To think this is spooky? Product adverts

This evening I had my iPhone in the bathroom- I used the camera to zoom in on instructions to dye my eyelashes.
since then, on here, I’ve had adverts for four specific products that I have in my bathroom.
I didn’t speak to anyone or say anything when I was in there.
is this a thing? It’s a bit spooky!

Oh it's 100% a thing unfortunately!!

I once had a conversation with my mother rin law, about renting a storage container, hadn't spoken of it before to her or anyone, hasn't searched for it...

...low and behold what was all of my FB adverts after that conversation? BLOODY STORAGE CONTAINERS 😳😬

also if you have an Alexa at home they listen into all conversations

Twoshoesnewshoes · 01/04/2026 20:53

But I didn’t speak! So it must have been my camera?

Were any of these products in the range to be captured by your camera? If your forward camera was pointed at your eyelash dye, what was your back camera pointing at? I'd imagine that you've given camera permissions to all sorts of apps on your phone

My DGD sent me photos of a friend's puppy and we had a phone conversations about puppies and I am now being bombarded with pop ups and adverts for dog food. I don't have a dog 👀

@DarmokAndJaladAtTenagra i guess so, when I moved the camera to focus on the leaflet, but very briefly.

I know that Google audio records at random moments, you can listen to them in your account and delete them. But I haven't heard of it for untaken images, is your phone a modern AI smartphone? I wonder if it's using that technology in the same way!

Surely it’s more likely that the things you already own in your bathroom are things that you have previously purchased online? Therefore your advertising profile will likely include them (cookies, email trackers etc).

Twoshoesnewshoes · 02/04/2026 09:05

@Whenthemorningcomes one of the products I get online but the other one no.

It’s 1984 big brother really is watching you. 😉😁.

Adverts have appeared on my laptop for random things I have thought about, not googled or spoken about, no modern mobile phone to listen in.
