AIBU to wonder why people park next to lone cars?

So I've just got back from shopping, and once again, some absolute dickhead has parked right next to me, when there are about 168 free spaces, and only about 20 cars actually parked.
Surely it makes sense, when there's a block of empty spaces, to park in alternating bays, for the convenience of everyone?

I notice this ALL THE TIME, and I so want to come back to my car whilst somebody is actually mid park, and ask them Why? Why?
For the love of god, why?!?!!!!!!!!

I just can't get my head around why people choose to park next to an already parked car, when there's acres of spaces free 🤯

And the most annoying part is, I always park right at the far end of any car park, in the hope that its less likely to happen, and it still happens!

Can anyone give me an insight into why people do it? As I've now just come to the conclusion that they're all either selfish bastards, or thick as shit.

Yoi find it odd that people are bothered by not bring able to.open the doors properly for young children, elderly relatives, disabled passengers etc?

I would expect those people to park in the bigger bays or on the end of a row to be honest, just like I usually do. The level of vitriol over such a non issue is bizarre.

Pinkgin00 · 03/04/2026 22:27

I find it easier to reverse into a bay next to a car, so I tend to park next to a car in a semi full car park. If it was completely empty, I wouldn't do it though.

Vitriol? 🤨

I'm sure some people think they're supposed to file in row by row and close the gap like at school assembly.

Why does it matter? What's the problem with someone parking next to you? I get it's annoying if they've parked too close, but you don't say that in your OP, you're implying that simply parking next to someone is selfish and I don't see it.

A wonderful rational response

beeble347 · 03/04/2026 23:46

YANBU except for when I did this recently having turned up very early for a soft play session, in a car park with no lines that always gets rammed. I didn't want to accidentally take up space inefficiently knowing other parents end up having to park elsewhere where you shouldn't really park at all.

EddieVedderSingsToMe · 04/04/2026 00:00

I do this all the time. My reason is I drive a van (a vw transporter for size ref) and have to reverse into a space to make life easier for myself pulling out again. It’s far easier to reverse into a bay when I’m lining up against another car and can see it from my mirrors and hear my reversing sensors beeping. Much trickier when a car park is empty and I have nothing to line up against. I can only think this is the reason others do it. Unless they are out to get you. Must admit it never crossed my mind that anyone would be annoyed by it.

BunfightBetty · 04/04/2026 00:34

Because some people are weird, with no self-awareness, OP.

They must be the same people who plonk themselves down within three feet of you on an otherwise sparsely populated beach, choose the seat right next to you on the Tube when half the seats have no-one around them, and commandeer the seats right in front of yours in a quarter-full cinema.

No sense of personal space or etiquette.

As for being incapable of parking between lines, a retest should be mandatory, that’s shocking. How dangerous must they be when driving?! And I say that as someone who isn’t the best driver, but certainly can line up between lines when moving super slowly.

I was walking back to my car the other day and could see from a distance that someone had parked right next to me despite there being loads of empty spaces.
I was walking along having a right moan to myself and when I got closer I realised it was my son’s car, he’d parked there to wind me up.

Grin Your son is a legend and a menace in equal measure !

Owning a car must be agony for you. I feel sorry for you 🤣

I find it easier to park beside a car than going into an empty space beside empty spaces. Hope that helps.

Maybe do some parking practice in an empty car park?

I like the paint on my car, I'm fed up with getting my doors bashed.

Also I have GTPS (very painful hip condition) so I park at a distance to any other cars, so I can open my car door fully & swing both legs out together, which helps not trigger the pain. Then some twat parks right next to my car door . Go away you mongoose!

I do try to park in an end space, but these often have a curb & that is very painful to try to get out the car & up on the curb.

For a separate issue I have a blue badge, but I rarely use it so the disabled spaces are free for people who need to get wheelchairs out or physically assist others to get out of the car.

a little thought into the fact someone has chisen to irk at a distance & some consideration would go a long way.

Bbq1 · 04/04/2026 01:10

Same as cinema. Loads of space and people come and sit in row behind /directly in front of you.

HighSkye · 04/04/2026 04:29

Posting for the first time on MN just because of this thread.

This annoys me too OP!

Even worse is being in a cinema that’s pretty much empty and someone coming to sit right next to me or one seat over. Why so close? There are sooooo many empty rows and plentyyyyy more seats around. Fucking hell.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 04/04/2026 05:11

This is why if I’m in a cafe or on public transport and it’s half empty, I put my bag/coat on the seat next to me. I’m not having some randomer sitting next to me when there are plenty of other free spaces.
Personal space people.

I don’t need to do parking practice. I can park where I like. I’ve never scraped or otherwise hit any other car, it’s just easier to avoid the possibility altogether and as I said, anyone can park in whatever empty space they like (of those which are available to their status, so disregarding disabled spaces in my case).

Maybe find something more meaningful to direct your attention at? And use your disabled badge, that’s what it’s for.

Orangepate · 04/04/2026 07:08

I always hope that if it just the two of them, the cars will mate and there will be lots of baby cars.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 04/04/2026 07:08

I don't know, but I wish the fecker who clipped my rear offside bumper in a car park on Thursday hadn't. I know it was a white vehicle, that's all.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 02/04/2026 20:45

I find it strange too.

So do I

hattie43 · 04/04/2026 07:13

It’s easier to line up .

Kiwi09 · 04/04/2026 07:21

All the people who do this because they struggle to park between the lines need to learn how to park properly rather than inflict this awful behaviour on other people!

It’s amazing how often these people park so close that it’s difficult to get into your car as well.

PlaygroundSusie · 04/04/2026 07:46

YANBU, OP, I completely agree with you - it's odd and annoying.

I once went down to my local shops, which has around 30 parking spaces. On this particular day, the car park was completely empty. I parked in a random spot. As I was locking my car, a second car pulled up, two spots down from me (which was fine!).

But then a third car pulled up, and guess where the driver chose to park? Yep, right between the only two occupied spots, despite there being at least 27 free spots. And she parked right on the line, so that I couldn't open my door fully, and had to turn sideways to squeeze out and in. Like - why???

I classify these people as the same sorts of people who - when entering a public restroom, where there are 9 stalls, and only one occupied stall - choose a stall next to the occupied one, to do their 'business'.

Iwishitwerewarmer · 04/04/2026 07:51

Yes!! I always wonder why?! It makes no sense to me!! Another-almost empty restaurant and the waitress sits me and whoever I’m with right next to the only other occupied table in the restaurant. Happens on a bus too and guaranteed someone will sit right behind me or next to me on an empty bus. Aaagh!

MaryBeardsShoes · 04/04/2026 07:59

Why are people going on like it’s the crime of the century? Due to my work pattern I often park in an empty car park and come back to a full one. Should no one park because other people seem to be unable to get in their cars? How many car park spaces do you feel entitled to?

Mayflowerz · 04/04/2026 08:00

I always park away from other cars if I can and have lost count the amount of times I have come back and someone is next to me and usually so close I struggle to open the door and I look around to a nearly empty car park thinking why?!
On A few occasions I have been in the car answering a text and a car has come up and parked next to me. After they have gone back and forth multiple times making sure they are level with me I have pulled out and moved spaces, much to their dismay.
If people can’t park without lining themselves up with another car they should not be driving at all. All drivers should be aware of the vehicle size and be able to park without needing the help of others.
