How much weight do you lose for your wedding?

Getting married in 6 months. Like most brides I want to look my best. I’m fairly happy with my figure as I’m a natural hourglass (a lot of my weight is on my boobs and butt) but wouldn’t mind being a bit more toned and leaner. But I still want to look like me. I told my family I want to lost 18 pounds and they think that is insane (currently 145, 5ft 3.5). I think that’s a normal amount to lose for a bride. Nothing extreme extreme.

edit: how much weight did* you lose for your wedding

I gained weight- we booked our wedding then started ivf, assuming it’d take ages: I was 8 months pregnant on my wedding day

DominoLover51 · 19/03/2026 21:10

I lost half a stone. I wanted to be able to say in years to come that I was under 8 stone when I got married. Sadly nearly 25 years later I’m a stone and a half heavier

HappyMamma2023 · 19/03/2026 21:15

I lost 13lb in 9 weeks. When I tried my wedding dress on in the shop it fit perfectly, I tried it on again at home a week later and couldn't get it on! The shop assistant must have had a special knack! I went to the gym most days, ate lots of salad, fish, chicken and rice, brocolli, vegs and with those big portobello mushrooms I'd put an egg and a couple of anchovies in and roast it. Lovely. It was boring but it worked I dropped down to 8st6lb and I looked great! But that was 10 years ago pre-mama I think it would be harder to lose the wright now. I tend to hover around 8st10lb and happy with that. Have a lovely wedding!

Squirrelchops1 · 19/03/2026 21:21

You're just at very top of healthy bmi so you could lose a few lb but why dont you get a PT instead? You could look infinitely smaller but be super toned and healthy without losing weight. You'd look better in your dress being toned than just flabby skinny.

Eenameenadeeka · 19/03/2026 21:25

I didn't lose any, but I was quite underweight already at that point of my life. I don't think the idea of needing a massive weight loss for a wedding is healthy, but wanting to eat healthy (and well, not restriction) and excercise is fine.

MrLarsonsNailGun · 19/03/2026 21:33

I worked really hard to get in shape for my wedding, I didn’t lose loads of weight but body composition changed, I think I dropped 7-8lbs overall, but lost the equivalent of 1st of fat in the 12 months leading up to the wedding.

Woke up on the day at 7st13lb which at 5ft 1, as exactly where I wanted to get to, and I felt great!

houseofisms · 19/03/2026 21:33

I got a dress from a sample sale. It was a one off dress designed by a designer for a fashion show so was designed for someone 6” and size 8! It couldn’t be altered. I had to lose 2st which was 1/2 stone under the minimum weight I go as verging on looking too thin (I’m 5’9)
it was the equivalent of a 2.5k dress that I got for £600 so I was going to fit into it!!!! (Years before fat jabs!)

Mammabear23 · 19/03/2026 21:39

Lose whatever makes you comfortable but make sure your dress will fit your smaller frame. My friend was so anxious she lost weight and on her wedding day her dress was loose (she'd only had a fitting a few months before) she couldn't get the corset tight enough and throughout the whole day she had to keep pulling it up 😞

RosesAndHellebores · 19/03/2026 21:39

I'm hoping your dh loves ypu as you are and that's the most important thing.

Do you want to look at yoir wedding photos for the next 30 years+ and think, I've never been that slim again.

OhDear111 · 19/03/2026 21:43

My DD is getting married later this year, and plans to lose a bit of weight. However the dressmaker who will be shortening her dress has a large banner on her web site saying she cannot reduce dresses by more than 2 sizes. So drastic weight loss is a problem.

I wanted to be able to say in years to come that I was under 8 stone when I got married.

Why? Confused

DominoLover51 · 20/03/2026 11:09

@JustGiveMeReasonI wanted to look and feel good for my wedding day and also wanted to say that I was that size once. I know it’s not rational, but I suppose it was personal pride. I remember an Ex’s Mother once telling me that when she got married she was just under 7 stone. Whilst I know that would never have been realistic for me, it did stick with me. The ex wasn’t who I married btw.

minipie · 21/03/2026 13:47

Just under 7 stone?? Did she get married at 13? That’s not a healthy weight for any adult woman.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 21/03/2026 13:56

Having a goal to lose weight (such as your wedding), if you are feeling a bit overweight is absolutely fine.

Bit it’s not standard to lose weight for your wedding just because you’re getting married.

Me, I accidentally put on half a stone, which was unfortunate!

In your shoes, I’d focus on eating well and healthily, and if you don’t already, exercising. But they’re positive changes for life, not just a six month period. Focus on sustainable changes rather than a punishing diet to reach a self-inflicted number.

BananaSkinShoes · 21/03/2026 13:58

None. But I was young and effortlessly thin. I‘m just under 5’9 and I think I weighed 117 pounds when I got married.

Bearbookagainandagain · 21/03/2026 14:04

Was pregnant and gained 8kg 😂

mondaytosunday · 21/03/2026 14:11

Well I bucked the trend and gained weight! But 18lbs in six months? Easy peasy. I generally lose weight about 10lbs a month, but as you have less to lose how about try 1lb/week? Very doable. Small changes. Measure and weigh, get walking.

Itsallsostressful · 21/03/2026 14:20

I don't know about weight loss before my wedding as try not to weigh myself much as it puts me in a bad place but I concentrated on toning up...went to the gym and "treated" myself to PT sessions with a fab PT who I knew from my gym classes. Felt really good on the day with doing this. Like others was warned at final fitting not to lose any weight !

Ginorchoc · 21/03/2026 15:26

My dress is a size 12 and I’m currently a size 14 so I’m dropping a dress size so because I’ll feel more comfortable in myself and the photos when I look back.

Wickedlittledancer · 21/03/2026 15:30

18 pounds is a huge weight loss in 6 months?!

this can’t be a serious comment, it’s 3lbs a month,, healthy weight loss is up to 8 lbs a month,Confused

Um yes it is, it’s perfectly healthy bmi for a 5ft or 5ft 1 woman.

ay30916 · 21/03/2026 15:33

I am 5ft 5 and I was 9st 3 on my wedding day. I did proactively try to slim down a couple of months before but I remember closer to the wedding the weight just dropped off me. Unfortunately I don’t have that problem these days.

popcornandpotatoes · 21/03/2026 15:34

None. I wonder how many grooms to be are worrying about this

Only if you're obese when you start

What on earth are you talking about. Of course it’s not just if you’re obese to start.
