Election candidate runs on main policy of Gaza!

SSAW2026 · 26/03/2026 17:35

There are so many problems that need fixing in Birmingham and in the UK, yet Independent candidate runs on 'Gaza' as his main point. The candidate was also recently arrested for racism against a police officer, so the news report just said.

AIBU to think sort out the UK first, surely enough to do here.

There are some of those independent MPs who only use parliamentary time to ask questions about Gaza.

I suppose it's even more ridiculous if they're wannabe councillors though.

I really don't know why we don't just reduce the number of politicians we have in this country - MPs, mayors, councillors and so on - we have far too many. Surely we'd all be happy if reduced them by about 60 or 70%?

Waheymum · 26/03/2026 18:04

Gaza is not a council issue.

Sparron · 26/03/2026 18:35

Get used to sectarian/religious/tribal voting in this country. It will only increase.

ColdAsAWitches · 26/03/2026 18:54

He's an independent. He can run on any issues he wants. The voters either agree or disagree with him and vote accordingly. Sometimes single-issues are considered important, usually they are not. That how the system works.

HermioneWeasley · 26/03/2026 18:57

Let’s not pretend it has always been the case in the UK that political candidates have stood on a single issue platform that is nothing to do with the UK.

it’s a worrying development

It does feel wrong.

Surely there are things that need attention in Birmingham, or is it all tickety boo, and so lots of spare time and money to focus on a place thousands of miles away.

That doesn't sound great.

We have the lowest representatives per head in Europe.

Pollqueen · 26/03/2026 21:29

Didn't Birmingham City Council declare bankruptcy in 2023? I think they have bigger issues to focus on but UK politics is getting more tribal so 🤷

JimJamming · 26/03/2026 21:33

We had the same Labour MP for donkey’s years & he was pretty ineffective, so we’re not noticing much of a difference to be honest

*edit to clarify I’ve realised although the MP in my constituency ran on the ‘Gaza ticket’, he’s actually more effective than the previous incumbent and isn’t the one charged by police

He will find out what people prioritise when no-one votes for him.

Kendodd · 26/03/2026 21:40

Does he really have nothing to say about the bins or the potholes?

I am sure Gaza will be more important than issues closer to home for some voters.

Presumably this is the council election? If people think Gaza is important, they will vote for him. If not, they won't. Who stands is nothing to do with the existing council

In a democracy, voters are allowed to choose how to spend their votes.

Look at Lib Dem council results during the build up to the Iraq war - many votes cast then were nothing to do with bins and potholes.

Skinnysaluki · 27/03/2026 06:49

People can stand on the platform they like and people can vote or not vote for them. That’s how it works.
As for all the posters so far who are simply Islamophobes dressing it up as ‘concern’- you can vote Reform, who also have very little to say about potholes and bins

FourSevenThree · 27/03/2026 06:50

I suppose anyone who gets the office will have to deal with bins and potholes, so there is little space for differentiation there. The candidate tells you about their worldview and values which they would apply in the office.

I wouldn't vote for them. I don't like posers who are so full on about Gaza that they ignore Sudan.

In the end, it's marketing ploy - the question is whether they know whether the goal is to use Gaza to get the office, or to use visibility of the office run to get audience for Gaza.

We have the lowest representatives per head in Europe.

The three countries in Europe with the lowest representatives per head are actually Ireland, Slovakia and Finland.

A councillor in the UK will have zero power over Gaza. All they can do is fix things like potholes.

That’s not why people stand on Single Issue Tickets - they do it to use the publicity of an election to bring focus to the issue they are interested in.

There are loads of single issue candidates all over, so not sure why this one has drawn attention.

You could easily accuse Reform of being “single issue”, the issue of immigration.

..and yes, if they get elected and find themselves having to do the actual day to day work of running a council, they are often bob-useless (see Reform led councils)

Both the candidate and the voters understand this.

It's about making a point.

Voters are allowed to choose to make any point they like in any election.

It's performative.

Hopefully they will reserve efforts to improve the local community rather than spend time on things they cannot change. Maybe, ggey don't realise the war in Gaza is over.

Don't mention Sudan. Muslims killing Muslims doesn't attract the same concerns.
