Been at my current workplace for 8 years now however I’ve not been that happy there lately so I’ve been applying to other jobs. Most of work colleagues know I’m not happy at present job. I have a job interview on Wednesday of next week. Should I phone in sick that day or go in Tuesday saying I’m not well & phone in sick on the Wednesday?

I work in a school and we would request a day off for interview - (they have to grant leave for interviews) - any reason you can’t do that? If so, sick on Tues & Weds

RS1987 · 08/04/2026 11:15

Sorry just realised I’m late to the chat!

Schools work very differently to other employers, who don’t give you time off to find another job and don’t want to know you’re doing it

Rather than faking an illness, could you say it's an appointment you can't miss? I've never had a doctors visit that I could've booked 3 weeks in advance.

That way, you know it's only the half day and there's no need to fake anything.

itsonlyafuckingbiscuit · 08/04/2026 11:50

You did the right thing going off sick today. They didn't leave you many options. Just go into work tomorrow and if anyone asks about the interview, say they agreed to an evening interview and you were actually really poorly yesterday.

Are you not entitled to time off for interviews? Everywhere I’ve worked has allowed this as otherwise how would you get new jobs?

Christ you'd get the sack in the private sector if they find out you're looking to leave... Dentist appointment every time

Princejoffyjaffur · 08/04/2026 11:59

Take a sickie. Standard procedure.

BitterTits · 08/04/2026 12:01

Don't phone in sick because if you get the job, the request for a reference will give you away and you may end up with neither. You're just going to have to be honest and say you won't be on that day and tell them why (presumably next week, not today!)

Edited

of course it won’t give you away. They don’t know when you had the interview

Catcatcatcatcat · 08/04/2026 12:26

Call in sick but DO NOT TELL ANYONE!

Runnermumof2 · 08/04/2026 13:10

Check your work policy. At mine they have to allow you time away to attend job interviews regardless of whether they are internal or external. Although it does mean disclosing to your line manager that you have an interview lined up

Sackable offence. Won't the interviewing employer want references?

Hardly. 🙄

Not everyone has experience in being deceitful, like you obviously have!

No experience in that I’m afraid. However, I have experience in getting what needs to be done, done!

Sam155320 · 10/04/2026 01:11

Just to update - Interview Manager said to me that she will be shortlisting this week and hiring Manager will get back to me next week. Is this a positive sign? I did apply on a Job website.

I think it’s a positive sign, @Sam155320.

With some hiring manager’s, you’re lucky if they even acknowledge your existence!

All the very best of luck! 🤞

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 24/04/2026 23:20

Any news, @Sam155320?

Sam155320 · 24/04/2026 23:58

Yes I’ve now been successful in securing another job

Bristolandlazy · 25/04/2026 00:41

Well done, that's brilliant.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 25/04/2026 00:54

Well done girl

Dont tell the current place that you interviewed when sick, just say it was a zoom interview out of hours

Even take some more days off sick during your notice period xx

topcat2014 · 25/04/2026 06:32

Phone in sick. Your bosses will have done the same in every case. Otherwise we would all get a job at 18 and never change

topcat2014 · 25/04/2026 06:33

@Sam155320that'sgreat news
