What’s wrong with me, hospital clueless

elm26 · 26/03/2026 15:24

Yesterday at 1pm, I put my 6 month old on the rug with his toys and went for a wee.

As I was walking back I had a sudden severe pain in my right side radiating into my lower back and up to my shoulder, I was in agony.

I called DH who was luckily only on a job 15 mins away, he came straight home and took one look at me and called ambulance, I was shouting out in pain they gave me gas and air and morphine.

I had an emergency CT when dye last night and also have a catheter as lost the ability to wee. Nothing showed on CT, they got me settled on morphine and today I’ve had a transvaginal scan which shows ovaries and womb look normal.

Gynae can’t find a reason so they’ve stopped painkillers and just giving me paracetamol but somethings wrong I feel like somebody’s twisting my insides. The gynae consultant was horrible and said the surgical team will come see me if they think it’s worth it?? So I’m waiting for that if they come.

I’m in so much pain and genuinely scared they’ll send me home not knowing what is wrong with me.

Has anyone has anything similar?

That may all be so, but it seems a great poty that findings and plan are not being clearly shared with the op. As.so often, it's about communication and in my experience patient /carers questions are papered over and not clearly answered until the patient or carer is very firm and digs in their heels. Too often in hospitals every person on shift has a different version of the "facts" or what next.

Which findings haven’t been shared? I’m sure I read that OP said CT scan, USS pelvis and USS liver/gallbladder were normal as were urine dips and bloods (though granted OP has shared with us which bloods were checked, and that’s absolutely fine!). I also read the plan is for surgeons to see her today. What hasn’t been communicated?

I don't know why on earth Doctors have 10 to 16 years of training to fully qualify when there are such available experts for free on Mumsnet Hmm

elm26 · 28/03/2026 10:03

They’re sending me home. Surgical team refusing to see me even though I’ve been promised for the last 3 days they’ll come and review. I’ve asked for it to be noted on my notes that they’ve refused. They don’t know what’s wrong with me, said the scans would have shown any kidney stones, gallstones, pancreas issues, bladder issues but they can’t find anything. Referred me back to gynae for a new type of contraceptive pill for those with endo. Still don’t know what that’s got to do with anything. Discharging me with paracetamol even though I’ve needed oramorph 3 times since 10pm last night. I’ve given up. I’m so fed up. In pain. She said if I get another “attack” like I did, to go to A&E and not to ring an ambulance unless life threatening.

Don't leave. Get a family member to speak to the ward manager and invoke Martha's rule. There should be a phone number for them to call and an independent review has to be done.

Smittenkitchen · 28/03/2026 13:09

So sorry. Sounds like you might need surgery to see if it's endo adhesions.

Flipflopflipflapper · 28/03/2026 17:00

Could is be MSK origin op? Trapped nerve in the middle back referring around the rib cage? Does the pain feel nervy?

Randmsdad · 28/03/2026 18:02

cauda equina syndrome?

do you have numbness where you would sit on a saddle?

How would you know if it was life threatening, they don't even know what it is, so they can't even say that. Do you have any other hospitals near by? Just if you go home and obviously its not going to go away, I wouldnt fancy going back to that hospital after being treated that way. I hope you find out what is going on soon

Solibear · 28/03/2026 18:12

Probably sounds like a weird suggestion but could it be severe trapped wind? After my second c-section I also had excruciating back and shoulder pain, as did the woman in the bed next to me, and that’s what it was in both cases! Appreciate you’re 6 months pp so not exactly the same scenario, but it could be something similar? Drinking a lot of peppermint tea helped me to relieve it

ChicPeer · 28/03/2026 18:18

It can be trapped nerve hun. It can be painful and explain radiation and twisting feeling. Doctors can be clueless sometimes. I would ask for a blood test to see if your calcium levels are low. Muscles do struggle to react if your calcium levels are low and as a result trapped nerves.

Could be kidney stone, worst pain ever. Peoole pass out front it. Ask for an ultrasound, this would also pick up other potential causes. You couldn't possibly be pregnant could you? I know you said you have a 6 month old, but it is possible (have they ruled out ectopic). Hope you get to the bottom of it.

AliTheMinx · 28/03/2026 18:21

Sorry. I haven't RTFT, but I immediately thought kidney stone. Absolutely excruciating pain. Really hope you get some answers soon x

BeAzureRaven · 28/03/2026 18:23

Did they check for kidney stones?

ThatBusyRedWriter · 28/03/2026 18:24

Not had similar but do not go home! Stand your ground. I had meningitis a few months ago, went to A&E and told multiple people o think it might be meningitis….doctor tried to send me home saying it was anxiety and stress. I am a nurse aswell, which I told them and they still didn’t consider what I was telling them

MyObservations · 28/03/2026 18:27

Sorry to hear about your pain. It's difficult to know what to say other than I wouldn't pay too much attention to the "mum's net college of medicine" diagnoses. The doctor's will have done their best to find out what the problem is and you can always ask for a second opinion. There will be various consultants on duty or standby. Bon courage

Climbinghigher · 28/03/2026 18:32

appalling that you are being sent home still in such pain and with no diagnosis. I would get in contact with PALS to complain and if you need to call an ambulance again do. How the hell would you know whether it was life threatening.

BeAzureRaven · 28/03/2026 18:34

Also: At age 42 I had a history of random sudden pain (often associated with coffee or wine, but not always) in upper abdomen, radiating to centre of back. This had been happening for roughly 10 years. I had cat scans, lab work, etc nothing showed anything. Finally, I told my GP that I was pretty sure it was my gallbladder (I'm an RN and even though I am dark haired and normal weight--so not the 'fat, fair and 40' I knew that my symptoms most closely matched gallbladder disease). She ridiculed me saying 'we've tested for that, and you are wrong.' I saw another doctor and insisted on more tests (This was really getting old after 10 years). Finally, I had a HIDA scan (radioactive) done, and guess what? My gallbladder was literally rotting. Had it removed and problem solved.

So they do this to nurses too? Which area do you work in? Is it because you’re not an and e nurse or something that made them dismiss your nursing experience? Like I’m just trying to understand why this is happening everywhere?! I’ve had an awful time with this lately and I’m so sick of it.

You have more confidence in medics than me. It took 5 years of arguing, complaints, genuinely making a nuisance of myself and repeated visits to ED before they would even start to look at what might be going on with my learning disabled son.

The NHS works well if there is a clear pathway or protocol for what is going on. If there isn’t good luck.

Pearmain · 28/03/2026 18:40

Discitis?

ArtfulJadeBee · 28/03/2026 18:41

Kidney stones or appendicitis? Check WBC count and if high, consider uti or kidney infection. Ovarian torsion another possibility

Haven’t RTFT but blood clots stick out immediately - I had shoulder tip radiating pain and had multiple blood clots in my lungs. Please ask if they’ve done a D-Dimer (blood test). Mine were small and missed on CT but caught on VQ scan.

Doobi999 · 28/03/2026 18:53

This may sound daft. But I know from personal experience that liver problems can cause pain in the shoulder..I've had three liver biopsies and always been warned this before. I don't know if your liver is also creating the gut pains. Like I said..maybe daft.
