AIBU to wonder why people park next to lone cars?

So I've just got back from shopping, and once again, some absolute dickhead has parked right next to me, when there are about 168 free spaces, and only about 20 cars actually parked.
Surely it makes sense, when there's a block of empty spaces, to park in alternating bays, for the convenience of everyone?

I notice this ALL THE TIME, and I so want to come back to my car whilst somebody is actually mid park, and ask them Why? Why?
For the love of god, why?!?!!!!!!!!

I just can't get my head around why people choose to park next to an already parked car, when there's acres of spaces free 🤯

And the most annoying part is, I always park right at the far end of any car park, in the hope that its less likely to happen, and it still happens!

Can anyone give me an insight into why people do it? As I've now just come to the conclusion that they're all either selfish bastards, or thick as shit.

I do this all the time. My reason is I drive a van (a vw transporter for size ref) and have to reverse into a space to make life easier for myself pulling out again. It’s far easier to reverse into a bay when I’m lining up against another car and can see it from my mirrors and hear my reversing sensors beeping. Much trickier when a car park is empty and I have nothing to line up against. I can only think this is the reason others do it. Unless they are out to get you. Must admit it never crossed my mind that anyone would be annoyed by it.

It’s never occurred to you that someone would be irritated that you’ve come and parked your F off van right next to them in a car park with loads of available spaces?

It looks like the general consensus is that lots of people are crap at parking and are either oblivious to their impact on others or don’t care.

InMyOpenOnion · 04/04/2026 09:23

I am really pleased that parking within the lines in a car park is now included in the driving test. Judging by this thread, it sounds like it's needed!

Your ‘need’ to not be inconvenienced is nowhere near the need for someone with mobility issues to have a bit of space. But you know that. The issue is that you only care about you.

Someone with mobility issues has a blue badge and can park in the spaces designed for their ease of access

TippyTee · 04/04/2026 09:37

Happens to me a lot.

I also seem to attract people to look at the exact same shelf or rack of clothes when I’m shopping. I go at times when it’s less busy.

I am fairly quick decision maker with whether I like the clothes item or not so spend just a few quick moments to look. Inevitably, someone (desperately) comes up beside me out of the blue in what seems to be a deserted shop, to see what I’m looking at and rifles through the rack that I’m standing in front of.

GrillaMilla · 04/04/2026 09:39

I'm assuming they rely on parking sensors rather than mirrors. So they need an object (another parked car) as a bleeping guide.

It's a strange mindset as revealed by some posters here, but nowt so queer as folk as they say!

GrillaMilla · 04/04/2026 09:41

Sometimes, when it happens to me, I imagine for a moment I might be unknowingly taking part in some kind of prank type Jeremy Beadle show, it's so ridiculous

Theres syrict criteroa for blue badges. My mother doesnt qualify as her condition (which has being going on for several years) is "temporary". Somedays she cant walk more than a few metres.

Generally what happens is whoever is driving has to drive out of the space , spend several minutes blocking cars while helping her into the car, folding the wheelchair etc, then carry on.

Which is why wherever posdible we oark way from other cars... to minimise this happening.⁹

Screamingabdabz · 04/04/2026 09:44

It’s herd mentality. Thick people with sheep-like minds. YANBU.

Rileysp · 04/04/2026 09:49

Honestly. To wind people up

brunettemic · 04/04/2026 09:51

I’ve always assumed it’s because people believe an isolated car is more likely to get broken into in a car park so they park next to another one to avoid that.

Munchyseeds2 · 04/04/2026 09:52

No idea but it happens when camping too
Empty field and someone comes and pitches right next to you!

PoachedSmoke · 04/04/2026 09:53

I just assume they are idiots, OP. There's a lot of selfish mindless people about!

If you are one of the people who do this, please reconsider and try and think about why someone might have specifically parked this way. I do it to avoid people denting my car doors. If you are incapable of lining up against the lines on the ground, you should not be driving at all.

DarkForces · 04/04/2026 09:55

Because cars get lonely too. My car gets bored easily.

If your car is too precious to you to risk taking it out in public then maybe get a taxi? It is ridiculous to think you not only get your space but the ones each side too. It's a public car park. I'll park where I fancy.

Do you live in London or a big city?

No, I live in a small town in the North West. Why?

This is what we're up against

Actually I don't do it. It's ridiculous to think I own 3 spaces for the price of 1 though so may just start in the hope of annoying people who think they own the place.

Because anecdotally, I have found people who don’t live in London are very precious about their cars and parking. Most Londoners are just grateful to park their car somewhere safely!

Because cars get lonely too. My car gets bored easily.

I deliberately park my car near another Nissan so they can chat Grin .

Bonus points if it's the same model but any Nissan will do .

One annoying thing I found was when I parked (perfectly , obvs) my car is a mid sized . Someone in a behemoth great lump of an SUV or people carrier parks up and takes some of my parking bay .
If you drive something that doesn't fit in a bay easily then that's not my problem. You cannot think "Oh I'll just have a couple of feet of their space too " Hmm

☺️ feel free to park by my Ford fiesta. She's had a long hard life and enjoys swapping stories about potholes, speed bumps and making the reverse gear stick.

namechangetheworld · 03/04/2026 22:22

I would expect those people to park in the bigger bays or on the end of a row to be honest, just like I usually do. The level of vitriol over such a non issue is bizarre.

Edited

What "bigger bays"? The odd lift for a disabled passenger doesn't warrant a blue badge and everyone gets up in arms about the P&C spaces. There are sadly no "I'm shit at parking" spaces.

PoachedSmoke · 04/04/2026 10:28

@DarkForces My car has been dented and scratched by these mindless idiots many times. Of course, they have driven off without leaving details, leaving me out of pocket to the tune of hundreds. It's nothing to do with my car being particularly precious, but more to do with me not wanting to shell out for the mistakes of others.

I appear to have hit a nerve, so clearly this thread is aimed at you! 🤣

Okey cokey. See you in the car park.

Well the mystery as to why drivers do this has been solved..

It's drivers who can't park between white lines unfortunately. They 'need' another car to line up against as they struggle.

I do plenty of reverse parking, I use my mirrors to guide my car in!

The more you practice, the better you get at it.

I don’t struggle I just don’t want to be that person parking at odd angles making it harder for the next person or the person after that . The number of people leaving their back end over next doors white lines is amazing .

Yeah I can imagine that in cities like London, parking spaces must be like hens teeth.
