AIBU to think nursery staff should not cordon off a public playground?

I took my almost 3-year-old and baby to a small playground this morning, and while we were there a nursery group came along. So far so normal.

The staff with the group then added chains to the two gates to stop their kids from escaping, and roped off some of the climbing frame.

I was a bit annoyed by this - the roped off areas included the fireman’s pole and a rope ladder which my kid loves. Obviously this is a space designed for small children so it is inherently pretty safe… The locks on the gates also confused a number of other parents trying to get in, although they could be opened relatively easily by an adult.

I did speak to the member of staff and asked if they really needed to do it and she said it was the health and safety policy of the nursery. I didn’t want to kick up a fuss and we left after a bit.

AIBU in thinking this was a bit out of order - it’s a public playground.

I have seen plenty of suffering of children but that’s irrelevant here.

the nursery don’t own the playground so they can’t dictate who uses it.

Yeah she probably would be upset about it but I wouldn't be pissed off about it though she would just have to go another day. Id teach her that these things happen and find something else to do just as fun .Im sorry but i just don't see why anyone would make such a big deal out of this like i said it's not the end of the world there's children out there with nothing and nobody to care for them and I've seen that for myself first hand and trust me it's awful, so missing out on a day in the park im sorry compared to the problems some people have it's kind of minor isn't it

Oh, hello nursery owner. Taking over play equipment in a public place is not ok despite how you see it.

You can't support unreasonable behaviour on the basis that some people have it worse!

Thanks all, I feel vindicated! I totally get how it happens - they’ll have risk assessed a trip there and thought those bits were too high, and the gates are a risk, so they’ve taken action to mitigate that. But it seemed way over the top to me.

If they were locking the gates and roping off a fireman’s pole, etc etc, then this playground is obviously too inappropriate and dangerous for the children at their daycare.
You should go back a few times and see if you can’t run into them again and find out their particulars - then take whatever action you feel is appropriate.
I’m in California and this would get shut down in about 5 minutes, although I’ve never heard of it happening here before. Ever.

Right ok if you can read something like that about other children being so much worse off and im talking abuse of a high level here and still go on about a missed day at the playground like it's the end of the world then im wasting my time and you need to get a grip

whynotwhatknot · 03/04/2026 21:23

bloody hll what has other children being abused got to do with this

JMSA · 04/04/2026 01:36

Talk about entitlement!
They shouldn’t have done this.

The purpose of this op is not about abuse.

Zanatdy · 04/04/2026 07:34

They cannot do this so i’d he firing off some emails to the council & nearby nurseries. I’d have told them my child wanted to use certain equipment so ask them to remove the chains etc.

Right ok so this site is supposed to be about voicing an opinion one of which not everyone will like but ultimately everyone's right to do so, so unless you are running the site yourself then you don't get to tell me what I can and can't post id say that's up to who to admins or whoever runs it wouldn't you? 🙄

Its got to do with the fact that some people actually think that missing out on a day in the park is like the end of the world i just pointed out that there are lot worse things going on in this world than that and no need for the attitude if you don't like my comment then just move on!

It's an OP to find out what the OP can do about this. You should be concerned the ropes are actually a hazard for children and should be reported, the fact ropes are used proves the fact the nursery children aren't being properly cared for while playing. This is actually a serious matter and you have tried to railroad it with things that are no concern to this thread.

Look let's just agree to disagree on this one yes because its getting tiring having to keep explaining myself over and over. Btw rolling eyes emoji real mature!

You are missing the point that this is actually a serious situation involving children, the safety of the nursery children and other children. But yes let's agree to disagree and your point is not even a point in this discussion.

If my point is not even a point in this discussion then why do you keep replying if you really think my point is so insignificant then move on it's simple really 🤷

You say you care for children yet have shown no compassion or safety for the children in this thread. Shame on you.

Im all for the safety of children i have two adult sons with autism whose needs are such that they need 24 hour care so i know better than most that safety is a priority so id appreciate it if you did not judge me when you don't know the first thing about me shame on you more like!

Now if this is he case you should be aware of the danger to the kids in the post and maybe suggest ways to rectify the situation

Kelly1969 · 04/04/2026 19:18

Outrageous behaviour!
They can’t do that, if it’s not safe for them to be there without doing that, they need to go elsewhere, somewhere private and where they pay to have facilities to themselves.
I would have taken any chains off and proceeded to take my kids on the equipment!

Why would you almost question if this is the case that i have children with autism do you actually think i would make that kind of thing up to score a point?

mumofboysinlondon · 01/04/2026 17:59

I did ask whether they had exclusive use of the playground (you never know) but they said no.

You have your answer then, they have no right to restrict others from using the equipment, which we all knew anyway.
