AIBU to want cafes to be dog free after grandchild was bitten?

What to do? Took my 12 year old gc into a cafe for lunch today, and a dog
snapped her ankle as we walked by. It drew blood. No idea why it picked on her.
She did nothing beyond walking in the door.

The dog owner 'fled the scene' as it were. Made a hasty exit while he had the chance and everyone was looking at the injury.

Wouldn't it just be better if we kept dogs out of what really should be an exclusively human area?

The argument that "they are allowed here so suck it up" is wearing thin.
We are all very fed up of your dogs in human spaces. The vast majority of us would prefer a dog free space.

Of course she did. There’s a thread like this every other week and it’s obvious that they’re posted by someone who detests dogs.

You don’t think that someone experiences a negative dog incident every other week?

LOL. I like dogs in general . I am very fond of a few dogs in particular.

But yesterday alone I witnessed a dog aggressively react to a child on a scooter, 3 dogs milling around amongst cars in a busy car park (under a ‘dogs on leads’ notice) holding up the traffic queue, dogs shitting on a nature reserve, no attempt to pick up, dogs charging under cordoned off area for rare ground nesting birds on the beach etc etc.

People can like, even love, dogs and still be sick to death of badly trained dogs , bad owners, and the fact that they are everywhere.

And people are allowed to post about it.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 05/04/2026 10:26

In USA apparently they ban dogs from cafes/bars and restaurants. Wonder why?

Halfadoy · 05/04/2026 10:26

I rather doubt that the child was just walking past the dog, it was probably playing up and being a nuisance. The dog was probably scared.

I find it strange that some dog owners are adamant that the OPs post is untrue and that the majority love seeing dogs in cafes restaurants and shops just because some people want to interact with their dogs.
They don't think that the silent majority just keep quiet and put up with it because we have no choice.
All my local independent cafes allow dogs. If I want to go out for a quick lunch I have no choice but to go to one that allows dogs.
When I was growing up no one took dogs into places serving food or shops. I don't understand why they have to go into them now. And I can't see how it's much fun for the dog either

The "silent majority" is a weird, made-up concept. If they're silent how do they know they're the majority? I can seethe silently with the best of them (not about dogs) but I don't assume everyone is seething silently along with me.

On the other hand dog owners will have first-hand experience of seeing how many strangers are enthusiastic about their dogs. And cafe/pub owners will actually have crunched the numbers to find that being a dog-friendly establishment is better for business than banning dogs.

I’m sure it varies from state to state and within states.

How is it being a selfish idiot to take a dog somewhere they are allowed, even welcomed?

A dog does not need to go into a place where it could be welcomed. These dogs bark a lot and are protective (breed trait), the boy dog I actually think might have been to a dog friendly cafe but the girl wouldn’t like it and may snarl. And yes they’ve been well trained. The girl dog is far happier at home or in the park (she’s old now, 15) than at a cafe or restaurant or bar.

I have gone into cafes because - and only because - there was a beautiful dog inside, and a free table next to it. I thought I might get to pet it and I did. I didn't even particularly want a coffee!

There is always a nice atmosphere in dog friendly places. Owners and staff are so lovely, they always have a nice chilled vibe and dogs seem to bring so much joy.

My dad is also a certified round dodger so he definitely gets it from him 🙄

Well you can’t blame that poor dog then! 🤣🤣🤣

I’ve seen kids show themselves up in cafes, far worse than any dog has. Maybe ban both, especially those who use buggies to prohibit others. rudeness isn’t specific to dog owners.

The difference is children are people dogs are pets . Babies and children can't be left at home alone. Dogs can.
Cafes are designed for people not dogs.
Why do some dog owners compare children with dogs and hint that they should be treated the same?.
They aren't the same and of course they have different rights.

AI Google says most states do not allow dogs, I can’t link that. I quite like dogs. Wonder why they are banned?

Yet they allow guns….. odd!

Apparently it’s health reasons why dogs aren’t allowed inside.

Because they want the custom.

Do they walk him there, I have seen a cat on a leash once!

Yes they sometimes walk him on a lead. Most of the time he is on the man's back on a sort of shelf on top of a backpack. He is a maine coon so a big fluffy cat.

They eat in the cafe in Lincoln Cathedral quite a lot

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 05/04/2026 10:38

I haven’t actually asked but where I live there’s at least 10 cafes, not counting pubs, bars, and I have no idea which allow dogs inside or not. Local Facebook group doesn’t mention it in posts. There’s one plant shop/cafe which allows dogs and has photos of dog patrons with names on its walls. A few cafes and pubs have outside areas, gardens. There is one very popular cafe, I’ve never seen a dog there inside afaik but have seen them outside there on pavement tables. There’s another nearby cafe which has a resident dog, dogs are allowed there and in the sister cafe nearby.

Yup, be thankful for all these dog owners that are spending money in cafes/pubs etc and keeping people in employment. 🙂

Lurkingandlearning · 05/04/2026 10:39

ILoveDaffodills · 05/04/2026 03:26

I'm very sorry about your granddaughter & the distress it has caused you. Is there any CCTV in the cafe?

however, cafes are a business & are entitied to run them to make a profit & if dog owners are the ones spending the money that's who they're going to cater to IF people objecting to dogs being there were the majority, that's what they'd go with.

I don’t know but I suspect, unlike other health and safety issues where a customer might sue a cafe owner if injured, their right to allow dogs on the premises will be seen by them as coming with no responsibility. A bite or trip caused by the dog or its leash will be argued to be the responsibility of the dog owner, who will likely not hang around to accept that responsibility.

It’s a grey area (maybe) because until fairly recently animals were not allowed in places that sold food. I think at the very least business owners should do is put a sign on the door saying it is an animal friendly place, so people can choose whether to go in or not. Perhaps they aren’t doing that because they know it will put people off including some dog owners.

OneNewLeader · 05/04/2026 10:39

As a dog owner, I don’t feel the need to take my dogs into cafes. I’m not convinced dogs enjoy it either. As an owner, if you can’t leave your dogs for a few hours, work on that.

I do understand as a cafe owner wanting to limit barriers to entry is probably a driving force for more dog friendly places.

Similar to toddlers in restaurants, not everyone loves this.

Mycatsasuperstar · 05/04/2026 10:40

I dont think all places need to be dog free but I do think people with harmful dogs need to be held to account. You must have seen and been near many many dogs but out of all of them its this one dog that was aggressive. So its this one situation that needs dealing with and that one dog owner needs to be called out. If we employed an all or nothing approach to everything ( which we do tend to do for most things) it creates a divide and antipathy amongst people. Sorry your DGC was bitten and hurt but that dog owner shouldn't have been allowed to just slip out.

Me and DH have a fairly unusual breed of dog and he is stunningly gorgeous (yes I am biased but many many people tell us he is). We cannot go anywhere without people commenting on him, asking what breed he is, asking what his name is, wanting to stroke him. We genuinely cannot walk along a street or go into a cafe or restaurant without people speaking to us about him
