Why am I so messy and disorganised

That’s it really, I can never find anything, my car is a tip, I don’t seem to be able to look after anything without ruining it. Is it just me?

Nope, I'm the same. I feel like trying to keep on top of stuff is a full time job.

Pandolly · 31/03/2026 15:27

Have you got adhd?
I'm the same and unfortunately no matter how organised I try to be it just doesn't stick. It is frustrating and annoying but also something I literally can't help.
Don't be so mean to yourself, there are things that you can do to be more organised or you can accept that life will always be a bit messy as it's who you are and at the end of the day a bit of mess isn't a big deal in the grand scheme.

I'm the same but I blame it on my ADHD and try to live with it rather than expecting myself to be able to have an organised mind, or house, or car by effort of Will.

It’s like my work laptop for instance (this is what made me post today) it is in such a state, it’s as if I don’t care about anything?

I make sure the kids are looked after etc but I can never ever find socks they are like gold dust. When I walk into peoples homes and it is clean and tidy it makes me feel so rubbish.

I don’t think I do have ADHD it just isn’t one of my priorities for some bizarre reason

What i have found helps is to have a place for things and get into the habit of always putting things there. I have mastered this in the communal spaces in my home and as a result I can keep them quite tidy.
Not got those sorted in the bedrooms though and as a result they ate a pigsty.

Throw away as much as possible too.

Whatifaliensexisted · 31/03/2026 15:39

It’s like work, I just don’t care about it as much as other people do. I’m terrible

You’ve answered your own question. It isn’t a priority for you which translates to I don’t actually try to be organised

Whatifaliensexisted · 31/03/2026 16:21

Does anybody else feel this way though or is it just me?

You just need to crack on with it!
Find an area and work on it.

I do. Always been messy and forgetful. Has got worse in menopause. I don't think I have ADHD and am wary of the medicalisation of everything. I think my brain is just too full.

I am using lists and PostIts to help. I have taken to leaving the frig door open (it needs to be shut firmly to close). Drives DH mad ( understandably). So now I have put a Post It on the frig door to help.
