To eat 2 week out of date cottage cheese

Just went to open my tub of cottage cheese (all things cottage cheese brand if you haven’t tried it - it’s delicious!) - but just realised it’s two weeks out of date (previously unopened). I want to still eat it for dinner but husband nervous - what do you think? Still looks / smells normal I think, although now I’m doubting myself! It was expensive so don’t really want to waste it xx

If it's not fizzy it's fine

Wickedlittledancer · 26/03/2026 20:54

That’s really gross.

NFPorterkeeponkeepingonNsoul · 26/03/2026 21:01

For the sake of a couple of quid ..why chance it

FluffyMcFluffFace · 26/03/2026 21:04

I am currently eating Lidl cottage cheese that's about a week out of date, and it's already open 😬. I would eat it if it smells OK and the lid wasn't blown. You'll be able to tell in the first mouthful and can spit it out if it doesn't taste right.

namechangeformeeee · 27/03/2026 20:34

I ate it - all fine!

Typical mumsnetter 😅

Although food poising takes 1-3 days to kick
in so don’t count your chickens just yet

It really won't be fine.

It really will. I buy it in bulk from the farm or Booths and its often 2-3 weeks out of date when its finished. Never found it off or been ill.

TappyGilmore · 27/03/2026 21:06

I would, if it’s not been opened and it’s been in your fridge the whole time. It will be fine.

And if it isn’t fine, you’ll be able to tell as soon as you open it so obviously then you might decide not to go ahead. But it’s not like it’s possible for it to make you sick if it looks and smells perfect.

Edit to add - sorry didn’t read before posting that you’d already eaten it! Glad you’re fine!

GrandmaMazur · 27/03/2026 21:21

Oh no. I wouldn’t eat it (I know you already have). I had the worst food poisoning of my life from a cottage cheese sandwich and haven’t been able to eat it since!

IlovePhilMitchell · 27/03/2026 21:25

I did exactly this over a week ago and here I am alive and kicking, living the dream. 🤣

BauhausOfEliott · 28/03/2026 12:32

I never even look at the Best Before dates on yogurt, cottage cheese etc.

suki1964 · 29/03/2026 00:09

Im loving the pearl clutching regarding listeria

Listeria has to be introduced at production

Hence all the recalls on cheeses, deli meats , it has to be introduced then

If the tub hasn't blown, it was bought and refrigerated as soon as possible , its fine

Cottage cheese is heated milk and and acid - vinegar, lemon , I make my own. Milk is heated , cooled and either a bacteria ( yoghurt ) or an accid is introduced

I make my yogurt over night, then strain it the following day whilst at work - so its warm for around 30 hours. It lasts 2 weeks at least if its not eaten before then

NotThisShitAgain121 · 26/04/2026 20:41

2 weeks past I would not. Not with dairy lash and learn.

Pretty sure the OP either ate it a month ago and survived... Or ...

AliTheMinx · 26/04/2026 20:45

My colleague regularly eats cottage cheese that's 2-3 months out of date without issue... although she does have a stomach of steel!

This is an old thread. Yes I would eat it. Ive eaten cream very out of date if unopened it normally lasts ages. Clotted cream for example seems to be indestructible.

Ive just discovered that brand. Not as good as LF but quite near it.

thinktoomuchtoooften · 26/04/2026 20:48

It actually says on Arla cottage cheese that cc is often fine after its date and to rely on smell.

Loulou4022 · 26/04/2026 21:01

If it’s a use by date I definitely wouldn’t if it’s a best before date I personally still wouldn’t but I know hubs would and he’s been with yoghurts.

Bjorkdidit · 26/04/2026 21:15

Just checked the unopened big tub of LF cottage cheese with a use by date of 10 April - absolutely fine and I will probably eat it next week.

NotThisShitAgain121 · 27/04/2026 03:32

I am just giving my opinion on it thank you.

Where do you get big tubs from, our Morrisons and Waitrose only have the little tubs? Thanks.

Bjorkdidit · 27/04/2026 07:12

Booths or direct from Longley Farm itself. Around £2.50 for 450 g so a bit cheaper per 100 g. I live fairly close and do a click and collect while hiking in the area to justify the petrol cost.

likelysuspect · 27/04/2026 07:15

How the other half live eh?

Cant even get LF any more down here, used to get it in Home Bargains and now they only stock 'Grahams' - spits on floor
