What’s wrong with me, hospital clueless

elm26 · 26/03/2026 15:24

Yesterday at 1pm, I put my 6 month old on the rug with his toys and went for a wee.

As I was walking back I had a sudden severe pain in my right side radiating into my lower back and up to my shoulder, I was in agony.

I called DH who was luckily only on a job 15 mins away, he came straight home and took one look at me and called ambulance, I was shouting out in pain they gave me gas and air and morphine.

I had an emergency CT when dye last night and also have a catheter as lost the ability to wee. Nothing showed on CT, they got me settled on morphine and today I’ve had a transvaginal scan which shows ovaries and womb look normal.

Gynae can’t find a reason so they’ve stopped painkillers and just giving me paracetamol but somethings wrong I feel like somebody’s twisting my insides. The gynae consultant was horrible and said the surgical team will come see me if they think it’s worth it?? So I’m waiting for that if they come.

I’m in so much pain and genuinely scared they’ll send me home not knowing what is wrong with me.

Has anyone has anything similar?

I had something very similar last year. The pain was unreal. I was crying my eyes out and bent over anything. Going on all fours to see if that would help the pain. Then I couldn’t pee but felt like a needed to. I was heavily pregnant at the time too. After 3 trips to maternity triage, they diagnosed me with a kidney stone. By the time I got an ultrasound, I had passed the stone but they could see the damage. Does the pain feel like it’s starting to move round from the back?

WeightLossGoal2024 · 26/03/2026 23:21

siunds like agony. I hope it is fixed quickly

SpringIsHere2026 · 26/03/2026 23:28

Have they done CRP blood test to look for infection?

Could be cholecystitis or perhaps pancreatitis?

Whatifitallgoesright · 26/03/2026 23:49

Sounds like gallstones. I had gallstones blocking my bile duct and it developed into Pancreatitis. Had a stent put in and 6 days in hospital. Pain was excruciating. Like labour.

Hibernating17 · 27/03/2026 00:09

I had something similar. Sudden intense pain. Called an ambulance. No infection found ɓut when in A&E my legs couldn't hold me up and I was unable to pee, although pain subsided Stupid doctor tried to tell me it was a tummy upset and sent me home. I saw my GP who thought - probably correctly- that it was a trapped nerve. It got better over a few days but there was a numbness in part of my leg for some time ( couldn't fell touch or temperature). Never happened again.

This was me last week. Kidney stone lodged in my urethra blocking my kidney and became infected. Never felt pain like it and came on so suddenly. I had a stent fitted and iv antibiotics. But nothing touched the pain, codeine, morphine nothing and I was being sick too. Definitely ask them to check
for stones x

Honestly, the worst pain I've ever had was a kidney stone blocking my urethra. Ended up with lithotripsy to break it up. I was never so glad as to see gravel in my wee!
(I've not had kids/severe gynae pain, but I've had a couple of spinal surgeries and a knee replacement: the first few hours of kidney stones beat them all.) Good luck, OP

ChangePrivacyQuestion · 27/03/2026 00:21

Pain worse than childbirth and unable to wee - that's a kidney stone waving flags in their faces.

Kick up a fuss and get PALS on board. You'd never be treated like this if you were a man writhing in pain and unable to wee. This is outrageous.

Gallbladder?

Pumpkinmagic · 27/03/2026 00:56

Sounds just like when I had gallstones. Came on suddenly. I had vomiting and diarrhoea daily after eating. I suspected gallstones, G.P agreed, referred me to a Gastroenterologist. several A&E visits (one via ambulance) kept getting fobbed off at A&E and told I must have IBS. Given an urgent referral from A&E to a Gastroenterologist, he suspected gallstones, I then had daily bloods, an u/s and MRI. The U/S and MRI were all clear. Then had an ERCP camera procedure which confirmed hundreds of grit like gallstones. Symptoms then went away on their own (after around 5 weeks of daily episodes). Still had keyhole surgery to remove gallbladder some time later (recovery was easy compared to the pain of the stones). Hope you get a diagnosis and are soon feeling much better.

BinNightTonight · 27/03/2026 07:01

The randomness of it, diarrhea, being sick, intense awful pain that takes your breath away immediately makes me think of gallstones. Gallbladder issues can start after pregnancy (mine did too) which again would make sense. Its the most horrific pain I've ever experienced, not sure what I'd choose between another episode or an unmedicated birth. Really hope you get sorted today.

