AIBU to worry about Iran’s ballistic missiles reaching the UK?

There's a ton of news today about Iran hiding their ballistic missile capability, their range, and media pundits /talking heads ramping up fear. There is also a generation of us that lived through "Iraq has WMDs" and the associated skepticism. I am aware that the fog of war means one has to be careful, but the "news" today is concerning. I can see Iran lying about their capabilities.

Should the UK be worried? Can Iran hit the UK with a ballistic missile? Should we be preparing for this?

AIBU: dont worry about Iran's ballistic missile capability hitting the UK.
YABU: we should be concerned and prepare accordingly.

@catspyjamas1 And why would they? They're awful but not stupid. If the attack a Nato country they will be demolished. Don't think they are that stupid. Their main ennemies are Israël and the US. Since Trump has started this war I hope he will finish it so a new regime can take their place in Iran. If not, all civilian casualties will have been for nothing.

buymeflowers · 21/03/2026 21:17

Honestly no I don’t, I don’t think it would ever happen and I believe these stories to be planted to try and win popular support for military intervention in places we have no business in being.

Resprayingmyaferraris · 21/03/2026 21:20

@Notonthestairs I've got no idea what that is however i reas that wind farms interfere with the radar uses to get things down

Absolutely. Don’t fall for the scare stories. It’s a tactic as old as the hills

You do realise we have nukes

It would be a total death wish for Iran to fire missiles at us

People need to calm down and stop watching rolling news nothing is going on here that hasn’t happened before

The UK is not going to launch nuclear weapons in response to a conventional attack no matter where it's originating from.

The fact I’ve only seen it in the Daily Mail leads me to Very Much Not worry about it.

They were talking about it as a possibility on bbc news earlier 🤷‍♀️

Lemonfrost · 21/03/2026 19:56

I am confident Iran won't be firing missiles at us.

I believe they might try but not reach.

gamerchick · 21/03/2026 22:00

I'm more worried that everyone's looking at Iran and not paying attention to Russia personally and cyber attacks.

Trump poked a hornets nest and they came out stinging.

Itsafactitsactual · 21/03/2026 22:02

If they coulda, they woulda.

Fortunately we are not in range.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 21/03/2026 22:07

I listened to a podcast on Triggernometry recently, Infact I think I’ve listened to two regarding Iran and the problem with that regime is they are a death cult. They want to die. That’s a pretty unhelpful starting point when it comes to war and having ballistic weapons and trying to get nuclear weapons. I can see why the US was quite keen to prevent the imminent acquisition of nuclear weapons courtesy of Russia, but I also can’t see how this gets resolved anytime quickly.

It’s clear that the US and Israel vastly underestimated just how much weaponry they had. Am I worried they will blow us up? No. Am I worried that might decide they will do something that kind of takes everyone down alongside them? Yes.

So why is Germany developing Sky Shield? They use wind farms.

As far as I know, Germany isn’t bombing Iran.

Also in the Times and being discussed on BBC News at Ten.

I don't think that will happen either.

PinterandPirandello · 21/03/2026 22:33

Out of interest, where would the most important targets be in the Uk? Nuclear sites? Ports? Air bases?

My town is boasting about the drone factories popping up here. So probably here (an armpit of a town in Wiltshire).

AtomicBlondeRose · 21/03/2026 22:39

The fact is that if Iran has missiles capable of reaching Diego Garcia, that’s further than previously thought which therefore theoretically puts parts of Europe within range. So the news would naturally report that. It doesn’t mean Europe is, or ever will be, in direct danger of those missiles.

Both Sky News and Al Jazeera featured this in their live feeds in the last five hours FYI.

Why do British people think they’ll be the target of any country even when it’s clearly not a situation Britain are strongly involved in or physically near? We spent the whole of 2022 listening by to people say the same about Russia

do all countries do this or are Brits just particularly partial to centring themselves in any world event?!

Um, I am not a Brit but live in the UK. I have seem several news outlets and media pundits talking about this after Starmer allowed two UK bases to be used for "defensive" actions this morning, one of which is a relatively hot topic politically.

Perhaps the question to you should be, why do you assume everyone posting on mumsnet is British? Weird.

Are you a nationality who likes to centre themselves in every world event then?

Tel12 · 21/03/2026 22:54

It seems unlikely and I'm assuming that we have some defensive plans should it arise.

RudolphTheReindeer · 21/03/2026 22:57

I don't think they would bother as it would run the risk of us joining the war with America. Plus if they wanted to get at us they'd strike the RAF base in Cyprus which is within range.
