AIBU to say the moon doesn’t have a dark side

As the title says the moon doesn’t have a dark side - that is a Pink Floyd album. The moon rotates similar to the Earth, but has a day length about 28 Earth days. So all sides will get sunlight,

One side does always faces us (gravitationally tidally locked) and we only see one side, so there is a far side, which very, very few humans have actually seen in person.

It came up a few times on the Artemis thread and I just wanted to get that off my chest.

I think they mean 'dark side' metaphorically, as in unknown.

Yeah, it's only the dark side in relation to seeing it from Earth. Obviously it gets light, from the sun.

Dark side of the moon means the side we can’t see.

53 years on and Dark side of the moon is STILL a brilliant album.

The name dark side wasn’t in use before the album, it was always just called the far side. So I don’t buy it means dark as in unknown or not usually seen.

The name just stuck and most people don’t think anything more about it. There are definitely some people who think one side of the moon is dark (ie it gets no sunlight).

There is no dark side in the moon, really. Matter of fact, it's all dark. The only thing that makes it look light is the sun.

What do you mean you don’t buy it? There’s people telling you that was their understanding of the term. Maybe it’s not the specific space-accurate meaning pink Floyd had in mind, but it’s still what people understood by the phrase.

And besides, it clearly did mean unknown, because in the Mulan song Make a Man Out of You, the line is “mysterious as the dark side of the moon”.

When the side is pointing at the sun it is in light. It doesn’t shine and we only see it by its reflection but it is in daylight for about 14 days at a time,

I didn’t know that the dark side was in use before the album so thank you for that. I still stand by the fact some people do really think one side is permanently dark.

I do find the term "new moon a bit weird. A new one feels like it should be a Crescent one. So I tend to call the new moon the "no moon".
