AIBU to be horrified by Charles and Camilla visiting the US?

I am just horrified Charles and Camilla are going to US ? Does anybody else feel the same way. ( I am sure they are not relishing the thought either 🤣).
Likely British “soft diplomacy’ and they are going at request government.
Trump has crossed a line into fascism .. there is a point at wish you draw a line in the sand and I think the current US regime is the line.

I kind of agree. Russia invade Ukraine and we rightly cut as many diplomatic and financial ties as possible. America kidnaps Venezuela’s president, practically starves Cuba, threatens Greenland and starts bombing Iran and we barely tut. It’s such a double standard.

We don't rely on having a political, economic, military, intelligence and trade relationship with Russia in the same way that we do with the US.

They're not going because they enjoy his company; Trump won't be around for much longer and it's a relationship bigger than any one monarch or politician. I expect plenty of foreign dignitaries weren't exactly thrilled at the prospect of meeting Boris Johnson.

I think the king will get ‘sick’ just before they go and have to cancel but they just don’t want to tell Trump they’re pulling out.

What an incredibly dim thing to say.

Horrified seems a bit dramatic

Hopefully, King Charles will bring Trump a tacky gold award. He is easily swayed by shiny things. Feel sorry for the royals having to put up with that demented nutcase. Apologies from the USA.

It's ok. Charles is also a demented nutcase. They'll probably get along famously 😂

The US is a democratic country, and a major ally. The Government requires the King to go.
Whilst we may not like certain elements/people in the US, the King and Queen are visiting the nation to celebrate the 250th anniversary of their independence from us. They are not visiting just one individual.
I'm sure King Charles will handle the whole visit absolutely correctly and appropriately.

Unfortunately, it's becoming less democratic by the day under Donald and his sycophantic cabinet. He also makes it very clear that he no longer views the UK as a major ally because our Government hasn't capitulated to all his demands to send our troops to attack Iran alongside the US military.

As the people Trump surrounds himself with are as awful as he is, there is nobody to rein him in so fuck knows what he will say about the UK during the visit.

2024 called and wants its politics back.

The US is obviously still a democracy. Trump seems to have no fixed idea who his allies are, but the US as a country is certainly an ally. Deep intelligence sharing ties, etc. It’s the country that Charles is going to visit.

Very weird that one message he’s probably hoping to underline is the dangers of unaccountable monarchs though!

Yep. Trump will be out of office in a few years, but speaking as an American, I would never forget it if Charles and Camilla refused to come to the US.

What difference does it make if they don't go to the USA? (for perspective, I don't think the UK needs a royal family, I want us to be a republic)

Nope, it’s their job. We need to keep the best relationship possible with the US as one day this shit show will be over.

Mumberjack · 05/04/2026 07:19

As if Trumps going to treat the UK any better following a visit from those two.

MrThorpeHazell · 05/04/2026 08:17

Given the world situation, I cannot think of a better time for them to go.
Plus, the UK needs a relationship with the next POTUS and I don't see the Dems taking over, so let's get started now.

Tanyyya · 05/04/2026 08:20

Time to take a proper stand against Trump. Same dithering happened in Hitler’s Germany with European governments not really knowing what to do and wanting to keep relations. Trump is creating daily chaos on the global stage and is complete deranged in the way he talks of other countries, world leaders. We should not sit at the dinner table with this guy. Big mistake.

I agree, although if they refused to go we'd probably be treated even worse.

I acknowledged our own bad people by saying we don’t need more from other places visiting us, but yes, you can keep your Royal Family who are full of sex offenders, liars, scammers and adulterers.

Your president is all of those things in one person 🤣

BarMonaco · 05/04/2026 08:29

I don't envy Charles having to deal with Trump as a 77 year old undergoing cancer treatment.

Oh I realise this, I’m not naïve, I just meant how we’re allowed to condone some countries for their actions, but not others because it would be too politically or financially inconvenient for us. It’s all a farce.

Boredwiththeoldusername · 05/04/2026 08:36

It smacks of the Duke of Windsor and Wallis visiting with Hitler imo. Looks like theyre trying to appease the orange twit. They should steer well clear of Trump

And the world will NEVER forget the USs behaviour and acquiescence during Trump's premiership.

Dorisbonson · 05/04/2026 08:47

Pulling out the visit probably won't help, Trumps ego is driving some of this madness, he needs to feel big and like he is a strong man.

At the moment he is after any deal however bad (which he can claim as a success) which gives him an excuse not to put troops on the ground. Making the threshold for the type/concessions of deal higher by snubbing him doesn't help.

You might want to read up on what the British have inflicted on the world in the past approximately 300 years. The damage and suffering far outweighs anything the US is currently doing.

Here is some reading to get you started:

Well that didnt take long, did it!! 🤨

HelloPossible · 05/04/2026 09:39

I think they have to go unfortunately, my opinion the USA is acting far more strategically than we are reckoning. All to do with keeping the USA’s massive debts rolling over. Trump isn’t in a hurry to sort this out if he gets more customers for American oil and gas at a higher price. Trump also wants to re industrialise his country so this situation is perfect for that to happen. It really is American first.

Not sure the re industrialisation is working. I work for a US global firm who are a closing down operations in the US on a big scale and moving them to Canada and Mexico.

It’s early days, they aren’t moving to China which is what was happening and both Canada and Mexico have a Trump problem. I am not saying it’s going to work but what really will not work for the USA is if it can’t roll over it’s debt. Then all the US global firms are in trouble.

Russia has transformed it’s industrial base by being at war and the USA is planning on doing the same in my opinion. This isn’t over in 2 to 3 weeks.

This is a good example of soft diplomacy. Yes of course they are going at the request of the government (did you think they woke up one morning and decided to pop over the Atlantic for the lolz?), and the trip will have been planned way in advance. But particularly in the present circs it’s a good way of maintaining a form of relationship but at a distance from the official UK government. Helps keep the seat warm in terms of the relationship between the two countries.
