Baby changing table for small bathroom

Mouche85 · 19/03/2026 10:12

Hi everyone,
I’ve been searching online for what feels like ages and haven’t had any luck, so I’m hoping the collective wisdom of Mumsnet can help me out.

We have a small, awkwardly shaped bathroom and are expecting our first baby. We’ve realised that a wall‑mounted, fold‑away changing table would be the ideal solution. The problem is that it needs to open from the side rather than from the end where the baby’s head would be. The only ones we’ve managed to find that open this way are made of plastic and look like the ones you see in public toilets—definitely not what we’re after.

Has anyone come across a wall‑mounted unit like this that isn’t the standard plastic design?

Our backup plan is to use a simple folding table, but we’re unsure whether that would be sturdy and safe enough for everyday use. Any experiences or recommendations would be hugely appreciated!

I didn’t know people purchased these for their homes. Thought they were for public restrooms

No one puts a changing table in the bathroom. If you’re tight on space elsewhere then I would either go for a cot top one and/or just have a mat (or 2) you can use wherever is most convenient- your bed, the sofa, the floor.

We did although it was standalone rather than wall mounted. It was very handy for washing hands after changing plus cleaning the baby after a poonami. It was one of those with the baby bath under the mat. It was beside the sink and had a hose to connect to the taps for filling. Also great for protecting your back.

That said, if your bathroom is that small, I’d just go with a mat.

Thanks for everyone for your responses! I didn't think id have so many answers!

How do you prepare baby for bath if you don't have a table in the bathroom?

Just put a mat on the floor

Flingitout · 19/03/2026 20:49

Don’t wreck your bathroom with an industrial changing table!

I have three kids under 5. Have never felt that I’m missing a changing table - mat on the floor is fine and you know they can’t roll off!

Bath prep usually involves a ten-second removal of clothes and nappy in the bathroom, no table needed!

AffableApple · 19/03/2026 20:51

You'll probably want a padded wipeable changing mat. One for each floor of your house. You'll use it on the floor, the bed, tables, chests of drawers. Keep it simple like this until the baby is born, and you'll see how things will work best for you in your space, and your routine.

Honestly, you wont use it.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 19/03/2026 21:00

I don’t know anyone who had a changing table. I never used one. Never ever needed one. The ones in public toilets are horrible. I think I used them twice! It’s all wrong having the baby sideways. Honestly OP, save your money. You really won’t need one.

SMM2020 · 19/03/2026 21:01

As others have said, just had a changing mat we carted around the house. Early days, baby bath on dining room table, I had C-sections so this was the best place for me. Changing mat on said table, undressed them, towel down on changing mat, baby transferred from bath and wrapped them up. Never had changing table with either of mine.

You undress them in the bedroom and plop them in the bath.

We have a 2000 sq ft house and most of our kids baths were either in the kitchen sink once they cpuld sit or in a snuggle in the kitchen before that.

You are 100% overthinking it.

One thing i DO recommend is 2 x nappy caddies (we had one with cream wipes and nappies) and 2x change mat
One upstairs one downstairs.

Makes life easier.

We used an IKEA cabinet as a changing table in our large bathroom with our first but it only ever got used for a quick dry after a bath for a few weeks until he was big enough to try and roll off it.

I know with your first you want all the things, and you have this vision in your mind of how it'll be, and when someone told me this I scoffed and though no, not me. But I'm gonna go ahead and say it anyway because I'll be damned if it wasn't true: you're going to change 99% of nappies in the house sat on the floor or your bed.

I'd recommend creating little changing stations in the living room, bedroom and bathroom. A caddy with nappies, some cream, some wipes and a foldable washable waterproof changing sheet. It's honestly all you need.

If you want to get something nice for your bathroom, get something for yourself. You're going to really need a calm, baby-free space to retreat to sometimes. Use the money and space you'd dedicate to the changing table and get yourself some nice bath bombs or a vanity cabinet or something instead.

Peonies12 · 19/03/2026 21:06

You def don’t need this. We bathed on the dining room table the first few months. Then once we used the bath we just took her clothes off whilst holding her or on the floor? You have to change them on the floor as soon as they move around more anyway, which will happen sooner than you think! Buy the bare minimum before your baby comes and you are actually living it! You need so much less than you think

Well, you might do once.

And when you walk into it in the middle of the night because you forgot to put it back up and left the lights off to avoid waking yourself and the baby even more than normal, you'll never use it again.

Yes yes to nappy caddies. DH raised his eyebrows when I bought one. We’ve used it every day for almost 2 years (alongside a second stash of supplies in the bedroom).

NuffSaidSam · 19/03/2026 21:09

A changing table, in any room, is a complete waste of money. Get a few mats and have one in each room (his bedroom, your bedroom, the bathroom, the living room) and a travel one for the nappy bag. Then you can change him on the floor (which is safer) or on any surface you like (chest of drawers, bed, sofa, kitchen table).

Glendaruel · 19/03/2026 21:19

We used achanging table for short time but as soon as they can roll found it easier with mat on floor. Its easier to change where their clothes are as sometimes you discover its a bigger change than planned!

FourNaanJeremy · 19/03/2026 21:29

I don’t know anyone who owns a changing table in real life. Even if you buy one they’re only really safe while your baby is a newborn - as soon as they can roll or crawl it would be strongly advisable to move to the floor as they can roll off surfaces in a split second. Not sure who’s made you think you need a changing table for your bathroom OP but I would save your money and not bother - they’re completely unnecessary.

IceyBisBack · 19/03/2026 22:09

We changed in the lounge on our laps or on a mat on the floor or on the bed. Wrapped them up then back to bedroom.

I always adhered to my Mum's golden rule - "Remember they can't fall off the floor".

Also 'it's a lot easier to clean up the mess with a towel and stick it in the wash, rather than have to carry around a cold, plastic mat with semi liquid substances on it or clean that and then clean what you used to clean it. Oh, and there's a baby in the middle of all this with it all up their back.'

Fold a bathtowel over, put it on the floor. Put baby on the towel and change. And then switch to pullups as soon as possible as it's much, much easier to get those on without resistance once they can stand up and run away.

SP2024 · 19/03/2026 22:29

We used a changing mat on top of a normal chest of drawers. In the nursery. When downstairs used a changing mat on the floor.

fancytoes · 19/03/2026 22:33

Yeah, the floor is best. Get yourself another bath mat if you want. You’ll be changing that baby wherever and whenever.

There are parents who do not have the dexterity of using a floor. I always went for any surface at waist height to change with a change mat . I was late 20s and definitely struggled with floor height! On a higher level the baby instinctively stays safe after about 1…obviously still needs full supervision!

Nat6999 · 20/03/2026 00:31

I changed ds on a changing mat on the bed or sofa when he was tiny & on the floor as he got bigger, never had a changing unit.
