No it shouldn't. It's none of our business. Would you expect to know why someone from Sainsbury's has been sacked just because you've bought your bananas from them? Or why a Sky employee was sacked because you pay for the movie channel?

Utter tosh. You’re not compelled to buy your bananas from Sainsburys any more than you have to buy Sky services. Not so with the BBC. You have to have a licence to watch any TV regardless of BBC content, so the licence fee is a tax. And as a tax payer you have a right to disclosure.

God why do you want to know so much?

No you don't. If a civil servant was fired you would not have any right to know why. The same applies here. The reason he was sacked is personal information under GDPR and can only be disclosed in specific situations which do not apply here

Just another excuse to take aim at the BBC. Ignore them.
Oh ETA. I see they have continued to try and claim that taxpayers have ' a right to know ' which as you point out they absolutely don't.
I expect it won't stop them ranting on about how terrible and let's get rid of public broadcasting. Predictable and tedious.

IberianLynx · 30/03/2026 20:34

The BBC has a long history of employing sex offenders. It is definitely something related to that. Just on BBC radio there was Saville, Westwood, Peel, Lee-Travis, probably more.

John Peel?

You have no idea. Could be neither

You’re right, it’s conjecture. I’m struggling to think what someone could complain of about his “personal conduct” which would lead to his immediate sacking which isn’t either violence or sexual misconduct though!

PandoraSocks · 30/03/2026 20:46

YourMagentaCat · 30/03/2026 20:42

John Peel?

I think he married an underaged (for the UK not for where he was married) girl when in the US.

B1anche · 30/03/2026 12:55

Does it really matter?
Why should it be public knowledge?

Well I can't speak for everyone but I'm a nosy bastard and am dying to know.

I feel you speak for anyone who clicked on the thread!

John Peel?

I’m always amazed that his sexual misconduct is forgotten about because he is a music legend. But yes, look it up in his wiki - a whole section on his sexual misconduct

Dymaxion · 30/03/2026 21:39

It makes me wonder if the new DG has asked for all the dirt on everyone, historical or otherwise, so he doesn't end up with any suprises when he starts the job ?
Given the Beeb's track record, it would be the first thing I would be checking before walking through the door !

MyLimeGuide · 30/03/2026 21:51

Another reason to hate the BBC then :-( Scott mills was the only reason I still listened to the radio. He was so funny. Bye bye bbc I DONT love you.

ThingsThatMakeYouGoHmmmmmmmmm · 30/03/2026 22:21

Sexual assault or ' activity ' with a male child in his teens.

ProudAmberTurtle · 30/03/2026 22:25

It's now been revealed that Mills was arrested in 2016 following allegations about his involvement with a teenage boy when he worked at Radio 1 in the late 90s. Why does this keep happening at the BBC?

ImDoneOnceAndForAll2 · 30/03/2026 22:30

"Not enough evidence and charges were dropped"

Im not saying his not guilty but noone can say he is guilty either !

LisaVanderpumpy · 30/03/2026 22:30

Oh race across the world I thought he came across controlling and unpleasant towards his partner, who was young enough to be his son, and personally I find people with such huge age gaps the oldest is usually a controlling arse

springvegetables · 30/03/2026 22:34

Dont forget though this was 30 years ago. And he would of only been 23 /23

If there were actual sexual offenses then ofcourse thats terrible.

But if he had a relationship at that age with say 18/ 19 year old. Not much difference in age

If the boy was under 16, regardless thats a different story completly

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 30/03/2026 22:49

@Onadark Er! Not now. They’ve had a lot of inaction in the past and now it’s all systems go. New DG arriving and they know the public won’t stand for misconduct. One assumes it was a sackable offence or it will come to a tribunal.

MyJustCat · 30/03/2026 22:51

The law was different back then, the age of consent for homosexual relationships was 18 not 16, it changed in 2001.

BeardofHagrid · 30/03/2026 23:05

I used to love the Radio 1 Scott Mills Show podcast, I listened to every single one pretty much. I did think he was slightly creepy to Chris Stark at times. Chris was way younger, I think Scott “found” him at a student gig in Southampton iirc. He was like a work experience boy basically who was given this fantastic opportunity to work at the BBC, all thanks to Scott. Sometimes it would really put me on edge. For example one episode where he tried to get Chris to fart for him, he just wouldn’t let it go and kept pushing it and I could hear Chris’s discomfort. There were other things too, long lost from my memory. He loved innuendo, pushing the envelope. It can go from funny banter to creepy and wrong very quickly. These male presenters’ egos go out of control. They think they can do absolutely anything.

Why should it be public knowledge? Are you serious? it's a punitive tax we all have to pay - they are our state broadcaster which gets £3.5 billion from those of us who are still pay it - it pays his wages, we have the right to know and should have a voice to get rid of this diabolical tax and replace it with a subscription model but we have the LF inflicted on us AT THE MOMENT - THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE there is something rotten at the core of BBC management and HR processes which for some reason people of his ilk are drawn towards do you really need a list? It is scandal ridden and frankly a national embarrassment its glory days are long behind it

🤣🤣🤣 Calm down. It's just a broadcasting company.

Basilmandy · 30/03/2026 23:10

What always strikes me is how much presenters get paid @ the bbc. Yes it’s talent, not everyone can do it, blah blah - but you won’t find NHS neurosurgeons on 330k fgs!

In fact it surprises me how much the BBC pay most people who work there. Salaries always seem really high compared to the rest of the market, apart from the most junior.

The “most junior” is the vast majority of staff though isn’t it, and will probby include nearly everyone making programmes and running your local radio station etc. my info is a bit out of date but a friend worked there for a bit and said most people were paid like £25-35k which is pretty much bang average. Managers will be on more I guess.

As tax payers we fund the NHS. Do you think that every time a nurse is sacked there should be a public announcement?

Nurses who are sacked for serious misconduct are referred to the Nursing and Midwifery Council for a review into their fitness to practice though. And those are public.
