Old and grumpy re. Easter eggs

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 21/03/2026 18:22

I am currently being repulsed 🤣 by all the adverts on Instagram for Easter eggs that are filled half an inch or more thick with goo and stuff. What is this about? Surely the best thing about Easter eggs has always been that thin chocolate (although I’m fully on board with nice treats inside the thin chocolate egg, I’m not a mad woman).

Has anyone tried these - was it good or bad?

I bought a couple of hotel Chocolat ones for my family last year and they enjoy them. But I know what you mean, it's gone a bit too far!

Aiming4Optimistic · 21/03/2026 18:26

I was always disappointed that a creme egg Easter egg didn't contain all the crème, but instead came with 2 or 3 smaller eggs. Smartie eggs should be filled to the brim with smarties. We are royally ripped off with Easter eggs imo!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 21/03/2026 18:28

I do like the Hotel Chocolat ones but I’m not getting one this year, they are a lot of money

MidnightMeltdown · 21/03/2026 18:32

As a child, I remember being deeply disappointed to find Easter Eggs hollow. I always felt cheated!

blankcanvas3 · 21/03/2026 18:32

It’s the price of them that gets me. I’ve somehow spent £100 on easter eggs for an easter egg hunt for 3 kids.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 21/03/2026 18:33

Chocolate tastes shite now

A creme egg is half the size it was in the 90s, surely?

One tiny creme egg i got with an easter egg. Waste of money

GloiredeDijon · 21/03/2026 18:35

I got one of those with sludge in from M&S last year and it was grim. I actually chucked it in the bin after a couple of bites and I love chocolate so this was a first.

You absolutely don’t have to spend that.

TeenToTwenties · 21/03/2026 18:35

Easter eggs used to contain something.
It was a sad year when the insides started being packaged outside.

Aldi do a copy of it, can't compare to Hotel Chocolat as I've not had it in ages but it was good quality. I think it was about a tenner.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/03/2026 18:37

I get the Ferrero Rocher egg because the chocolate tastes nice and has hazelnut nibs in it.

That said, I do rather like the ideal of an Easter egg sized creme egg.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 21/03/2026 18:38

Thanks @MouseCheese87

BananaSkinShoes · 21/03/2026 18:39

Even a crème egg makes me want to puke, so I’m with you, OP.

SueBlime · 21/03/2026 18:44

I am convinced the manufacturers use a different recipe for the Easter egg chocolate than their normal offerings. It's generally shite. Having said that, last year I was given a Sainsbury's own brand egg and was pleasantly surprised how edible I found it.

I like a Hotel Chocolat egg but I don’t really want another one of those tins they come in.

The smallest Smarties eggs still have the loose smarties inside. I always get my kids one!

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 21/03/2026 18:49

Ive just had a thorntons one.
It tastes rank, like 1990's kinnerton advent calendar chocolate.

HOW much?! I just bought 4 boxes of 'egg hunt's from Aldi for my lot and that was £20, how much chocolate are your kids getting?!

(jealous, basically, would love that much chocolate, my waistline wouldn't) 🤣

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/03/2026 18:50

@KimberleyClark - you might be able to sell the empty tin online - there are people who buy empty tins on eBay. I am a sucker for nice tins, and have considered buying the tins empty from eBay, to save myself from the chocolate/biscuits/whatever they contained - sadly I lack the requisite self control, but there are stronger tin-lovers than me out there.

But when I was young the were hollow but they had a little tray of chocolates, like in a milk tray box. It was wonderful. Not the same now.

my mum had a cardboard one from the war that had chocolates in it.

I agree. Milk Tray, e.g. used to have a little tray of chocolates each side.

Yes! Me too!!

FromtheBalustrade · 21/03/2026 19:10

Crème eggs are not that much smaller than they were in the nineties. I know this because I vividly remember putting one in an egg cup with the intention of eating it with a spoon like a boiled egg.

Titsywoo · 21/03/2026 20:35

I've bought DD one of the M&S eggs that has a load of pistacho creme inside the shell. It was £18 which seems excessive but my kids are adults and only get one egg each so I'm happy to spend up to £20 on an egg (DS has a Lindt one that was £16).

Some of the stuff I have seen on social media is crazy. The shops are doing great I'm sure due to the influencers reviewing all the expensive eggs (and probably lying about how good they taste). So many people buying eggs from Harrods etc due to these people. I saw an egg from Louis Vuitton today that was over £200 - since when do fashion brands sell food?

MrsKateColumbo · 21/03/2026 20:37

I'm just annoyed that they no longer come woth cute little cups
