Why do people try to sell such complete tat on Vinted?!

LegencyMonsters · 30/03/2026 16:34

By “tat,” I mean the selection of clothing on Vinted: tops and trousers so worn they’ve got more bobbles than fabric, stains and holes that absolutely did not come from “one tiny snag.”

I’ve literally binned better stuff without a second thought, so I’m honestly fascinated by the confidence of someone listing their ancient M&S top... complete with washing‑machine ventilation holes for a fiver!!

What exactly possesses people to upload clothing that is only suitable for the bin?

I also think this about people selling Primark/Temu/Shein stuff second hand - it’s poor quality to start with I definitely don’t want it after you’ve given it a few spins in your washing machine!

I agree! even at a £1 its not worth the fees & postage.. you might as well buy new!

I happy that you are able to buy new clothes and throw them away once you've worn them a few times but not everybody has that luxury.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 30/03/2026 16:40

Poverty. It was mentioned on the news about people trying to cope with the COL crisis by selling their possessions. If they can get anything back for items, it’s a win.

BillieWiper · 30/03/2026 16:40

They must somehow enjoy the process of trying to sell stuff?

Otherwise it does seem a complete waste of time and kinda shameful to even show the world you think someone would buy something that tatty.

Or maybe they are desperately broke and it really is a last resort as they need to sell anything they have just to put money in the meter for another day.

Who said I wore my clothing a few times?

Im clearly talking about people who are selling clothing fit for the bin and not reselling. Its delusional to think anyone wants that crap.

Some people are skint and need the money for their 'crap'

hazelberry · 30/03/2026 16:43

Some people are skint and need the money for their 'crap'

but their crap is literally crap.

Clothing with holes in or bleach stains on are not fit to be worn. Its fit for the bin or a rags.

Ihateboris · 30/03/2026 16:49

Yes, I understand what you are saying Op. I get that people are really skint and trying to sell whatever they can, but what I can't fathom is why anyone would BUY the stuff you are describing I.e. clothes with holes, stains etc?

Goatsarebest · 30/03/2026 16:56

People can try and sell what they want to. If people buy it is completely another matter. And why people buy what you, or anyone else's opinion, is 'crap' is not anyone else's business, is it.
The really great thing is nobody has to buy anything that is for sale on any of these sites and as a consequence nobody has to judge what is for sale, either.

Clearly they can buy what they want .... Thats not what this thread is about. Are you one of the people trying to get rid of your crap with holes in ?

Hmm….maybe for playing Cinderella before the fairy godmother turns up 🤔

TheAutumnCrow · 30/03/2026 17:32

Oh there very much is a ‘specialist’ market for shoes, undergarments, and all sorts of clothes. Worn is good. Unwashed is good.

Ebay used to be full of it until they cottoned on, so to speak.

Morepositivemum · 30/03/2026 17:49

I realised lately that I kept clothes I had an attachment to because they fitted well or looked well on wayyy too long assuming they still looked as good even though they were then misshapen/ a bit bobbly. It was actually only through threads on here that made me begin to see that actually the things I thought ‘this will help someone’ probably wouldn’t. I’d guess the people on vinted might think similar

Catcatcatcatcat · 30/03/2026 17:51

Because they are desperate for money.

PuppiesProzacProsecco · 30/03/2026 18:03

The thing is though, what one person sees as trash is someone else's treasure. I have a wardrobe filled with luxury natural fabrics, many designer made, mostly sourced on Vinted and eBay.

It's not unusual for these to be listed in crap condition - stains, rips, missing zips, even old or active moth infestations. I buy items for a few pounds and repair, alter and restore them to continue their lives. It's unusual for there to not be a cashmere sweater or a silk blouse in my freezer to kill off any potential moth eggs/larvae.

I also recently restored a pair of absolutely trashed Gucci suede loafers that looked like they were at the end of their life. They're now "beautifully lived in" but have years of life left.

I've also been known to purchase a £1 used primark shirt or a pair of wash faded Shein denim dungarees with a missing button and use them to make my son's Halloween costume (zombie scarecrow anyone?)

Blackcatginger · 30/03/2026 18:06

So much Shein on there. I wish we could filter it out of results! ☹️

But the answer is poverty

ContentedAlpaca · 30/03/2026 18:08

I've ordered two things from shein and they looked great and have lasted very well. I get lots of compliments on one of them
I don't want to support shein though would be happy to buy second hand.

Overtheatlantic · 30/03/2026 18:34

I’m not sure it’s poverty. I think it could be creative people being frugal and enjoying the challenge of repurposing the “Crap”.

I have bought shein when I was losing weight as it was cheap and I have some 'house jumpers' that are from shein as they were only £3-4 each. Shein is just hit and miss. Some stuff is decent and some stuff is terrible.
I would never buy shein from vinted though! by the time you add on postage, you could buy it brand new from shein direct

It could be and I understand to a degree if it was high end brands

You could, but for me it's more about not wanting to support shein directly because of their practises.
