Pubs making the decision to ban children

Depends if there have been loads of issues and many pubs will listen to regulars . I think the balance is after 7.30pm say NO. I would put a polite notice up saying that hot food is being carried so kindly keep your kids at your table - beer gardens are obviously subject to weather . If a play area is there then expect kids.
We have an awful issue with too many dogs though in local pubs . There is a dog friendly inner area too which when the pub gets crowded is annoying .Dogs sitting on seats . Loads of water bowls around the pub and I wouldn't eat there so they have lost my adult families £70 bill.

MayaPinion · 29/03/2026 10:04

Financially, it makes far more sense to allow families - they’re paying for 4 meals instead of 2 (even if two of them are chicken nuggets), though my kids were having adult meals by 7 or 8 even if they didn’t eat everything on the plate). Families also don’t tend to stay as long. They tend to eat and go rather than lingering over their drinks, so they free up tables quicker. There are issues with kids sunning around, playing or watching screens with the volume up (my personal bugbear) but those kids need to be managed by parents and/or staff, not a blanket ban on everyone. It would also help to have pubs loosely segregated so that there’s a family friendly section at one end and an adult only section at the other. My local does this - families with children are seated in the ‘restaurant’ section while adults can also sit in the large bar area. If pubs don’t serve food I don’t see any reason for kids to be there at all.

There should be pubs that are for families (and dogs) and pubs that are for adults only (and no dogs) and should be clear demarcation between the two.

So?

Go and find them.

RudolphTheReindeer · 29/03/2026 14:22

I think it's entirely up to the owner. No one complains about adult only holiday resorts. If a pub doesn't accept children and you have kids you just go to another.

did anyone mention this pub did also ban dogs after a certain time? (I'm assuming it's the same pub I read about the other day haven't clicked the click)

Umm…Children can have dog allergies (my three all do) and lots of adults have dogs but not children.
Why are you grouping children and dogs together like that?

Because many adults want to go to a pub and not be bothered by either dogs or children.

Anyway it would get too complicated to group dogs into a separate third category.

There would have to be pubs for:

Adults, children and dogs.
Adults, children but no dogs
Adults, dogs but no children.
Adults only.

Bluechuckle · 29/03/2026 15:01

Parents with children can also want no dogs you know.
And adults with dogs mightn’t want children in the pub either.
Life is complicated I’m afraid 😁

My favourite local bans kids. It is a proper ale pub. No food (apart from crisps, cheese & onion rolls, and pickled eggs). No wifi, no TVs.
No reason for any kid to be there at all.
Dogs are welcome though.

I’d much prefer a ban on dogs in pubs, I’d much rather children be welcome.

Bluechuckle · 29/03/2026 15:04

Yes, hate dogs in pubs/cafés too. Nothing against dogs, just not the place for them imho.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 29/03/2026 15:06

Ban both dogs and kids in pubs (not all obvs!) win win!

Certain countries including USA ban dogs in pubs/bars/cafes. Why are we in the UK so dog friendly? I heard Scotland bans (sort of) kids in pubs, does this also apply to dogs?!

You’d have to have a human to bring them in. I just remembered near me is a dog friendly cafe (in an old pub building), night times it turns into a bar, can’t recall if dogs allowed at night or not.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 29/03/2026 15:10

When I mean dog friendly it actively welcomes dogs, has a barrier there so they can be and do doggy things. Humans are also welcome.

Know your market. Wet led pubs really aren’t for kids so makes sense to be adult only, especially in the evenings, food orientated pubs probably need the families to balance the books but that said those visiting with children shouldn’t treat them as playgrounds - I saw a lovely example yesterday of great parenting, they brought ludo with them plus colouring books and sat playing and entertaining their dc in the pub, no screens, and dc (approx 5&7) were beautifully behaved, no pub minds them, it’s those that run around unchecked or have screens with the volume on that gets us riled and why our local (wet) bar bans dc throughout the summer (though turns a blind eye to older kids with locals, it’s a holiday area) the ban is due to people being knocked flying and prams blocking exits (tiny pub)

Dogs have been such big business from special dog ice cream to free biscuits and water bowls so that dog lovers can enjoy taking them everywhere . I don't dislike them but feel that I don't want to be eating near a strangers dog or sitting on a padded seat where a dog has been . One family took their pram into a local pub . I peered into it and found I was smiling at a dog.
We never thought of taking our dog into cafes and bars as a child as it just wasn't done .I think more need to speak out and walk out of venues . Many just keep quiet but if more spoke up and left without buying anything then there would be change.

It always sounds a bit command economy when people say what private businesses should be doing. What happens if all the pubs in a particular area want to admit adults and dogs but no children, for example? Or have kids and dogs but no adult only space at all?

The only answer, unless people are advocating very significant economic system change, is for owners to run their businesses however they like and people either spend money there or don't.

Melancholyflower · 29/03/2026 19:00

what are some of you wanting to do in pubs that you can't do with children there?

Most adults feel the need to moderate the subject matter of conversations/language when there are children around, which they don't in adult only environments.

Yes, but you shouldn't be speaking so loud that people at other tables can hear your conversations anyway.

So people without a family would be banned from the families and dogs pubs? I hope you don't mean that.
I would say some pubs for all and some adults only.

I have definitely decided to make my voice heard about not wanting to be near dogs in cafes, restaurants etc. I always ask for a table well away from any dogs present and I don’t want any dogs to be seated near me. I actually witnessed a family come into a restaurant with a dog and the only table left was next to another dog, the waiter actually went and asked the people sat down if their dog was okay sitting next to another dog and they said no so those people couldn’t be seated yet humans do not get asked and do not get respected!! The look I get from
waitimg staff when I ask politely!! the UK particularly has gone absolutely mad and it’s got way out of hand about dogs.

I'm not sure there is any "should" about it. Owners/landlords will take whatever decisions they feel work where they are. I live in a rural area which gets a a lot of visitors in the Summer and the main attraction is walking. A lot of walkers, both visitors and locals, have children and I'd say that even more have dogs. Any pub or cafe around here that banned them would be likely to go out of business pretty quickly. I am sure some people would prefer it but there wouldn't be enough of them to keep businesses viable - lots of places are struggling already as it is. Having neither young children or a dog I wouldn't personally care much either way but I do want local places to be open, and if that means they welcome families and dogs so be it. Other businesses in different places with a different type of clientele will probably make different decisions which is fair enough.
