04/2026 14:23

I hate the dogs everywhere but honestly I've decided not to worry about this issue anymore because I'm pretty sure it'll resolve itself in about 5-7 years...

Everyone I know who got a lockdown pooch now thoroughly regrets it as they are stuck with a poorly trained anxious dog they can't leave for more than 10 minutes or it chews up the sofa. They've not been on a decent holiday in years 'because of the dog'. All my friends have said much as they love the dog to bits they will not get another when it dies because it's all been such hard work and it's such a tie, not to mention expensive.

So I'd reckon give it a few years and you'll find there are markedly fewer dogs about.

BoogieTownTop · 05/04/2026 14:20

What have any shops got to do with my post? And if they had, what difference would that make to dog piss running down the floor of a bus?

They dont reek of dog smell. No child smells so badly that you'd notice on the next table unless they're an extreme neglect case. I love dogs but wet dog smell is horrific. Dog owners are like smokers and think no one can smell dog smell.

WhatNoRaisins · 05/04/2026 14:27

I've never been around a noticeably smelly child, even before I had my own children I might have found noise irritating at times but I've never thought they smelled.

Me neither and I don't like unruly children in cafes either but I've never thought one smelled.

Wow, that quite some achievement! Small children are often whiffy in my experience!

It does make a difference! If enough people complain owners review their rules.
Thing is a lot of people don't like to make a fuss, I've complained and now 2 businesses refuse dogs as other people complained to.

I'm a dog owner, I totally get why non dog owners don't want pets in cafes.

Utter rubbish children don't smell, not remotely such that they could be compared to dogs 🙄

For one thing most children are bathed or washed either daily or at least multiple times a week, nobody I know is washing their dog daily and dogs tread in all sorts and eat shit. They also slobber on themselves. Dogs leave a smell everywhere they go, pet owners have just got nose blind to it. It's disgusting

MyFAFOera · 05/04/2026 14:34

The best way to approach it ultimately is vote with your feet. I just don't go in any cafes that allow dogs, it's unhygienic and I just won't entertain it so they've lost my money.

I check before I go somewhere now, and if I see the words 'dogs welcome' on the website then I'm going elsewhere.

SquirrelMadness · 05/04/2026 14:36

I think if the market isn't catering to you, that suggests you're in the minority. If the majority of people wanted dog free cafes then surely there would be more dog free cafes. I don't have a dog so I've got no skin in the game.

Onleemoi · 05/04/2026 14:40

Don’t confuse them with sound logic.

CK13v · 05/04/2026 04:20

Well thankfully one badly behaved dog doesn’t get to speak for all- same as badly behaved children.

And the drawing blood through clothes and footwear?

Likely that the child had skirt/shorts on? Bit just above the shoe probably! Surely you could work that out though 🤔

Children are people though - when do they stop smelling to you? Is it on their 18th birthday? Do you think you smelled unpleasant as a child?

And yet the vast majority of catering businesses in my rural locality allow dogs. Although some do exclude children. So happy to live where I do.

mydogisthebest · 05/04/2026 12:08

I have had 15 dogs over the years and not one of them has slobbered nor did they smell.

Not all dogs slobber or smell you know. Some breeds don't moult, some don't smell. They can have different types of fur/hair.

It's just so ignorant to say they all slobber and smell

Ah bless dog owners always beleive that about their dogs.

But they do smell - the dogs and often the owners too.

it’s much the same as how smokers don’t realise they smell.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 05/04/2026 14:46

BlakeCarrington · 05/04/2026 14:30

They really aren’t unless they need a nappy change or been all sweaty. I’ve known much smellier adults to be fair.

but cafes are meant for humans. Not dogs. Dogs are animals/pets.

I don’t mind dogs as long as they’re well trained and don’t jump on me, lick me or go near my kids. I do t want them brushing against me in shops and tongues out in cafes. It’s gross. I’m also fed up of the poop everywhere we go.

i know there’s some good owners out there and I’m thankful for them. But some people are not good owners and some expect everyone to want to be near the dogs. The beach is the worst. When they coming running over and sniff you and your food and walk all over the blanket…owner smiles and says oh he only wants to to say hello!! Argh. I’ll come running over your stuff shall i? Mess up your stuff and lick your food???

thankfully this time of year the dog free areas start popping up on beaches and gardens so much easier.

but @OhSoTrue i hope your gc is ok

AgnesMcDoo · 05/04/2026 14:47

PistachioTiramisu · 05/04/2026 12:26

They will grow out of it, yes, but there will always be more of them to fill the gap. My dog does not slobber or smell - we keep her clean and she is amply fed and watered. When we take her out, people fall over themselves to come up and say hello to her, stroke her and give her a treat. They are not all the same.

It does smell. All dogs do. Their owners are just so used to it they can’t tell.

BlakeCarrington · 05/04/2026 14:47

Mithral · 05/04/2026 14:43

Yes!! Of course. As a young child and as a teenager, I was whiffy. C’est la vie!

BlakeCarrington · 05/04/2026 14:48

In teacher training I had to have windows open at all times because teenagers properly pong! All those hormones.
