Has anyone else seen a big rise in their water bill?

For the period 2024-25 (up to Feb 25) our water bill was £645.

Just got our latest bill for the period up to Feb 2026 which was £870.

The latest bill stated our costs are to rise to £1050 over the next 12 months PLUS another 8% in April.

We use the equivalent water of three people!! AND we were on a hosepipe ban for the majority of 2025.

Just what is this?? I’m assuming this is normal for everyone. What an absolute racket - cheers Yorkshire Water!!

Image to add salt to the wound (“Yorkshire Water pumped sewage into waterways for equivalent of 32 years in 2025, figures show”).

Has anyone else seen a big rise in their water bill?

We were told metered water is rising in April by South West Water. It’s disgraceful, the seas around us are polluted partially due to their discharge AND they have released plastic nurdle things onto beaches due to improper management, they have many unfixed leaks and then we get a hosepipe ban even though it rained for five months straights because the reservoirs leak too.

But the government have already said they won’t be capping amenities like water and energy, so they will all enjoy fat bonuses again next year whilst we get sick from polluted lakes and seas.

Are you on a meter OP?

Are you on a meter OP?

@27pilates Yes we are 🙁 our water use is relatively low for our occupancy.

Yep, this time last year my bill was £90. I got my new bill last week, and it is £145, and that is with a little note congratulating me on using less water than last year and to keep going to get it down (and I am billed every 6 months so my usage is very small anyway). £90 of my new bill is standing charges that I can not reduce.
We also had a hosepipe ban for a lot of last year.
I am with Thames Water.

@HappyHalloweeen This is exactly how I feel. So angry! The rising bills are one thing but coupled with their management and profit margins, it’s downright appalling.

Unfortunately nothing seems to be happening, we all know it’s happening and we can argue but absolutely nothing happens. And it’s not like you can switch to a different water company. It makes me livid.

@XenoBitch that’s really awful - the note to congratulate you for using less water is a joke… All the while, the leaks in their systems are gushing water without maintenance/repair.

Yep. Crazy water bill. I was assuming it's some kind of mistake.

Brewtiful · 31/03/2026 19:48

Yes ours is huge. I really resent it because it's one of the few bills where you can't shop around, compare and choose to use another company so they have no incentive to be competitive.

ArcticBells · 31/03/2026 19:50

Monthly bill will be £75 (just me). Time to get a water meter

Me too. Anglian Water and it's hiked up to well over £1,000 now. It's just about doubled in price in a very few years.

Merseymum1980 · 31/03/2026 19:52

Same issue only.my ds and i

Ninerainbows · 31/03/2026 19:53

We pay 6 monthly and our March bill was 25% higher (£400). 3 of us, low users. No hosepipe, slimline dishwasher and DH and I shower at the gym a few days a week.

I think other than not being able to choose that's what annoys me so much about it. It's jumped so significantly in such a short amount of time!

RampantIvy · 31/03/2026 19:59

Fellow Yorkshire Water customer here. I feel your pain.

Newname71 · 31/03/2026 19:59

Mine has gone up to £78 a month but after a burst pipe and no running water for 6 days last year I will never complain again. It’s worth every penny to have water piped to the house and to be able to flush the toilet!

danglethedingle · 31/03/2026 20:02

Mine is up about a third, I wouldn't mind so much if they were good at their jobs. Severn Trent Water have poisoned the Severn, the Wye and many of the smaller rivers and streams with raw sewage. They have done nothing to prevent run off from chicken farms entering the water ways. Added to which our water tastes so foul and is so scummy we have bought a water filter to make it drinkable. No doubt the shareholders will be getting a nice pay out as usual.

purpleme12 · 31/03/2026 20:03

Up until April 2025 we were paying £27
Our usage actually had gone down as well, not increased or the same.
But just because of the price rise, we're now paying £36
It's quite e big increase

LittleMy77 · 31/03/2026 20:08

We’re also with Yorkshire Water. Out monthly direct debit has gone up to £94. It’s up £23 on last year!

It was less than £50 3 years ago

Wouldn’t mind so much if their infrastructure wasn’t shit and they hadn’t paid their CEO a covert £1M+ bonus last year

Still not worth us getting a water meter tho

LakieLady · 31/03/2026 20:39

I'm paying £47 a month to Southern Water, which is a huge amount for a single person imo. It's my third biggest bill after council tax and energy.

I won't get a bill till May or June, but I looked online and according to the meter reading taken at the end of December, they reckon I'm using £1.03 worth of water a day. I'm hoping this means my monthly payment will go down later in the year. I'm not holding my breath though, they've been fined several times in the last year or two for untreated sewage discharges and I daresay they'll put the charges up because they have to "upgrade" infrastructure and it'll be costly.

They also wasted huge amounts due to leaks and managed to have a thousands of homes in the Tunbridge Wells area without any water supply for several days last year.

They're an absolute bloody shower and not fit for purpose. I bet their directors will still get fat bonuses though, and the shareholders will still get dividends.

Droppit · 31/03/2026 20:43

Same here (Severn Trent). Should never have been privatised. Absolute shit show.

Goodadvice1980 · 31/03/2026 21:09

I wonder, as unfortunate customers if we should all just stop paying our water bills. I’m seriously fed up of seeing water companies getting away with polluting rivers and seas and not being held accountable for it.

As for the CEO salaries and bonus culture …… bastards.

greenteaandlimes · 31/03/2026 21:20

Just received an email today from Thames Water telling me my bill is going up 22% - cheers fuckers 😫

JulietteHasAGun · 31/03/2026 21:28

Yes, think the rateable value has gone up to over £100 a month. Have just had a meter fitted, literally this week. So am hoping that will make a difference and be cheaper. Only two of us here.
