Anyone else find self care totally tedious?

So much stuff needs doing just to keep ourselves going. Shower, wash hair, brush teeth, dry self, put on clean clothes. Every single day except maybe for hair washing. What a pain. I don't even wear make up or bother moisturising, but still find it so tedious. That's before we even do the feeding our bodies bit!

I'm allergic to so many products, including makeup, that it doesn't take me long to get ready. I've recently discovered velcro rollers, which I put in my hair each evening after I've washed it. It now looks styled when I get up 😊

I hate showering in the summer because it makes me hot and clammy, even after a tepid shower.

I have very long, thick hair. It takes ages to wash out the shampoo and conditioner and to dry it.

I somehow interpreted that as every day - presumably not.

Even in my 60s I am still blessed (if that's the word) with very thick hair, too. I have worn it short for most of my life..And 100% of the years since I had children.

I have no idea if I would have looked better with it long (I'm sure I wouldn't now 😅) but really, I have never cared enough to worry. I like my time more!

I guess most men don’t have hair that takes 40 mins to diffuse dry though like mine
it’s not optional, it’s already only shoulder length but my hair is curly and it takes a lot longer than if you can just blast it dry

Most (unbald) men could have hair that long though, if they wanted.

Why do you feel you have to present this appearance to the world! It genuinely troubles me, as it seems disturbingly expensive, particularly in terms of time invested

Its a tax on being female!!

..But I believe it's optional - as I just posted, I wear my hair short, and have done most of my life. And get a £30 haircut every 6 weeks or so. People don't cross the road to avoid me , I still have a job and a marriage. And I have an extra several hours a week.

Im starting to feel all 70s feminist here!

FeistyFrankie · 02/04/2026 09:00

Self-neglect - which is what you are describing - can be a symptom of depression. When I have been depressed in the past, often just mildly, these kind of tasks really irritated me. Just couldn't be bothered.

Might be worth taking stock of your mental health in general, if you feel this way.

I thought this thread was going to be about finding face masks and foot soaks etc tedious!

It depends upon whether you can find a good stylist though. Mine left to go on maternity leave. She cut my short hair in a feminine style which was nice. The one who took over from her left me looking like Bully Beef! 😬🤦🏼‍♀️😂

It’s not a tax on ‘being female’ - that would be for things that are needed (sanitary products etc).

Nobody HAS to spend the time and money to go to the hairdressers every few weeks and to spend time on pissing about with it with diffusers and straighteners. You CHOOSE to do that. I have short hair but I haven’t visited a hairdresser for about 7 years - a random woman up the road does it every few months for a small fee. It’s not great but who cares?

I can identify with this when I am mega depressed I cannot find the energy to wash my face, this is a fine observation of yours.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 02/04/2026 09:24

Although the cost of sanitary wear can be greatly mitigated by the use of (other people’s) toilet paper if you have a mind to.

AmazingGreatAunt · 02/04/2026 09:34

@binnibonnieboo
Ah well I can do the morning stuff easily.
Out of bed, clean teeth, into shower, wash hair, face and body, dry off, do face stuff, do hair, dress. Takes between 10 and 15 minutes and is non-negotiable.
No interest in much else because why?

skiprun · 02/04/2026 09:43

I get you op. It’s the monotonous everyday small tasks. Clicking fingers and just being ready would be my first genie wish

I'm intrigued/envious at how you can do all that in 10-15 mins?

Personal Development Assessment? 😂

Yes I wish I could live like a cat or dog or something and just have fur and go from sleeping to leaving the house without having to think about any of that stuff.

Edited

Cats spend ages cleaning themselves! To be honest, I think the fact that we are all so busy that we resent time spent on brief things to look after our physical selves is a really bad sign for where we currently are as a species.

Present what appearance? It’s how my hair is! It doesn’t matter if it’s chin length or down my back, it’s never taken less than 40 mins to diffuse
it needs to be chin length or below so I can tie it up put the way
i could air dry it sure but I don’t have 18hrs of the day to spend with wet hair
my hairdresser uses 2 hairdryers on it at a time

It's not self neglect, because I do it. I just find it a pain in the hole. And for soaks etc will never happen in my world! I do the bate minimum to be prsentable and clean. But I do do it.

I am like PP - it’s not difficult if you don’t spent half the day arsing about with hair, make up skin care routine and all the other primping

AmazingGreatAunt · 02/04/2026 12:09

@Janey90 Years of practice.
My record, in 2012, was getting up, washing, dressing, packing a suitcase and being out of the house on the way to catch a plane in 30 minutes.

No, twice a week. It could probably do with washing more often but it is too much effort!

LamentableShoes · 02/04/2026 13:30

binnibonnieboo · 02/04/2026 01:11

Yes, it's that feeling of, not this again, surely I just did that this morning? And I have to do it again tomorrow?

Everything you have said, I feel the same.

I enjoy the feeling of "having showered" and don't feel amazing when I have a slob day.

I wish I didn't have to wash my hair so often. It looks rank after the second night. There is no possible way I can wash and dry it and myself in 10 mins.

For me it's all the sensory feelings. Going from dry to wet to damp, warm and clothed to naked, brushing teeth, putting on deodorant, creams, whatever.

I just want to be dry and at a moderate temperature with nothing poking me or smearing my skin!

I do do it but find it incredibly tedious.

In addition I have a weird aversion to taking my top off (including any towel covering me) so I put off getting dressed too. Having a shower involves doing that several times especially if I also spend time in a bathrobe!
