To think car insurance prices are insane and it’s unfair?

WaterfallGlitter6 · 23/03/2026 18:39

I’ve had my license since I was 18 and I’m now 21 (22 next week). The insurance cost (£2,600 a year!!) for my Tiguan is insane even though I’ve never had an accident or claimed on my insurance at all. I understand that it’s higher because people my age are more likely to have accidents (I’ve never been involved in one and drive carefully) but for people who have never had to claim on their insurance and who drive carefully it’s unfair. I also understand it’s higher too because I have a Tiguan but I still think insurance prices are insanely high. AIBU to think car insurance prices are insane and it’s unfair?

Defo try the comparison sites. If you have just taken out a new policy you should be in a cooling off period so could take out a new policy and cancel current one. I used compare the market for my kids car insurance and they vary massively.

It isn't. It's the most deprived local authority in Lancashire with the lowest life expectancy in England.

Yeah I was joking. Point remains though. It’s not vehicle crime.

My insurance is with Churchill. The car is insurance group 21.

Have you used a comparison website? Pay annually if you can as monthly payments incur interest. Do you have another person as a named driver? That often brings the cost down as long as they have a clean licence with no points.

PrettyLies · 23/03/2026 22:53

I disagree too. I have a Land Rover FL2 (so much bigger than yours OP) and insurance is £700 a year. I’ve only been driving six years.

Soundofthesea · 23/03/2026 22:53

That’s cheap my 18 year old is paying £3900 for a 10 year old corsa

ACynicalDad · 23/03/2026 22:56

Get a telematics box, it proves that you drive well even if your profile says high risk. We had one 12 years ago and today I reinsured for £350 for the year. We live in London which is high risk, park on the street, but have a fairly old car and proved many years ago that we are low risk.

Ninerainbows · 23/03/2026 22:57

DallazMajor · 23/03/2026 22:48

It doesn't need to be! Higher crime rate areas are subject to higher rates of vandalism of general property and fraudulent claims. House insurance is high there too for the same reason.

Areas in the centre of Blackpool are double the national vehicle crime rate so it'll depend where the OP lives. There's also very little off-street parking due to HMOs and terraces without drives.

With a black box are there limits on when you can drive your car?

Some black box policies are more stringent than others. My son has one with QuoteMeHappy (part of Aviva) which had no curfews at all. It was £1700 for the year, just after passing his test. Smaller car though, smaller engine, insurance group 6 I think.

OonaStubbs · 23/03/2026 23:03

IMO the penalties for driving whilst uninsured should far more severe than they are.

Neveragain3 · 23/03/2026 23:08

As someone else has already stated, it's life-altering injuries that are by far the biggest cost incurred in car accidents. Even a Ferrari doesn't cost that much to repair. Young people are far more likely to have accidents that incur terrible injuries, either to themselves, their passengers, or the occupants of other cars, or pedestrians for that matter.

That’s not true. Total insurance payouts for car accidents is around £12bn per year. Less than £2.5bn is for personal injury, the rest is for vehicle damage.

As I stated, this is why premiums are so much higher nowadays. Personal injury claims are the same albeit rise with inflation, however the vehicle damage claims which constitute well over 2/3rds of the total cash value have risen dramatically as the average price of a car on the road is far higher than it used to be even accounting for inflation.

It’s a common misconception that young people at risk of causing catastrophic injuries to others are what drive up policy prices. It’s simply not true. It is young people driving more expensive cars and crashing into other more expensive cars and damaging them that is the primary reason for sky high policies.

Neveragain3 · 23/03/2026 23:13

LakieLady · 23/03/2026 20:09

A neighbour's son had a crash that left one of his passengers with brain damage, and two with broken bones.

The damages award for the brain damaged lad was millions.

That’s not why car insurance is high. Personal injury claims make up barely 20% of the value of all payouts.

TheTwenties · 23/03/2026 23:14

Go on the Autotrader website and look for any make or model 7 seaters if that’s what you need. Use filters to look for cars in insurance group under 10 and acceleration 8-10 & 10-12 seconds. Take out all cat N etc. see what models you’re left with and then get some insurance quotes on a few of them. DD’s insurance on a group 10 car came down from £2000 a year ago to just over £1000 recently. First year driving, there’s a telematics app but it’s not a restricted black box.

The children are 6 months, 18 months and 2 years old.

Oh my gosh. And you're so young, and looking after a baby and two toddlers on your own?

I hope you are getting all the help in the world from SS. And we all need to stop telling you to get something smaller @WaterfallGlitter6

There aren't any time limits on the policy we have for my daughter.

Definitely try a comparison site when your insurance comes up for renewal and it should show you black box options. You can then check if there are any conditions attached, but as I said, there are none with our policy.

TheKittenswithMittens · 23/03/2026 23:34

I was paying around 300 quid for a Porsche Boxter, but then I am old. Many young people don't bother with insurance, as someone said earlier, the fines aren't that high.

WaterfallGlitter6 · 24/03/2026 07:39

I’ll have another look at comparison websites and other insurance companies today. Is it worth me possibly looking at other cars too or just other polices for my current car?

Are you just about to renew or have you already started the policy? Or are you mid way through?

Ok great. I would take some time to read up on all the ways to get it as cheap as possible and really shop around. I’d say don’t rush into choosing a new vehicle. It’s not easy when you need three car seats like you do but it’s definitely worth looking into that when you can- narrow it down to the right models and keep looking until you find a decent one at a decent price.

Firstly though, have a look at this:

Look for big car low insurance class eg Vauxhall Grandland X - Group 12
Another high-riding SUV that's surprisingly low in the insurance rankings is Vauxhall's Grandland X, despite the fact that it's the physically largest and most overtly off-roady car Vauxhall makes.

Not only that, it also comes with all sorts of advanced and expensive kit like an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot, but in Group 12 it's on par with cars like the Citroen C1 and Fiat Punto!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 24/03/2026 08:18

I wouldn’t rush into buying a new car. There is a sweet spot to getting the cheapest renewal price, between 3-4 weeks before your current policy ends think.

If you can find an insurance broker with minimal fees they will do the leg work for you but do it asap. If not then use the comparison websites. The closer you get to renewal dates the more expensive it will get so make it a priority to sort it out in the next week or so.
