To put a note on my door saying we’re not 1B?!

So we live at number 1. Then there’s 1a,1B,1c and 1d. Not in the right order which doesn’t help. At least once a week, someone will knock on our door thinking we’re 1b. Mostly people off Facebook buying stuff, sometimes takeaways. It’s really annoying, I want to put a sign up saying we’re not 1b, this is where they are with a map. My husband says no, just take our number down. I worry then that our deliveries etc won’t reach us.

I’ve drawn a map, hopefully the photo loads quickly.

Yes I would try it.

Put a note saying that 1a,b,c and are either side of you.

I can see how it would be quite confusing, as letters are usually associated with flats and so they probably assume that your home is a flat/shared house.

Farewelltothatid · 27/03/2026 19:41

That's quite confusing OP.

Yes I would try putting some sort of notice up as you suggest. Unfortunately I don't have too much faith people will take any notice if it , but it's definitely worth trying.

This is true. I have a stern notice saying "callers by appointment only" but people still knock selling stuff and collecting. I ignore them.

Get a ring doorbell then you can answer without getting up.

We have a sign on our gate because our house has a name rather than a number - the six original houses are named, but new ones are numbered - but the houses either side of us have numbers. So delivery people who aren’t local always assume we’re no 4 as they pass 1, 2, and 3 then it’s us.

Our sign says along the lines of “X house. No 3 -> No 4 <-” It’s wordy but it works and stops me answering the door constantly to delivery people.

it would have been easier if they had considered the original houses when numbering. Where PIL lived it went 1, 2, name house, 4, 5, 6, name house, 8… which was much more logical than 1-8 with 6 named houses dotted between them

You can contact the council with a proposed change of address. For example you could be Tree House, 1 acacia Avenue, and put up a sign with Tree House on it.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 28/03/2026 06:59

I'd ignore dh,what would taking your number achieve? I feel you as on our street there are 4 of our number. So im 5 King St, next door is 5a, flats down tge road is 5 the court house King St then across the road is flat 5, oak house King Street. I've got a sign, no fucker reads it.

I had no idea you could do this! Useful information.

Needanadultgapyear · 28/03/2026 07:31

It won’t make a difference we live up a lane there are three houses we all have easily readable signs on our gates.
We regularly all get things misdelievered I think the drivers can’t be bothered checking and just dump stuff somewhere - a PC monitor by a gate in the rain.

Octavia64 · 28/03/2026 07:33

Yes absolutely

FasterMichelin · 28/03/2026 07:34

Yeah I can’t understand your husbands rationale at all.

A simple “we see number 1, not 1b (this is upstairs etc)” will be the most helpful option for whoever’s trying to work out where 1b is.

TalulahJP · 28/03/2026 07:38

do the houses have clear numbers on all of them? if not i’d start with that.

and id stick up a paper sign saying “this is not” the number youre not.

if it works i’d consider paying to have it made in plastic.

PussInBin20 · 28/03/2026 07:38

Why do they think you are 1B when you are next to 1D? And not next to 1A for instance which would be more logical for their mistake?

Weird.

paintedpanda · 28/03/2026 07:44

We have a sign on our door as we have a very similar street name to another which is off our very street (think Buckingham Close leading to Buckingham Crescent). The people who live at 12 Buckingham Crescent get a lot of visitors (taxis, deliveries, ambulances, carers - including one who actually tried the door handle! etc) but us at 12 Buckingham Close have very young babies and a dog that goes mad at the door! We have a sign up right under the doorbell which reads “before you ring the doorbell, please ensure you are at the right address, this is Buckingham Close, not Crescent!”. It’s mostly worked, although we occasionally get the doorbell going and then a delivery driver looking awkward and running away before letting us get to the door and apologising, which I find a little rude.
I would definitely recommend putting a sign up. It’s filtered about 90% of our wrong callers.

StuntNun · 28/03/2026 07:47

I think you should put the map up on your door, then people can easily find the right house.

RodeoClown · 28/03/2026 08:01

My dog groomer has a sign on the door saying ‘do not pull’ where the pull is in bigger letters somas a consequence everyone seems to pull the door because their brains read ‘pull’.

Fairislesweater · 28/03/2026 09:11

I think a sign is a good idea. Houses that don’t conform to the accepted norm are always going to be a bit confusing so why not help people out and (hopefully) make your own life a bit quieter at the same time. I used to live at a named house - there were a group at one end of the road, followed by number houses. We always told eg takeaways people we were next door to number 1. They would say ‘so number 2 then?’. If we were number two we’d have just said that wouldn’t we….?? Also typically it would have been three next to one anyway in the Uk. I’ve also delivered addressed cards to a while street of named houses nearby. Posties are undervalued imo 😂

ValleyClouds · 28/03/2026 09:28

I have almost this exact problem and I’ve been living here six years and nothing has stopped it. Signs on doors fade, explicit delivery instructions of That Is Not My Property and Neither Is That haven’t worked

For context, if I lived at new build 1 Strawberry Fields, Strawberry Road, there is also a 1 Strawberry Road on the street. To cap it off I the new build begins next to 10 Strawberry Road and he has just put a smart new fence up which is closer to my property than his and parcels are going over his fence now as well

Bloody nightmare I feel for you OP but have no solutions either !

Blushingm · 28/03/2026 09:29

I’m number 2. There’s a 2a and a 2b and I have exact same issue. It’s irritating
