Another team had difficulty getting a post filled so I was approached to apply

Just realised it's been advertised externally.

Aibu in thinking they don't want me

You're probably not a shoe-in but you wouldn't have been approached if they didn't want you. They'll want to benchmark you against external, it's not a dead cert but you have an advantage in that you're a known quantity.

Thanks. Oh darn it

It could just be that they think they need a proper shortlist tointerview and the only way to get one is to advertise externally. You could justifiably speak to the advertised contact to ask what has happened to your application.

ChurpyBurd · 27/03/2026 18:40

I was encouraged to apply for a job that went external & got it.

There may not be enough internal candidates?

You just need to be the best, it doesn't really matter who the competition are.

Good luck!

Thank you.

They have lots of internal only job so I dunno.

I created a job and had to compete with external candidates. I got it but realised that being a shoe- in would have undermined my authority before I'd even started.

SoSoLong · 27/03/2026 18:44

But have you actually applied, it's not clear? We advertise internally, if no applications within 2 weeks we advertise externally.

Most recently, a promotion was advertised externally, I'd been encouraged to apply, but in the end they didn't even short list my application amongst much management speak of the strength of the candidates etc, so I then went and applied for a different secondment in a different team and got it. Sometimes when you don't get what seems a sure thing you just use it to move on x

Oh crazy. Was it the hiring manager telling you to apply?

Yep, I even had 3 meetings with the hiring manager only for her to categorise me on the shortlisting as not having experience I very obviously did have (on my CV so she couldn't even claim that it wasn't ) I've met the new person and she proceeded to tell us all about her close friendship with one of the interview panel and another senior manager, so I'm glad I found something else!!!!
