To tell my friend about my car?

DH got a new car today- my friend text me this morning to say hi how am l etc and asked what l've been up to. I said not much but dh got a new car today with a pic - she replied oh you're obviously doing OK and then said l was showing off. I really wasn't - wouldn't have mentioned it tbh. Aibu to think this was an odd response? Known her years and thought she knew l wasn't materialistic at all. Feel a bit shit now.

Are you sure she wasn't joking?

Bit weird to say it out of the blue if you don't have form for showing off?

I am not a showy off person - l buy my clothes from charity shops, am overweight, been driving the same car for nearly 10 years so seemed odd

What an odd response from her. My best friend sent me a pic of her partner's new truck thing and my response was a laughing emoji and 'you won't lose that in a car park' (it was orange). It was clearly pricy, but it never occurred to me to think she was showing off.

Probably just caught her at a bad moment.

wouldn't have mentioned it tbh.

But...you did mention it? AND sent a completely unprompted picture! So I don't get what you mean by saying you 'wouldn't have mentioned it'. I can see why she felt you were showing off - she asked what you were up to, not your DH, and definitely didn't ask to see a photo of the car, so it does come across like you were desperate to shoehorn it into the conversation!

Yes because l know she is interested in cars. And she asked what l've been up to today.

I disagree, she was asked what she was up to, I'd take that as what is going on in your world, and a new car would be included in that.

When l said l wouldn't have mentioned it l mean if she hadn't text me first , l wouldn't have messaged her to tell her about it.

She's just being odd. I'd ignore it, unless she does it again.

NormasArse · 28/03/2026 23:57

Are you sure she wasn’t joking- as you aren’t materialistic?

I think your friend is weird. Why not mention a new car? I'd find it a normal bit of life news to mention.
