What’s wrong with me, hospital clueless

elm26 · 26/03/2026 15:24

Yesterday at 1pm, I put my 6 month old on the rug with his toys and went for a wee.

As I was walking back I had a sudden severe pain in my right side radiating into my lower back and up to my shoulder, I was in agony.

I called DH who was luckily only on a job 15 mins away, he came straight home and took one look at me and called ambulance, I was shouting out in pain they gave me gas and air and morphine.

I had an emergency CT when dye last night and also have a catheter as lost the ability to wee. Nothing showed on CT, they got me settled on morphine and today I’ve had a transvaginal scan which shows ovaries and womb look normal.

Gynae can’t find a reason so they’ve stopped painkillers and just giving me paracetamol but somethings wrong I feel like somebody’s twisting my insides. The gynae consultant was horrible and said the surgical team will come see me if they think it’s worth it?? So I’m waiting for that if they come.

I’m in so much pain and genuinely scared they’ll send me home not knowing what is wrong with me.

Has anyone has anything similar?

Why is everyone recommending this now? AI makes mistakes a lot as it wants to please you/keep you talking. People not feeling well might not think to mention certain medications or relevant history.

depends on how you word the prompts and you can tell it to cover a wide range of sites and sources to get the best match etc

Whosthetabbynow · 27/03/2026 13:01

Were you ok before you sat on the loo OP? Honestly, your back can go into unbearably painful spasms if you’ve moved the wrong way at all. My lower back did once after I shook up the duvet. All it takes is just to move in the wrong way. I’m not being flippant btw and the not being able to wee could be pressure on a nerve 💐

Ohthatsabitshit · 27/03/2026 13:05

I think you go home and return if the pain returns. There’s nothing they can do really.

> lost the ability to wee

That is the most concerning thing
It sounds like cauda equina syndrome needs to be eliminated as a cause by having an MRI
If you are unable to pee for 48 hours you need to emphasise this to whoever is looking after you

I walked from the loo to the living room and siddeny this searing, sharp awful pain hit I thought I was going to collapse but needed to get to sofa where my phone was as my baby was rug with some toys I thought I was going to pass out from pain. It happened randomly as I was walking.

It's absolutely kidney stones. I've been there.

There may be blood in your urine they can pick up with dip stick + scan.

CatNoBag · 27/03/2026 13:12

elm26 · 27/03/2026 12:50

This is interesting but I can barely get them to talk about anything other than contraception so god knows who’s going to be open to that possibility.

I had this - my symptoms were similar to a urine infection and I had a fever (freezing cold rather than hot) a few times. This was on my right hand side, I had everything removed from that side and was ok for a bit but then I had similar issues on the left (not affecting my ureter the second time, but with adhesions to my bowel) and had to go back and have that side done too. If your ureter is getting blocked, your kidney will be in distress. Mine had shrunk a fair bit as it took a while for the symptoms to effect me badly and then it took a while to get it fixed due to my life being a bit complicated at the time. Sooner the better is best, otherwise your kidney will stop working completely.

elm26 · 27/03/2026 13:13

Urine dip came back normal. At this point I’m
sure they think I’m making it up, they are making me feel like a nuisance. All I want to do is get whatever is wrong sorted and go home to my babies 😢

The OP is on constant pain unless she takes morphine, how can she go home?

Newlittlerescue · 27/03/2026 13:14

Bladder stone? You did a wee, that dislodged a bladder stone, such that you were struck with the sudden pain when walking back to your baby.

Nosejobnelly · 27/03/2026 13:17

Keep advocating for yourself, OP. It’s not normal to be in that much pain & not be able to wee.
I saw what my late MIL went through last year in hospital before she died (she was very elderly) and it’s a complete shit show.
keep pushing for the kidney scan - why won’t they scan them? It’s just an ultrasound surely?

Aluna · 27/03/2026 13:27

elm26 · 27/03/2026 11:55

No they removed my catheter and I can’t wee as of yet

We’ll don’t go home until they’ve figured out the cause of the urinary retention.

It could so easily be a stone. Although I couldn’t pee when I had appendicitis.

If there is a stone & the urine can’t pass it can back up into the kidneys and damage it.

damelza · 27/03/2026 13:32

Have they mentioned doing an ultrasound to see if you are retaining urine? It's very simple, takes seconds, can be done by your bed, and can identify this. At least it would be one thing checked for you.

Natsku · 27/03/2026 13:32

I can't believe they're refusing to scan your kidneys when you have severe pain and issues with urination! That is so bad, I would be asking for a second opinion. Your description of the pain sounds just like the pain I had when I had hydronephrosis (swollen kidney because ureter was blocked. Though in my case it wasn't caused by kidney stones, but by unborn DD pressing on the ureter!)

Spookyspaghetti · 27/03/2026 13:38

OhBotherSaidPoo · 26/03/2026 15:27

Gosh how scary.

Have you tried running your symptoms through AI as a starter for 10.

Don’t do this. Try to only Google reputable sites like the NHS.

AreYouAGod · 27/03/2026 13:40

Google Martha’s Law. Plus I hate to say it, but once your husband is there you may find them more responsive… 🙄

My gallbladder pain was the worst pain I have ever been in and they can’t always spot it with just an ultrasound. Was the scan done by radiography or gynaecologist? Do they know what to look for? A&E missed mine on an ultrasound twice.

FYI If you aren’t peeing they can’t let you go.

And if you are in pain, please ask for morphine. I hope you get better care going forward.

I think op was in extreme pain last night and had morphine to cope but is obviously not rolling around in pain now as she can type. She can be sent home with pain meds. Certainly that’s what happens in my hospital with kidney stones.

HollaHolla · 27/03/2026 13:45

The pain coming on right after a wee, would also give a nod to kidney stones. All three times I've had them, it was after a wee. It's because passing urine can move the stone from high up (no pain) in your kidney, to cause a blockage (kill me now, thank you.)

andthat · 27/03/2026 14:06

elm26 · 26/03/2026 16:07

They haven’t entertained anything to do with my gallbladder or kidneys even though I have diarrhoea after every evening meal. I cannot wee and feel like somethings twisting.

Not pregnant, have a 6 month old and finished period 2 days ago, I’m also on contraception. They did dip a pregnancy test as far as I’m aware.

push for a gallbladder/kidney bladder scan. I had this exact experience and had gallstones. Was in agony. The pain radiating to the shoulder is a big indicator of that...

And the minor issue of her not being able to pee?

hedgebets2 · 27/03/2026 14:09

Have they looked at your back? Cauda equina ruled out?

Iloveeverycat · 27/03/2026 14:14

I would have said pancreatitis due to gallstones that's what it was when I had a pain like that. But I thought they would show up on scan.

elm26 · 27/03/2026 14:14

They won’t scan my kidneys because I had a CT with dye last night and they couldn’t see anything. I am still on morphine and codeine alternating.

Rediculous.
You can type so fuckoff home to a 6 month old?

elm26 · 27/03/2026 14:15

They also said my bloods would have showed kidney abnormalities
