AIBU to think school street restrictions and PCNs will cause more chaos?

a council near me are introducing school streets to stop congestion outside schools which is a great idea. They are introducing permit parking great

what this means in reality is hundreds of houses aren’t allowed any deliveries, no taxis and no none essential building workers in the area every school workday between 8am and 9.30 and 2.30 and 3.45

A permanent career can get a pass but not random district nurses etc. imagine telling delivery firms they can’t deliver at these times or they will get a PCN. Anyone saying they should use lockers, my last delivery was a dishwasher

AIBU in thinking this is a stupid idea and school traffic will just park a bit further away and this will cause chaos?

When are you expecting your next dishwasher?

TheCurious0range · 02/04/2026 22:37

Surely residents should have exemption so can give a delivery driver a visitor permit while they deliver the dishwasher

Not sure but I reckon my washing machine is going to go bang soon

Yanbu, restricting trades people, deliveries, taxis during those times is bonkers

No that’s the thing no exceptions for deliveries , taxis or anything. Just resident permits

PCN cameras as well so all fines will be sent out automatically

Surely they’ll make it “loading only” or similar to allow things like Amazon deliveries to continue.

And plenty of roads are permit holders only and if anyone requires building work they’ll have to get a guest permit for the van which they’ll likely already have for when they have guests

Whatabouttheparcels · 02/04/2026 22:42
  • Visitors/guests: No. Guests must park outside the zone or arrive outside of operating hours.
  • Deliveries: Deliveries must be scheduled outside of the restricted hours.
  • Taxis: General taxis and private hire vehicles are not exempt and must not enter the zone during operating hours.
  • SEN Transport: Council-contracted Home-to-School transport vehicles are exempt and permitted to enter.

Contractors should schedule access outside of the restricted hours where possible.

  • Essential works: If emergency or essential works require access during operating hours (eg, utility works), the contractor must apply for a parking dispensation in advance. This is a chargeable service.

So schedule the delivery between 9.30 and 2.30

bidon · 02/04/2026 22:45

How dare anyone try and make roads safer for children getting to and from school.

😂😂 yes because it’s that easy, even if you pay top whack for named day delivery they usually just ring you when you are the next delivery. Imagine saying sorry mate wait 90 mins before you come knocking at my door

who does your deliveries? I can go and do a leaflet drop on the houses

These ones aren’t permits - it’s all camera controlled as you enter the road. I think you ca them register as living in the road.

Totally agree it should be made safer and I completely understand when people get annoyed when people block their drives at school time. Absolutely more should be done to stop this

give the lazy school drivers PCNs I’m all for that not the delivery drivers taxis etc

i don’t believe this is the right solution though

I think it is an utter disgrace that you are being inconvenienced so that children can have safe streets around their school.

i think the best plan is that you move house immediately. I hear Dubai has excellent parking, and Amazon can deliver 24/7.

That’s wild. I wouldn’t like being told when I can and can’t have deliveries to my own house just because I live a few streets away from a school.

Loubelou71 · 02/04/2026 22:54

This has just happened by us and I can't see how it's going to work either. The camera went up and it wasn't publicised so I expect it's going to be chaos.

Whenisitmyturntorest · 02/04/2026 22:54

I wonder if this has happened because of resident complaints but I can see how this can be really restrictive and unfair for elderly or disabled people that rely on taxis or transport from relatives.

NoSoupForU · 02/04/2026 22:54

I know Parkgate Drive. It would take probably about 50 seconds to walk from one end of it to the other. If youre at the far end of Heathfield or Collingwood then maybe a minute and a half walk from your front door to the end of the exclusion zone. For most people they'd manage to walk that and get in a taxi. You arrange for trades to have arrived before the exclusion. Deliveries you have to take your chances. Local couriers will know the exclusion zones and plan around them.

LittleArithmetics · 02/04/2026 22:57

So if someone did not drive and was not very mobile, they would not be able to use a taxi for say a hospital appointment, during these hours. Have I got this right?

Agree and I bet many delivery drivers are going to be caught and have to pay the PCN fines themselves

Can't believe so many people think you're being unreasonable. Sounds shit to me!

Maxme · 02/04/2026 22:58

I expect the result will be the local delivery drivers like evri / postman / supermarkets will quickly learn this themselves and avoid these times. Infrequent national deliveries such as appliances will just randomly get hit by the fine.

As a resident, I would leave that to a conversation between council and delivery driver.

If you employ contractors just let them know up front and they will also just avoid these times.

That’s my point though, if people can walk, like school kids, they are going to all be dropped off 50 seconds away in front of the other school that’s being expanded and just move the issue further along
