To eat 2 week out of date cottage cheese

Just went to open my tub of cottage cheese (all things cottage cheese brand if you haven’t tried it - it’s delicious!) - but just realised it’s two weeks out of date (previously unopened). I want to still eat it for dinner but husband nervous - what do you think? Still looks / smells normal I think, although now I’m doubting myself! It was expensive so don’t really want to waste it xx

I wouldn’t. It’s pointless asking on here though because it could be raw chicken, 3 weeks past its use by date, stinking of rotten meat and people would still tell you to eat it. This might be fine but you can’t trust mumsnet, the women here will eat literally anything

DustyMaiden · 26/03/2026 20:11

I don’t think it’s worth the risk. Do you want to be ill?

NoArmaniNoPunani · 26/03/2026 20:12

Won't the smell tell you the answer?

Spinningnewbie · 26/03/2026 20:12

Two weeks, not a chance.

Dartmoorcheffy · 26/03/2026 20:12

If its not been opened then yes it will be absolutely fine.

Ive always been a Longley farm full fat person and never found another cottage cheese that came close but waitrose have started selling one called dairly and its just as good.

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 26/03/2026 20:13

Well isn't cottage cheese basically gone off milk ?

suki1964 · 26/03/2026 20:14

If the top hadn't blown, to be fair I would

Im eating yoghurt a month out of date at the moment - its fine

But I have a cast iron stomach

It really won't be fine.

susiedaisy1912 · 26/03/2026 20:14

Eat it and let us know how it goes 😁

Ukholidaysaregreat · 26/03/2026 20:15

Delicious. If the first mouthful is fizzy, spit it out and don't eat the rest. Good luck.

Yes same! This is the best one I’ve found other than longley farm - will try the Waitrose one next (if I survive this one)

And it's cheaper in Lidl - about 60p IIRC , and it's delicious and I have converted cottage cheese haters. Its also sold under other names , its made in Poland and they sell it under a lot of different banding's

Spinningnewbie · 26/03/2026 20:17

Just googled. It will be a Listeria haven! Cottage cheese is v dodgy when out of date.

dairyfarmerswife · 26/03/2026 20:18

I would! We are currently eating greek yogurt that was out of date on the 14th Feb 🙈 As long as it's not mouldy or a funny colour it's usually fine

Ooh thats handy to know. I will look out for it x

AppropriateAdult · 26/03/2026 20:19

Cheese lasts for ages past its date (as does yoghurt). With dairy, if it’s off it’ll taste off - you'll
know from the first bite.

shiverm · 26/03/2026 20:20

@ToKittyornottoKitty 🤣

@namechangeformeeee two days? Sure if not pregnant or poorly. Two weeks?? So not worth the risk. Maybe if it was the end of the world, but even then.

ananasfritz · 26/03/2026 20:20

Is the date a "use by"/expiry date, or a "best before" date? If expiry I wouldn't risk it from a safety perspective. If best before it may be perfectly safe (but possibly not as good as when fully fresh) assuming it's been consistently refrigerated, seal intact and no visible expansion on tub, and looks/smells/feels normal. I understand your husband not wanting to risk it, though.

Dartmoorcheffy · 26/03/2026 20:21

The risk of listeria is very low. If its not been opened you will be fine.

Givethemacall · 26/03/2026 20:23

If you enjoy food poisoning - go ahead and eat ! Take the risk !

personally - I wouldn’t - life is to short to eat 2 week out of date cottage cheese.

Spinningnewbie · 26/03/2026 20:23

@Dartmoorcheffy who the hell would risk Listeria even a small chance.
Utter stupidity.

Even the screenshot you posted shows it may not be fine as it’s at the end of its max past the expiry date

redhit · 26/03/2026 20:26

Satarn · 26/03/2026 20:28

I dont mind eating something a few days out of date, but not weeks.
