AIBU to be horrified by Charles and Camilla visiting the US?

LunaTheCat · 04/04/2026 23:42

I am just horrified Charles and Camilla are going to US ? Does anybody else feel the same way. ( I am sure they are not relishing the thought either 🤣).
Likely British “soft diplomacy’ and they are going at request government.
Trump has crossed a line into fascism .. there is a point at wish you draw a line in the sand and I think the current US regime is the line.

It’s early days, they aren’t moving to China which is what was happening and both Canada and Mexico have a Trump problem. I am not saying it’s going to work but what really will not work for the USA is if it can’t roll over it’s debt. Then all the US global firms are in trouble.

Russia has transformed it’s industrial base by being at war and the USA is planning on doing the same in my opinion. This isn’t over in 2 to 3 weeks.

Maybe not China, but very much moving to India. Definitely out of the US.

Trump is in awe of Charlie-boy, just because he's a king, which is obviously how the Orange Shitshow sees himself.
However, I really wouldn't be surprised if the clown embarrasses himself by criticising the UK while giving one of his 'stream of bullshit' speeches.

Exactly this! 😂

I acknowledged our own bad people by saying we don’t need more from other places visiting us, but yes, you can keep your Royal Family who are full of sex offenders, liars, scammers and adulterers.

Well, in fairness, @LittleTown is not wrong.

I personally wouldn’t be moving anything to India in this situation. Trump doesn’t always tell the truth but he’s been consistent in his messaging to American companies and many foreign firms are already moving production to America.

LemonyCurd · 05/04/2026 11:20

You’re being ridiculous. But I’m not surprised, based on the other threads about the States.

The US is a democratic country, and a major ally.

2024 called and wants its politics back.

Indeed. Trump will pull out if NATO on this and claim Greenland.
He knows Europe won’t/csn’t go to war with the US over it

The move to India and shutting down of operations in the US has already happened/ is happening. Trump is not good for US economy whatever he himself is saying.

What difference does it make if they don't go to the USA? (for perspective, I don't think the UK needs a royal family, I want us to be a republic)

Edited

If they just didn’t go? Nothing. If it came out that it was floated as a possibility and they refused to go because Trump was the president? I’d read that as “FUCK YOU FOREVER, AMERICA” and be pissed off. The relationship - good or bad - between the two countries existed before Trump and will exist after Trump, and it would be hugely shortsighted to disregard decades of close alliance over one man who’ll be out of office in a few years and probably dead in a few more.

What you guys - sorry, “you lot” - on Mumsnet never seem to understand is that Americans, by and large, really like the British. We had each other’s backs in WWII, which is not as far in the distant past as it may seem when millions of children of WWII veterans are still alive. You gave us a lot of our artistic culture and pop culture. We love listening to your accents. We flew our flags at half-mast when the Queen died and we woke up at insane hours to watch your royal weddings live. We don’t do that for anybody else. You’re like the big brother who used to pick on us, but now we’ve grown up and we think you’re awesome, even when you get on our nerves. The reason the phrase “special relationship” stuck is because it resonated.

Elizabeth II always understood this, and fortunately, Charles does too.

It would simply be a 'fuck you Trump' imho.

A lot of us see no need or purpose for the royal family.

And the world will NEVER forget the USs behaviour and acquiescence during Trump's premiership.

LOL, Britain subjugated the globe to the point that “the sun never set on the British Empire,” but you don’t see us vowing to NEVER forget and stew in our historical grievances.

HelloPossible · 05/04/2026 13:13

I know, production has been moving abroad for decades, I am just saying at this point in time , I wouldn’t move production to India , your firm has .It’s not as if Trump hasn’t spelt out he is very unhappy with things like the carry trade and wants to see push back which there now is.

just pointing out that there is policy here and something companies have to think about, many have moved from Germany to the USA for example and these moves are often incredibly quick.

But the occasion isn’t about Trump, is it? It’s about the US’s 250th “birthday.”

If your sister is having a landmark birthday and you skip the party because you can’t stand the guy she’s dating, it’s all well and good to claim, “I didn’t skip your party because of you! I skipped your party because I can’t stand your current boyfriend!” But long after the boyfriend has been tossed on the rubbish heap of history, your sister is always going to remember that you blew off her big day because your animosity towards her boyfriend outweighed your affection for her.

Maybe the royals will be issuing an apology to the orange one and offering an explanation, who knows? And yes, plenty of significant sex offending men in the US who need to be brought to account re the Epstein files😐

The fact that major US firms move their operations out of the US should worry all Americans. Trump has been in power long enough now to have managed to avoid for that to happen if they had confidence in him and his economy.

If her boyfriend was a rapist and paedophile, I'd be hoping some day she would understand my reasons.

If her boyfriend was a rapist and paedophile, I'd be hoping some day she would understand my reasons.

Yes, it’s a ridiculous analogy because in this scenario you’d be being publicly hosted by said rapist, shaking hands with him, sitting next to him in photographs while knowing he’s also violently attacking other people while impacting their human rights, cost of living and risking nuclear war. Not just the average pedophile going out with your sister then…

Also, the people that think that Trump’s recent impacts can just be easily reversed should he / his cronies be voted out are living in cloud cuckoo land. Not to mention his attacks on an impartial and secure voting system…

Also - tell the loved ones of people that have died due to the regime that…

If her boyfriend was a rapist and paedophile, I'd be hoping some day she would understand my reasons.

Personally, I’d make a brief appearance at the party anyway, just so the boyfriend couldn’t spin my non-appearance as, “see, they don’t care about you - it’s us against the world. I’m the only one who’s really there for you.”

But whether the analogy works for you or not, it’s diplomatically stupid to piss off the population of a country that, historically, really likes yours.

And you understand the realpolitik of this visit more than ‘horrified’ idiots who don’t have the slightest idea about how power and diplomacy work.

In a very unstable world, this visit is a win for Britain.

He hasnt got a lot of choice I wouldnt have thought, he has to be a political.

I would hardly think they're looking forward to it

Definitely this, I'm sure they don't want to go but need to. Not going would cause even bigger problems.

hahabahbag · 05/04/2026 22:32

The tour was by invitation of the president when he visited here, the date was set months ago before this current madness. I’m pretty sure they would rather not go but I suspect the soft diplomacy the king has in his arsenal could be a last ditch attempt to persuade Trump to stop this, no one else has but his is in awe to our monarchy

DdraigGoch · 05/04/2026 22:49

Meadowfinch · 05/04/2026 00:59

This, exactly. Trump is just a temporary pimple on the face of the US and will soon be gone. The state visit is about much longer term relations between two nations.

I could have believed that it was a one-off when he first got elected. Now that it's happened twice it's clear that the US is never more than four years from electing a lunatic.
