AIBU to not tile behind my downstairs loo when I have a family of males

I’m planning on doing up our downstairs toilet. I’d love to put some sort of panelling behind the toilet and along the walls, like in this photo. I’d paint it a bathroom type paint that I can wipe down but AIBU to expect that the wall behind the loo will stay looking decent for long? I have 3 boys and a husband and they are all manky gits and seem to be unable to piss in the actual toilet even though they are teenagers now.

I thought of tiles but I really love this style of panelling and dark paint.

What’s behind on your toilet wall? I’d love to see any inspiration too if you love your loo

So long as it’s within a meter of the toilet that counts as in doesn’t it? 🤔

Cathmawr · 04/04/2026 21:31

Behind my toilet is just a painted plaster wall and I can safely say DH has never pissed on it 🤣

I think that paneling looks really good!

So long as it’s you that cleans it up.

Pureclass · 04/04/2026 21:35

I have 2 males at home and they never piss on the wall. I have a normal toilet though not a closed wall one. With just paint behind it. Does it make that make much of a difference?

Gloss paint is wipeable and durable and doesn't have to be shiny so just paint the panels with that and then there will be no bother.

My issue in the downstairs loo is wet flickering on the wall from people drying their hands. Im probably guilty too and guests. I've seen amazing *expensive tiles I want to put on what is obviously the longest wall in a small room. Or I like the look you are thinking of and will paint with gloss

FeralWoman · 04/04/2026 21:38

YABU. It’ll stink before too long and it’ll need replacing with something non-porous and easily cleaned. Tile it. Save the pretty panelling for your ensuite if you have one where it’s less likely to be peed on.

What’s wrong with the men and boys in your family? Defective penises or defective operators? Are they made to clean up their own piss? Do they not bother to hold it and point it in the toilet? Do they need to sit down instead of stand? They don’t deserve a pretty toilet. They don’t deserve the privilege of an inside toilet.

TON618 · 05/04/2026 19:57

Don't. They'll just piss all over it and that would be upsetting.

TheSpottedZebra · 05/04/2026 20:27

I'd make one loo really nice and ban the manky sods from using it. And keep it for me alone and maybe anyone else who met my hygiene standards.

And they could use - and clean - their own filthy midden.

Cricketashes · 05/04/2026 20:36

How are they making so much mess going for a wee? Men in my house are able to get it in the toilet bowl. I can't see how it can end up on the wall.

MachineBee · 05/04/2026 20:38

Teach your menfolk to sit down when using the loo, and to clean it regularly themselves.

pikkumyy77 · 05/04/2026 20:39

Uh…this is bad. As they are not just disgusting at home but when using other people’s facilities. Maybe try a shock collar.

BCBird · 05/04/2026 20:39

Bet their aim will improve if they are all on a rota to clean up!

CombatBarbie · 05/04/2026 20:39

Im thinking subway tiles vertical would give the illusion of panelling with the right grout. Then colour match the tiles for wall panelling

Screamingabdabz · 05/04/2026 20:39

I’d work on the male entitlement and disrespect in your household first.

I hope they don’t expect you to clean it up? Why do you put up with it?

Zanatdy · 05/04/2026 20:43

Well it will definitely end up stinking if they are going to end up aiming at the panelling. I am planning to do my downstairs wc in a similar style, but thankfully no males aiming at the wood panels.

I'm so glad you posted this.

I have a DH and DS who's almost 20. Both can piss IN or ON the toilet. Never on the wall. WTF!

LauraJaneGrace · 05/04/2026 20:54

If my family were pissing on the wall I'd be decorating the shed ....with a bucket for them to use.

Nearly50omg · 05/04/2026 21:17

Why are you cleaning piss off the walls that you haven’t sprayed on yourself is the main question?!! The quickest way boys learn to not piss everywhere is is to make them go and clean the toilet floor and walls EVERY single time they piss everywhere!! Zero need for it!

mathanxiety · 05/04/2026 23:43

YABVVVU to put up with your husband's and sons' inability to get their piss in the pan.

Make then clean the loo and environs in a rota every single evening. Each one of them gets a week of mopping up the misses of all the rest. You will soon find their aim imoroves.

This isn't funny. They're doing it because someone else is cleaning it up after then and they enjoy that fact. It's grossly disrespectful to you and to everyone else who has the misfortune to use the loos they use. Your husband should be thoroughly ashamed of himself for setting such a bad example and for letting his sons treat you so badly.

This is a hill to die on. Don't put up with it one day longer.

This.

I've grown up with men in the house and lived with men and I've never seen them pee all over like this.

Your men are disrespectful and gross and don't care because they're not the ones cleaning up their body fluids.

Make them clean that up every time, then consider redecorating after they've mastered how to use the bathroom. Panelling will absorb the urine and smell bad.

TheStepboardisfullofbitteroddos · 06/04/2026 00:04

YABU for raising disgusting boys. Why have you taught them to wee on your walls? Surely as teenagers they should be potty trained?

Honestly haven't had this problem- the odd drip from a night wee but never wee over the back of the toilet.

You should be able to panel behind your loo without issue.

InterestedDad37 · 06/04/2026 00:14

Manky gits
a) there's no excuse
b) if they're bad shots, they clean it up.

user593 · 06/04/2026 03:03

Three boys in our house (admittedly one still in nappies) but even my five year old doesn’t piss on the walls.

I’d go for the paneling because I’d refuse to live as you describe with people pissing up the walls.

DonewhatIcando · 06/04/2026 07:53

@Ilikeyoursleevesdo they usually piss up the wall or do they "shake" after?
I have statement wallpaper behind my loo down to the skirtingboards, in the kinda style of your photo but gold, it doesn't have any stains on it.
My dp doesn't "shake" though, he pats with loo roll (can't believe I've just written that😂)
If you're planning on the panelling too, the paint will seal it and be wipeable surely?

MaroonedinWales · 06/04/2026 08:45

A friend in London with three boys had a bathroom with a urinal built in. Hose and squeegee was all that was ever needed. Most children's friends were boys and they were awestruck at how cool it was. Girlfriends used the proper toilets.

Specialagentblond · 06/04/2026 08:49

Use wipeable paint.
