Post Miscarriage/Abortion Bleeding

Hello everybody,

I hope this reaches the right audience and I am hoping to seek advice. I have no friends who have had this happen as I am only 21 (though married with a good job so please try not to judge me, partner and I were super excited for baby and heartbroken at loss). Google doesn’t seem to help much. I do apologise if any TMI.

I had a scan following a bout of bleeding at 8 weeks and there was no heartbeat and measured a week behind so I was given some tablets to pass the baby. I took around 1pm, and by 4pm I was passing very large clots and cramping badly. The following day I was still passing clots and cramping, but much smaller/milder and after about 7/8 days it had tapered off with normal DC starting around day 10. I did a low sensitivity pregnancy test (1000miu) at day 18 which was negative, though my standard (25miu) ones are still positive.

Since then I have had on/off spotting which was brownish, indicating that the last bit was clearing out. Then yesterday I had some blood stained DC which was very clearly fresh blood, and then today it is pink rather than the brownish colour. Kind of like implantation bleeding and I am at day 21.

I guess my question is do you think I would be unreasonable if I was to go to the GP? Do you think it warrants a trip to the GP or is it normal?

Partner and I have been sexually active since around day 7/8 however as I still have HCG in my system I have been told that it’s extremely unlikely I would ovulate until HCG passed, with my period likely to be expected around 6-8 weeks post loss so I don’t believe it could be another pregnancy.

Thank you for reading.
Best wishes

You have my sympathy, how awful for you both. If you are unsure I would call your surgery and make an appointment. If its normal it will put your mind at rest, if not they will know.

Thank you so much for replying I really appreciate it. My doctors are so hard to get an appointment with so I would have to go private which incurs an excess, so I was hoping that I might get a little more advice from others previous experiences. Feels awful even having to write that as I wish nobody had to go through it 😔

Could you try your local hospital as they should have your details.

The hospital said that because the “after loss” pregnancy test was negative that its decreasing and wouldn’t warrant further investigation unless I had severe pain or a lot of blood. They said remained products of conception would’ve caused more issues.

I guess I will just have to wait and see! I can’t pinpoint ovulation as OPKs are still blazing positive too.

So heartbreaking to still see a positive test 😔

Possibly retained products, so look out for any signs of that, such as a bad smell etc.
Possibly renewed bleeding because you've been having sex. Whenever I've bled after any pregnancy, full term or early miscarriage, I've always found that exercising too soon starts the bleeding off again, even if it had pretty much stopped. I assume sex could have the same effect.

I wouldn't personally worry at this stage, unless you develop other symptoms.

You can ovulate when there is still a small amount of HCG in your system, so if you don't want to be pregnant this cycle don't have sex.

I ovulated about 5 days later than usual with early miscarriages. So don't assume you'll be waiting ages to ovulate. Everyone is different.

I am so sorry, I hope it sorts itself out quickly now for you.

are you in the UK ? Generally the gynae dept that provided your treatment would provide follow up if needed. But if this isn’t happening then 100% contact your GP tomorrow for support and review.

thank you for the reply. The hospital advised they don’t need to intervene due to the negative pregnancy test and my doctors have booked me in for a telephone call in 3 weeks. NHS is on its knees.

Thank you all for the replies though it is really appreciated
