To hate it when the clocks go forward!

Not helped by the fact that I stupidly arranged an activity this morning at 11 a bit of a drive away, so we’re all on a schedule.

I’m going to feel out of sorts until October.

I’m a natural night owl and the sense that we’re on the wrong time never really leaves me.

I’d so love if we had a period of time when the clocks go back an extra hour, where we’re an hour behind GMT rather than either on it or ahead of it.

I don’t really care if I am BU tbh!

I agree because I hate it when it's dark in the morning when I get up. It doesn't bother me when it's dark in the evening.

JohnBullshit · 30/03/2026 16:29

The older I get, the longer it takes for me to adjust. Stupid, really. I miss breakfast thinking I might as well leave it until lunch now, then I want to eat by four in the afternoon. Like a hungry cat. It makes no logical sense at all. My stomach should be thinking it's three, not four. By the time I actually eat, I'll probably have gone off the idea.

Woke up at 6 yesterday which was 5 then went back to sleep for a bit. Dd slept until 8 which was 7. Morning was a rush to get to dd swimming lesson then grandparents for Easter egg hunt, and felt groggy all day. First day Easter hols today and dd woke up at 5.50, went downstairs, putting lights on as was still dark and tv blaring in lounge. I went and turned it down and went back to bed until 7. But we’re both knackered today. I prefer bright, warm days followed by chilly, dark nights where you can relax and get cozy so wish the clocks would just stay the same.

Emmz1510 · 30/03/2026 21:20

It literally has no impact on my life, apart from a brief moment when I wake up that first morning and think oh it’s actually 8 not 7! And you gotta love the lighter nights surely? It doesn’t even affect my daughter’s sleep but she’s 11. I suppose it did a little when she was a baby.

I don't love the lighter nights. Sun still up past 7.30 annoys me and there's plenty of the year we would have that even without the clocks changing.

I don't have any problems adjusting to the clocks changing, I just don't see any benefit to bothering. GMT year round would be my preference.

Haribosweets · 30/03/2026 21:52

The time change doesn't bother me as in I just get on with it but I much prefer GMT time. I love October onwards when its dark at 4.30pm ish and I can get home from work all cosy with curtains shut and pyjamas, dressing gown etc. I feel like I can't do that now with it being light until 10pm! Love Autumn / Winter but not summer 🤣

I hate this clock change as the mornings get dark again. I don't care about light evenings, but I find it really hard the first week or after the clocks go forward when it's dark again when I leave the house.

Crikey. What time do you leave the house?
Sunrise was at 6.45 this morning.

In reply to @GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing - sorry, YABU. I love the lighter evenings.

YellowScarf · 30/03/2026 22:34

Well this is the first I knew that they’d gone forward!

Nope. Literally didn’t have a clue.

Hannah Fry posted a reel yesterday basically saying all the clock change does is cause accidents and health issues. We should stay at GMT all year round.

How does it cause accidents and health issues?

Makes me more tired losing an hour, for a few days. I love the lighter evenings, though.

Nope. Literally didn’t have a clue.

Someone at work hadn’t realised either, first she knew was when I mentioned it this afternoon. She said because all her clocks change automatically it just passed her by.

Did you really not notice that it was lighter for longer in the evening yesterday?

But that’s been happening for a few weeks as we move into spring/ summer. Maximum change occurs around the equinox so day length has been changing reasonably quickly anyway,

RampantIvy · 30/03/2026 23:18

Sunset is still before 7.30 now. I don't take much notice of what actual time it is dark enough to close the curtains so I could easily not notice if I didn't have dog and DC working to a slightly different schedule for a day and clocks in the cars that don't automatically update.

SilverPink · 31/03/2026 10:26

The people who prefer GMT do realise it still wouldn’t make much difference in high summer - it still wouldn’t be dark at 4.30 pm - just more likely 9.30 instead of 10.30

Yes, I'd still prefer that. Means fewer evenings where it's light past 8 and nothing later than 9.30. And no hassle, however minor, of changing the clocks at all. I have no idea why they experimented with BST year round for a while but never tried GMT year round.

I just don’t understand when people say the clocks changing affects them.

just carry on as normal.

Affects the body clock, can easily take a week to get accustomed to the change for lots of people. Really annoying that so many just tell us to ignore it. Ditto jetlag. Just because something doesn't bother you, don't lecture those of us unfortunates who are suffering. It's a real thing

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 31/03/2026 11:10

Do you find it the same whether the clocks are going back or forwards, @Bertiebiscuit, or are both equally difficult for you? I honestly didn't know that it affected some people so badly - you have my sympathy.

Ginmonkeyagain · 30/03/2026 16:20

But generally people finish work at about 5 or 6pm - why would you want it to be dark then - lighter evenings are so much nicer in terms of travelling home from work or being able to do stuff after work.

Mumsnet is the only place when i have seen people actively welcome the dark misery of the short winter days.

I love my walks home from work when it’s pitch black. It’s calming. Daylight feels chaotic.

Walking home after dark in well lit streets is one thing. Our country roads don't have street lights once you leave the village, so walking in daylight is more preferable, and safer.

Ginmonkeyagain · 01/04/2026 07:40

And it just feels nicer. It is horrible leaving work at 6pm and it is already dark. It feels like the day is already over.

I prefer it! It's more interesting somehow. I like the times of the year when I can see sunrise or sunset from the train.

muddyford · 01/04/2026 07:52

The mornings had got nice and light and the evenings were stretching out on their own. Now the mornings are dark again. I feel I have jetlag for a few weeks. Bloody ridiculous we still do this (I know other countries do it too).

Boomer55 · 01/04/2026 07:57

I always feel out of sorts for a couple of days, but it passes.

I just wish they would leave it on BST - I hate darker nights and mornings for so long.