ExplodingCarrots · 27/03/2026 08:27

This definitely sounds like gallstones . My first ever attack sounds like yours . I was rolling around in agony begging for help. At A&E the dr basically fobbed me off and said it was heartburn / indigestion . I was absolutely mortified because I thought I had been rolling around in agony because of heartburn . I had attacks for years and thought oh my stomach is playing up again and suffered at home . 2 years ago I had the worst attack yet and thought I can’t do this anymore so had a private appointment and lo and behold it was massive gallstones and the latest attack had damaged my bile duct from a massive stone . So I suffered unnecessarily for years. Don’t be fobbed off . Don’t let them send you home . Most of the people I know who’ve had their gallbladders out were always fobbed off at the beginning with IBS , heartburn , gastroenteritis, anxiety etc . I had an ultrasound and MRI to diagnose mine . I hope you feel better soon.

Ive just spent a lot of time with my mum on hospital. Lots of posters up about Martha’s law. Maybe fire that in to get a 2nd opinion..

user1492757084 · 27/03/2026 08:52

My brother had something similar and it was kidney stones.
Gall bladder attack?
Glad they are investigating properly.

elm26 · 27/03/2026 08:52

I’m not very good at advocating for myself I just kind of shut down and do what they say as they are the medical professionals but I feel really strongly that something is not okay with me. Now the pain is under my ribs and central to right and into my back and it goes between sharp to dull to achy. I still haven’t seen a pain management team or even a surgical team. Only a gynae team yesterday who told me it’s nothing gynae and she doubts the surgical team will even want to see me because I’m not rolling around screaming in pain anymore. I’ve been dosed up to the eyeballs on morphine overnight but I’m not sure how to word it/stand my ground if they try and discharge me. I’ve still got catheter in place.

Make a fuss (politely!). It will be ward rounds soon so explain everything clearly and ask why it’s not gallbladder/kidney stones/anything else….

ShredderQueen · 27/03/2026 08:59

Write it down.
And be prepared tonask "would you treat me this way if I were a man?"

TheAmusedLimePanda · 27/03/2026 09:04

Definitely sounds like kidney stones. The pain is referred to as renal colic. Check it out and see if it matches what you have.

Wow, this is so similar to my experience. I had my first attack when I was pregnant then my second one weeks after birth. I got three different diagnoses from OOH, 111 and walk in, indigestion, gastroenteritis and gastritis. I remember talking to a doctor in A&E saying that I'd had a completely unmedicated birth two weeks prior and this was similar pain levels and she just did a little laugh. I wasn't given any painkillers at all. It really ruined the newborn time for me, the pain and the anxiety, it all came to a head when I eventually was admitted to hospital urgently with pancreatitis and jaundice and had my gallbladder removed weeks later. I'm sorry you had a similar experience, absolutely awful.

ExplodingCarrots · 27/03/2026 09:08

The pain under the right rib and radiating to the back is textbook gallbladder attack pain . Honestly , tell them to check for gallstones . The pain does subside but once you got stones that’s it, there’s only a matter of time before another attack.

I completely understand, I also hate advocating for myself, but you really, really need to. Clearly there is something going on, gallstones, kidney stones. During ward round say how much pain you have been in and still are in, mention the amount and strength of painkillers you've taken etc.

ExplodingCarrots · 27/03/2026 09:12

@BinNightTonightIm sorry you had to experience that pain too and newly post partum as well . I was so cross I suffered for 6 years and it took me going private to be listened to.

Createausername1970 · 27/03/2026 09:12

Start rolling around in pain and make it very vocally clear how you are feeling.

PinkyFlamingo · 27/03/2026 09:18

This is awful you are being made to feel the way you do at the same time worrying about what is actually wrong. If it's gallstones they probably will discharge you and put you on the surgical list this happened to my DH, if it hadn't been the weekend he would have been operated on as an emergency but by the time he seen the Doctors the next day the pain had settled down and it wasn't classed as an emergency anymore

USaYwHatNow · 27/03/2026 09:26

My friend had exactly similar pain and I thought she might be having a heart attack or a gallstone attack. Turns out it was pancreatitis and gallstones and they took her gallbladder out. Was also tricky to see on scan. Don't be fobbed off. She also needed oramorph for the pain. Don't let them send you home until you get a diagnosis. I work for the NHS but even I'm getting sick of the way people are being treated at the moment.

MyDeftDuck · 27/03/2026 09:32

Sounds like kidney stones……they’re extremely painful .
Hope you get some answers soon and the right treatment OP 💐
