To ask if a size 18 should wear these dresses?

I’ve been gifted an M&S gift card and picked up these dresses. I’m a size 18, 162cm. I am having second thoughts about wearing them now though because I feel like they’re too short and would show too much of my legs

I think they look lovely. If you're conscious of your legs could you wear them as tunics over leggings or tights?

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 20/03/2026 16:59

There is no should or shouldn't here.

If you like the dresses and feel comfortable wearing them, then you should wear them.

If you don't like them and/or don't feel comfortable wearing them, then you shouldn't wear them.

Other people's opinions don't matter. This is about you and how the dresses make you feel.

I haven't voted because my opinion is irrelevant here.

Otterbabiesholdhandstosleep · 20/03/2026 16:59

How tall are the models? It’s entirely likely the dresses will be nearer to knee length on you at 162cm.

ForAmusedHazelQuoter · 20/03/2026 17:00

Totally wearable but would you wear them now it’s Spring?
Have you chosen them because they are reduced, would you prefer one fab dress?

I think so, I prefer to keep my arms covered so the long sleeves are a must

Will you feel self conscious in them ? If so, you won’t wear them so return.

They can be styled to minimise the amount of leg - if that’s the right way of saying it. Obviously a bare leg would feel more exposed that thick tights, knee high boots etc…

In terms of your size 🤷‍♀️. I don’t care what people wear in general - I would only really notice if the clothes were dirty, full of holes or didn’t fit properly so looked scruffy that way.

Whether or not they’d suit you/be flattering would depend on a few things like colouring, body type etc…

Best advice, try them on with a few diff options for tights, shoes, jackets etc and see how you feel.

I love the dark brown one.
Wear whatever you feel good in.

Me too. I’m really hoping it doesn’t cling to my belly

I don't see why not. It looks like a style that's flattering in most sizes. In fact it might look better on someone slightly bigger than a size 6 model.

Boomer55 · 20/03/2026 17:04

I’m older, but a size 10, and I wear what I like and what I’m comfortable wearing. If you’re comfortable in them, then go for it. 👍

I completely agree with this.

I know it's much easier to say than do, (and I could very well do with taking my own advice) but ignore what others say/think. If you like the dresses and you feel confident in them, wear them.

i often look at others the same size as me and think they look fantastic in what they are wearing but think the same on me is awful. I've come to realise it's confidence. Others look confident (whether they are is different but they give off the vibe) so look great, I don't and don't feel comfortable so don't think I do

Belladog1 · 20/03/2026 17:05

I'm a size 18 too and I used to cover myself in baggy long outfits to try and hide it.

But then I realised that I have great legs. Not when bare, but with tights on or leggings .... they're cracking. So I've started wearing knee length dresses with tights and I feel great.

Enjoy your new frocks. They are lovely

icreatedascene · 20/03/2026 17:09

If it makes you feel good then why not? I'm a big 16 but I wouldn't, because I'm not proportional. The cut of that dress would look very frumpy and oversized toddler on me. It would look even worse if worn as a tunic over leggings.

BauhausOfEliott · 20/03/2026 17:16

If these dresses weren't intended to be worn by women who are size 18, they wouldn't make them in size 18. Wear whatever you like and feel good in!

burlingtondrinks · 20/03/2026 17:33

Do you like them and do you feel nice when you wear them? Then yes, wear them. That’s the only rule you need for clothes! 😊

This is me too! They look lovely and you’ll look lovely! Stand tall and be proud of yourself!

JustMeHello · 20/03/2026 17:37

Do they make the dresses in a size 18? If so, then a size 18 should wear them if they want to.

BananaSkinShoes · 20/03/2026 17:40

No should or shouldn’t. You wear what you think looks nice.

What should a size 18 wear otherwise? Something long and baggy to cover themselves? Surely that’s worse?

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 20/03/2026 17:50

I think they are all gorgeous. I also don’t think they will be short on you anyway as models will be tall.

Spring maybe, but it's not warm enough here (SE)to be wearing anything less than a dress like this with something under it & something over it, leggings & warm footwear.

@confusedfrump

being size 18 is irrelevant really, on me (a similar dress size) they'd be past my knees 🤣

just depends whether you feel like your showing too much (ask a trusted friend if you can't tell/feel yourself).

I have no sensitivity on my right hand side (due to a stroke) so I have to be very careful what I wear as I can't feel if something has ridden up etc.& no one in public needs to see my bum!

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 20/03/2026 20:21

No two size 18s look exactly the same and I think you should wear whatever you like. For what it's worth, I am about the same size and I would be most likely to wear the brown one, because I like the proportions of it and because I'm not really a fan of very small floral prints (on people of any size).

lunar1 · 20/03/2026 20:25

I wouldn’t have worn them when I was an 18/20 they wouldn’t have hung nicely on me, I need more built in shape, but I’m a 10 now and they still wouldn’t look right on me, whatever size I am I’m top heavy and they would hang straight down from my boobs!

it’s not a size thing, it’s about how clothes hang on you.

MrThorpeHazell · 21/03/2026 09:11

I'd say "no" as they all look awful to me whatever your dress size.

Katemax82 · 21/03/2026 09:12

Why not? They aren't skimpy or anything. When I was a 16 to 18 I still wore nice dresses

iamtryingtobecivil · 21/03/2026 09:17

Depends where the waistline sits on you and what body shape you are. But not size related
