Baby changing table for small bathroom

Hi everyone,
I’ve been searching online for what feels like ages and haven’t had any luck, so I’m hoping the collective wisdom of Mumsnet can help me out.

We have a small, awkwardly shaped bathroom and are expecting our first baby. We’ve realised that a wall‑mounted, fold‑away changing table would be the ideal solution. The problem is that it needs to open from the side rather than from the end where the baby’s head would be. The only ones we’ve managed to find that open this way are made of plastic and look like the ones you see in public toilets—definitely not what we’re after.

Has anyone come across a wall‑mounted unit like this that isn’t the standard plastic design?

Our backup plan is to use a simple folding table, but we’re unsure whether that would be sturdy and safe enough for everyday use. Any experiences or recommendations would be hugely appreciated!

Save yourself from the hassle and expense and use the floor.

I found a changing table really helpful after both C sections when I wasn't very mobile.

And I had it in the bathroom! But we live in an apartment so don't have to go up any stairs to get to the bathroom.

Switched to the floor when the babies started rolling.

why on earth would you need a changing table in your bathroom? A changing mat on the floor is the safest option and the one that has been used for millions of babies for years.

We had a bathroom one with DC1 because in laws insisted it was very much needed. It was wooden and fairly attractive, from John Lewis I think.

I did actually sell it on secondhand eventually and just used a mat with subsequent children.

There are so many “must have” baby essentials and equipment that you learn are actually rubbish. Top of my list of “baby things you don’t actually need” would be a changing table.

Thanks for everyone for your responses! I didn't think id have so many answers!

How do you prepare baby for bath if you don't have a table in the bathroom?

On a towel or mat on the floor. Or on your lap.

We used the ikea hemnes 8 drawer unit with a bog standard changing mat on top.
It’s been very useful as has been Ds clothes, nappy, toy and anything else storage now over the years. Mat just take off obviously when not needed.
Its great as its longer than most
so you have space to side for warm water if your using cloths for bum etc.

For a bath I just stripped baby in bathroom, bathed, wrapped in towel and walked him upstairs to his bedroom where unit was to dry and change him. ( our own bath is downstairs, but wasn’t a problem). I would strip upstairs in reverse if he actually had dirty nappy, clean his bum and then carry him down to bath just wrapped in towel.

Our bathroom is tiny so no point staying in there longer than necessary.
Ds bedroom has ancient en-suite ( but no bath) so I washed hands there. But most people have a sink on same floor at bedroom somewhere.

I actually did use a changing table for both my babies and wouldn't be without one. Much easier than getting up and down off the floor. I did have a spare mat for downstairs though.

If you are short on space you can get chests of drawers which have a changing table on top, which you can then remove once baby is bigger and just use it as a normal chest of drawers. I have also seen changing tables which fit on top of cots.
