To be sick of cars with giant exhausts

My evening walk was ruined by some moron who drove past me in a car with an exhaust like a canon. As he slowed down, the car made a banging, exploding sound like a load of fireworks going off. The poor dog yelped and put his tail between his legs (he’s a puppy and that was only his third time out).

  1. What is going on in their heads? I get that some people love cars. Fine. Save your money, buy a nice car and enjoy it. But why do they have to modify it so it screeches and bangs and upsets everyone else? The driver was in his late 30s/early 40s ffs! What the hell is it with these people? Do they just want attention? Is it spite? Is it revenge on the world? I can hear them when I’m watching TV, they ruin my evening walks, and they even wake me up at night.

  2. How do they get away with it? The police do nothing. I remember people complaining about these twats 20 years ago.

Agreed it is very annoying. One persons “enjoyment” ruins the peace for hundreds of others.

There was a government petition about this a while ago but it didn’t get anywhere. Here is a link to a similar (ish) current petition;

Petition: Legislate to reduce motorcycle noise to lower, standardised levels

Bring in a law requiring all motorcycles to have their exhaust noise silenced to standardised levels, without any exceptions for existing machines.

I had a courtesy car for a short time that had the pops and bangs. I’ll be honest, I really enjoyed it despite feeling how you do before I drove it. It was really fun and bought a lot of joy to me the few weeks I drove it. That’s why they do it. They like it.

they can be factory fitted as an optional extra and are completely legal.

I feel the same about motorbikes. I thought they were meant to be tested for noise levels at MOT but there's obviously a way round it.
