AIBU to think supermarkets should close earlier on bank holidays?

Glad I’m not working in food retail anymore.
Have/had friends and family who work/worked for supermarkets across England and Wales - to have the same problem.

Every bank holiday without fail, the supermarkets stayed open til 9pm or 10pm and it always goes quiet from 3-4pm The same goes from opening the store to 11am. It’s boring.

Then come the day after bank holidays, it’s busy as “I didn’t know you were open yesterday”. Look at the opening hours!

Why can’t supermarkets look at their sales figures for each hour and close the stores at 5pm?

Even now I was in a supermarket this morning and overheard two shop assistants moaning about there is no need to stay open on Monday.

It was 10-4 when I wordek in retail, just checked locally and it's 11-5 today so same, six hours just later. It works differently for supermarkets and convenience stores.

Swiftie1878 · 03/04/2026 12:45

Ours are shorter hours.

ShetlandishMum · 03/04/2026 12:45

It's a job. Just as many jobs are placed 24/7.

Vnml · 03/04/2026 12:47

I bet those who vote YABU never worked in retail

agree. Sunday opening hours are fine for a bank holiday imo.

I've worked in retail and voted YABU.

HazelMember · 03/04/2026 12:51

Do you think the same for those working in pubs, restaurants and cafes?

How come? A lot of people outside retail work 24/7.

I voted YABU.

I started working in retail when I was 12 years old.

And still YABU.

Agree, OP. I also think it is a bit sad that shops open at all on Good Friday. They never used to. I'm not religious, but from a nominally Christian heritage. It is the most solemn and pivotal day in the whole Christian calendar. You don't need to actually believe in god to feel it might be worth a break from capitalism on this one day. Seems a bit sad that we are so dedicated to treating all religious dates in terms of how to optimise buying and selling stuff.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 03/04/2026 13:04

I think they should be closed full stop on national bank holidays. Give the staff a day off. I think it's wrong they are also open Boxing Day. People can shop enough for 2 days closure. Retail staff are not appreciated, or paid enough for this. (I'm not in retail).

EBearhug · 03/04/2026 13:12

I was surprised I was able to donate at the Reading plasma centre today.

I thought supermarkets were mostly on Sunday hours today, though I've not checked locally.

BollyMolly · 03/04/2026 13:15

YABU. Strangely enough, the world doesn’t revolve around what is nice for retail workers. Having to work when the job needs us is a normal part of life. I never understand this thread when it comes up every year as if retail workers need to be a protected species.

What about hospitality? Or do they not count? Live he fact that most people who say retail staff should be off end up in a pub or restaurant…

Seems to be normal Friday hours around here.

I popped into a Tesco Extra earlier, as we'd been out for a breakfast treat, and I wanted to see if that Tesco had a specific item that my usual Tesco had had out of stock for a while. As we just happened to be passing.
I go to this Tesco maybe once every 2-3 years, so don't know it's "usual busyness", but it seemed very busy to me. It's located in a small shopping centre, and that was very busy as well. This was about 10:30am.

If you don't like the bank holiday opening hours OP, no one is making you go out at all. Absolutely nothing to stop you staying in and quietly passing the day in your own four wall. Not really anyone's business what the shops, or other people, decide to do.

mindutopia · 03/04/2026 13:20

Many of them do around here. Though Good Friday, despite being a bank holiday is also the start of a 2 week holiday for a lot of people so I expect today they are open normal hours to accommodate everyone who is travelling today or shopping for their roast dinner components. That said, our local shops close at 4pm today, same on Monday.

Lots of people working normal hours today though. Dh is self-employed and would be working if he didn’t need to take his car for an MOT at 4. The mechanics obviously working normal hours at doing an MOT at 4. Hospital and GP surgery open as usual. We’d probably all like a day off, but the world has to keep turning.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 03/04/2026 13:20

Oh lord if the OP is the poster that I think it is they posted constantly complaining about customers when they worked in retail
Apparently no longer work in retail
but still start threads moaning about retail.
I have no idea why If you don't work in a supermarket why the hours they are open is of any concern to you

Is it capitalism because I did a supermarket shop today for essential food items?

Yeah I did actually. Shops are there to serve the public not for the convenience of staff. Ours are open normal hours, including until 10pm tonight. Shop staff in England already get perks of an early Sunday finish that other workers don’t get, I don’t understand why when hospitality etc is open late retail always expect to be a special case.

Morepositivemum · 03/04/2026 14:39

I love you op and will vote for you to run our branch! In until 9 tonight and half seven tomorrow night then back in Monday! I say this regularly but need to get a new job!!!

MrAlyakhin · 03/04/2026 14:48

Why is it just retail hours that people have a bee in their bonnet about? People work long hours in all sorts of jobs. It's a bank holiday today, I bet loads of people will treat themselves to a takeaway, but you don't see anyone worrying about the long hours of those working in kebab shops. Just seems they want to police retail hours. It's weird.

Oh Christ I think you’re right, I’ve definitely read similar threads about this and I now suspect it’s the same poster banging their very tired drum 😂
anyway, I’m just off to Sainsburys!

igelkott2026 · 03/04/2026 14:52

Why do people care so much about retail workers compared with other industries.

Across the weekend, people will be working in hospitals, on AA patrols, in cafes/hotels/restaurants, NT places, leisure centres, etc.

Why is it ok for all of them to work but not shop workers?

OP I hope you stay at home all weekend and don't use any services from anywhere (and that includes listening to the radio/watching TV as people have to work to broadcast those to you too).
