AIBU to wonder why people park next to lone cars?

So I've just got back from shopping, and once again, some absolute dickhead has parked right next to me, when there are about 168 free spaces, and only about 20 cars actually parked.
Surely it makes sense, when there's a block of empty spaces, to park in alternating bays, for the convenience of everyone?

I notice this ALL THE TIME, and I so want to come back to my car whilst somebody is actually mid park, and ask them Why? Why?
For the love of god, why?!?!!!!!!!!

I just can't get my head around why people choose to park next to an already parked car, when there's acres of spaces free 🤯

And the most annoying part is, I always park right at the far end of any car park, in the hope that its less likely to happen, and it still happens!

Can anyone give me an insight into why people do it? As I've now just come to the conclusion that they're all either selfish bastards, or thick as shit.

Too much choice in an empty car park. Easier to follow someone else's lead and park with them.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 02/04/2026 20:45

I find it strange too.

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 02/04/2026 20:47

Why does it matter? What's the problem with someone parking next to you? I get it's annoying if they've parked too close, but you don't say that in your OP, you're implying that simply parking next to someone is selfish and I don't see it.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 02/04/2026 20:48

Why is it selfish?

Strange perhaps, but selfish?

MadisonAvenue · 02/04/2026 20:49

I was walking back to my car the other day and could see from a distance that someone had parked right next to me despite there being loads of empty spaces.
I was walking along having a right moan to myself and when I got closer I realised it was my son’s car, he’d parked there to wind me up.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 02/04/2026 20:49

It's easier to see another car than lines on the floor, so easier to park.

Anjo2011 · 02/04/2026 20:49

I think some people find it easier to judge where the lines of the space are when there’s already a car parked. I cannot think of any other reason. I’m with you though, I don’t understand it.

PashaMinaMio · 02/04/2026 20:50

It’s just the same when you are the only soul looking in a shop window. Suddenly others, out of nowhere join you. Curiosity I guess; what’s she looking at?

It’s called “the herding instinct” safety in a crowd.

I just find it absolutely baffling. Parking spaces are so tight - and I don't have a big hulking suv, just a standard family Mondeo size car - I just can't understand why anyone would make it more of a faff (for themselves aswell) having to wriggle out of our cars, when you can just leave one space in between, and we can all get in and out easily.

This. The bays at my local supermarket are quite hard to see, they're brick with a lighter coloured brick to show the lines rather than paint, but it makes it difficult to see the colour difference when it's wet. It's much easier to judge when lining up against another car. I have a small car though so there's always still plenty of space between the cars.

CarlaLemarchant · 02/04/2026 20:57

It’s easier to park next to another car than it is into an empty space. I wouldn’t park right next to another car in an otherwise empty car park as it would feel a bit intrusive but it’s definitely easier.

YellingAway · 02/04/2026 20:57

So that my car doesn’t get lonely when I’m not there.

InMyOpenOnion · 02/04/2026 20:59

I hear you OP, this really irritates me, it's so unnecessary. And they invariably park to my right, so it's me who has to squeeze into the driver's seat, not them. I put it down to mindless herding instinct with a touch of selfishness making me squeeze in as opposed to themselves!

Anxioustealady · 02/04/2026 20:59

So annoying! Especially when you have a baby in a car seat and all the parent and child spaces are full

Lots of people justifying it because they can't park, another reason to want them not to park next to me! Lol

In an empty car park though??? Sounds like people who do this need to hand in their license, blimey

PollyBell · 02/04/2026 21:03

I presume they do it for safety i cant say I ever thought about it the spots are there to be used

WhatAMarvelousTune · 02/04/2026 20:48

Because obviously the person has parked in an empty space for a reason.

I currently have an injury that makes it harder for me to get in and out of the car and I need to have the door open wide. Therefore I park at the far end of the car park to be able to do that. Yet still I come back to find some idiot has parked within inches of my door.

Selfish because its knowingly inconveniencing someone else, who then usually has to do a sideways limbo just to get in their car.

I like parking away from peoole when im with my wheelchair using, non blue badge entitled Mother.

It makes life really difficult when this happens.

Amethystanddiamonds · 02/04/2026 21:18

DH deliberately parks in between 2 cars because people have hit his parked car and driven off twice now, when he's left a gap in an emptyish car park. He figures if there is already a car either side it's less likely to happen.

Pasta4Dinner · 02/04/2026 21:31

When I first passed my test I used to park at the back of the supermarket carpark which was empty. My boot was so small I used to put shopping on the back seat. A woman honked me to move when I was doing this so she could park right next to me.

Okbyethen · 02/04/2026 21:38

Omg I HATE people who do this - Im with you OP! I purposely go food shopping early (like 9:30am) on Monday which is my day off, so it's nice and quiet and a lot more tolerable. I park pretty much the furthest away I can be, at the end of a row and 9 times out of 10 some stupid fucker parks next to me!! It's so annoying!

GrillaMilla · 02/04/2026 21:55

This is my no.1 pet peeve.
Especially when you're just about to get out of your car and you have to mime to their passenger through the windows about who's gonna get out first.

Alaoh · 02/04/2026 22:03

Had this recently in a huge Morrisons carpark, completely empty at the far end, so I pulled up there and someone pulled up directly beside me, there were so so so many empty spaces, the back half was completely empty, why are you parking next to me!
