Why do people try to sell such complete tat on Vinted?!

By “tat,” I mean the selection of clothing on Vinted: tops and trousers so worn they’ve got more bobbles than fabric, stains and holes that absolutely did not come from “one tiny snag.”

I’ve literally binned better stuff without a second thought, so I’m honestly fascinated by the confidence of someone listing their ancient M&S top... complete with washing‑machine ventilation holes for a fiver!!

What exactly possesses people to upload clothing that is only suitable for the bin?

Wow. Is that right? I didn’t realise that.

Well that’s me no longer donating then (at least until they can give a detailed spec of what is acceptable). I will spread the word, as don’t want to offend them.

I wouldn’t donate shitty clothes but the fact the charity sees fit to distribute clothes (that they presumably think are okay) and people who apparently have nothing are complaining?

So being poor means you should be happy with dirty and holey clothes? Do you think they should eat rotten food as well?

Funniest ones are overpriced items described as “very good”, with a big stain somewhere where the seller says “I’m sure it’ll come out in the wash” 🤣 as if I have some kind of magic washing machine that’s somehow different from theirs that clearly did not get the stain out!

Also, selling items for £1. I couldn’t be arsed walking to the post office for a pound!

Not clothes, but was browsing Disney Princess things for a gift. One of the listings was an Elsa figurine. The description was “excellent” but her head had been broken off completely!

How on earth do they get away with that.

It’s this that drives me mad. Fine, try to sell anything you want on vinted. But at least describe it honestly. Don’t list it as ‘very good’ if it’s got gigantic great holes in the sleeves.

That’s my bugbear too re stains. ‘Will come out in wash.’ Bloody wash it then if you’re so sure!

Here's a prime example..

there is very specific group of men who spend a lot of money on shoes like that 👀 😂😂

Fingalscave · 31/03/2026 13:52

I don't object to people trying to sell tatty things on Vinted, but I find it very annoying when they describe stuff as new without tags when it's obviously well used. I was looking at handbags and there were tears in the lining, stains, scratches and dirt. Most said something like Only used a few times. In that case, it's not new!

rememberingthem · 31/03/2026 13:54

Ihateboris · 31/03/2026 10:41

Really...I've been thinking of ideas for a side hustle 🤔

I am a flight attendant and lots of my colleagues sell their worn tights and shoes for good money, theres a big market for them 😳

Crikeyalmighty · 31/03/2026 14:17

ContentedAlpaca · 30/03/2026 18:08

I've ordered two things from shein and they looked great and have lasted very well. I get lots of compliments on one of them
I don't want to support shein though would be happy to buy second hand.

I confess I have a couple of things from them that are excellent - sheer black shirts ( like chiffon) that put over dresses in an evening on hols - at £10 each they are some of my best buys - I also recently bought a pack of 3 heavily lace trimmed hi rise knickers/ shorts style - nice quality, have washed well and are no different to what I would buy at M&S - £6.75 for the pack

You're kidding me! 😧
What do they want, or are they paying people to take them away?

JustSawJohnny · 31/03/2026 14:31

I just never look at anything on there that isn't either new with tags, new without tags or very good - or that don't have lots of photos.

Easy to filter out the crap on there, IMO.

Ihateboris · 30/03/2026 17:15

Some dirty old bastard will be wanking over them next week.

Same with the old knickers section!

Unfortunately Africa has become huge a dumping ground for the world’s clothing waste:

Why do people try to sell such complete tat on Vinted?!
LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 31/03/2026 14:43

Presumably it’s the charities dumping them? Why are they giving them clothes and then they are burning them FFS?

Anyway I would hate to add to the waste. Sounds like the charities aren’t actually doing their jobs so I won’t send clothes or money.

I don’t know, but I suspect that a large proportion of it is those ‘charities’ who put clothing bags through people’s doors. Some of them sell these clothes, in bulk, to business people/market stall holders in Africa, who then sell them on to local people.

May also be those clothing retailers who put clothes recycling bins in shops, pretending that they are environmentally friendly.

hereismydog · 31/03/2026 15:30

Bobbly clothes aren’t bad for sending little ones to nursery! I don’t send my DS to his childminder in anything nice as he’ll get paint/mud/other fun stuff all over himself, so I have been getting him some ‘used’ looking stuff from Vinted just so if they get stained, it doesn’t matter!

CruCru · 31/03/2026 15:39

I wonder if people just don’t see the wear on their own clothes. There’s often an attitude of they paid good money for this thing so SOMEONE must want it.

i used to help out in sorting second hand uniform at our last school. It was astounding how often people would donate summer dresses (say) covered in black marker pen and with nearly all the buttons missing. It was my job to be ruthless and bag up all the stuff that we couldn’t sell on.

LargeAmericanoQuick · 31/03/2026 15:42

You're not wrong, op. I was thinking something similar yesterday when I was trying to trawl through pages of absolute junk or massively overpriced supposed new without tags.

I think vinted should take down listings after so many months unsold, just to clear it and make searching easier.

Myneighbourisanosyoldgit · 31/03/2026 15:50

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 31/03/2026 10:37

Because if you are over a certain size, charity shops are crap. And the clothes stink.

I'm a size 12, you are looking in the wrong places which are best avoided if your local charity shops are crap with stinky clothles.😄 I wash my stuff with detergent and laundry disinfectant, doesn't everyone, even if you bought it brand new? It's a bit skanky to buy and wear anything without washing it, god knows who has handled it in the making, packing process and being on the shop floor handed by the great unwashed.

Lastofthesummerwines · 31/03/2026 16:00

A charity shop by me is always moaning about what absolute shit she gets given because people are scared to throw anything away. You see it on posts now here and fb if anyone mentions having a clear out they are told you should donate that here or there. I saw an influencer on FB the other day putting pics of his empty kitchen cupboards after a clear out and someone asked did you throw it away or donate it!? Who wants half a bag of flour, a few out of date sauce packets, and the dregs of a few bottles of sauce!!
There's no in between nowadays youve got the throwaway society who literally wear something once and it goes in the bin and then the other end of the scale the ones who wear use stuff to death and then try and pass it on to someone else when it's knackered.

I always notice this with shoes for sale on vinted... Some people's definition of brand new 🤣🤣 you see trainers that I walk my dog in better nick trainers and yet someone lists them as worn once brand new 🤣🤣 and very good condition even worse!! People are oblivious ... They can't see that sometimes you just need to chuck stuff away!

If you are size 12, then what do you mean I’m looking in the wrong place? Do you think i mean over size 10?

All charity shops have that smell about them - hardly convinces you to buy an item of clothing! Of course I would wash it before wearing but I am always paranoid that I can still smell it.

I don’t wash brand new clothes when I buy them and don’t know anyone who does - what a waste of water. And ‘skanky’? Nice. Still I don’t call factory workers ‘the great unwashed’ so I guess we are all different.

nearlylovemyusername · 31/03/2026 16:14

I can sort of understand someone is trying to sell such things because of povery.

What I'm really puzzled about is many listings of some very short / deep cut cloths which leave little to imagination and sellers don't even try to hide their faces, it's pretty much holiday or bedroom photos, almost everything on display. What is this?

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 31/03/2026 16:18

Can I ask why any of you go onto Vinted so much if you are just judging other people’s stuff?

is there a rule on Vinted forcing the sale of every listed item?

And so much more practical and less stressful than the £60 white Paul Smith t-shirt that a child wore to my nursery class a few years ago…🤣

I did warn the parents that I could not be held responsible!
