How much weight do you lose for your wedding?

Getting married in 6 months. Like most brides I want to look my best. I’m fairly happy with my figure as I’m a natural hourglass (a lot of my weight is on my boobs and butt) but wouldn’t mind being a bit more toned and leaner. But I still want to look like me. I told my family I want to lost 18 pounds and they think that is insane (currently 145, 5ft 3.5). I think that’s a normal amount to lose for a bride. Nothing extreme extreme.

edit: how much weight did* you lose for your wedding

In my pre wedding days; a very good friend said to me to not put yourself under additional pressure to lose weight. And she was right, you have enough "stresses".

You also have timelines - the dress has to be ordered sometimes months before, and fittings are usually done a few times in the preceeding months, the last fitting is usually a few weeks before so definitely no weight loss in that time.

If youre happy as you are then order the dress and stop worrying about it; have a beautiful day

asnmum · 19/03/2026 13:52

losing that much would be fine - if it’s what you want - as you are currently just at the top end of healthy weight/into slightly overweight for your height. That looks very different on different people. Do what you want to do not what you think you should do or others do. If I were you I will focus on healthy diet so your skin glows and exercise that will tone the bits your dress will highlight - eg upper arms. Numbers and scales are not so important.

I lost about 7lb for my wedding by doing the above. Was within healthy range before and after that.

EggplantSurprise · 19/03/2026 13:54

None. I think it's utterly bizarre that (a) you assume every woman getting married does this as a matter of course and (b) that you announce your programme of weight loss to your family and friends.

How is 18 pounds a huge weight loss in 6 months?
If you diet sensiblly you can lose 2lb a week minimim, so 18 pounds in less than 2 months is normal not extreme.

2lb a week minimum is not a realistic amount to lose for a woman whose starting point is 145lb. Honestly I'd say 3lb a month, every month, including when getting closer to goal wait would be optimistic.

18lb in six months is 3lb a month.

18 divided by 6 = 3...

If you read the post, I said the previous posters assertion and the OPs intent were both unrealistic.

I can see wanting to lose a few pounds as you are small (I am too) but I wouldn’t do it “for the wedding”. Do it because you want to be healthier and stronger long term - maybe the wedding is an excuse to give you the momentum.

I do know brides who lost too much and their dress didn’t fit very well on the day (gaping at the bust especially) so be careful about dress fitting issues.

HappyAsASandboy · 19/03/2026 15:13

I didn’t lose any weight. I bought a dress that fit 6 months before my wedding and then stayed the same size.

dastardlydani · 19/03/2026 15:14

Annoyingly I never weighed myself but reckon I was about 9 stone (5ft 9). I was super stressed!

So maybe lost 10-14lbs. The only thing I actively did was really tone up.

HugoThatway · 19/03/2026 15:17

Going by BMI you are overweight.
18lbs in 6 months is fine and you'll be in the middle of the healthy BMI range.

Same. I think it's a nuts idea. Unless you plan on maintaining your weight loss after the wedding.

JLou08 · 19/03/2026 15:21

None. I actually put a few lbs on. Absolutely mad that you want to lose weight when you're happy with your figure. Just because a lot of people do it doesn't mean we all should.

Lampzade · 19/03/2026 15:27

I lost two stone in three months for my wedding and have never regretted it
l didn’t want to be one of those people who can’t bear to look at their wedding photos
Other photos you can throw away if you dislike them, you can’t do this with your wedding photos
Lose weight if you want to
Eat well and do some weight training and walking

ainsleysanob · 19/03/2026 15:34

Nothing! I was a 22 year old siren when I got married!

Auroraloves · 19/03/2026 15:38

I put on a bit as I was pregnant, I wish I looked like that now though.

just don’t lose too much as the
seamstress will only be able to take in so much on your wedding dress

Grammarninja · 19/03/2026 15:39

Stress led to me losing about 6 pounds by accident. My husband went on a serious diet and lost about 4 stone only to replace it with 6 stone within the year. Don't crash diet to look like someone else on your wedding day. If you have an hour glass figure, you're already winning the body stakes! Don't feck your metabolism up for one day x

NorthernDancer · 19/03/2026 16:05

I lost a stone through stress in the six months between proposal and wedding. I then took ill on our way to our honeymoon and spent the week in bed, so lost some more.

Mariooooocart · 19/03/2026 16:45

I got engaged on holiday so had already lost a stone and was down to my happy weight so had no weight to lose.

I got married a year later and maintained this until about 6 weeks from the wedding where I lost half a stone via stress. I had to have last minute dress alterations.

MeatyMagda · 19/03/2026 16:56

I tried to go on a diet a few months before my wedding, crashed and burned, and ended up putting on weight - shouldn’t have bothered trying

Winter2020 · 19/03/2026 16:56

If you want to lose a few pounds do it slowly and sensibly. If you crash diet you will lose muscle leading to weight gain when you begin eating more normally.

If you are mostly happy with your figure but want to look your best I would aim to lose 5lb and tone up with exercise rather than 18lb.

JustGiveMeReason · 19/03/2026 18:00

None.

But there is nothing wrong with looking at what you are eating, and thinking about what exercise you are doing if you weigh 10stone 5 at only 5'3".

But there are separate boards for both weddings and weight loss where you might have got more people on your wave length.

Elsvieta · 19/03/2026 19:31

What's the plan for after? Put it all back on? Or stay the same forever? If it's just a temporary vanity thing for the wedding, don't mess your metabolism up just for that. But if you want to keep it off, aim for something you can maintain - like maybe ten pounds loss?

I'm five foot four and currently ten stone eight - like you, curvy, big boobs. I've lost two stone on Mounjaro and reckon if I can lose another stone will look great. Would settle for 10lb. Don't fight your body type.

PollyBell · 19/03/2026 19:34

I didn't why would i?

doopdoopdidoop · 19/03/2026 19:34

i lost 16lbs before my wedding

grafittiartist · 19/03/2026 19:36
