Baby changing table for small bathroom

Mouche85 · 19/03/2026 10:12

Hi everyone,
I’ve been searching online for what feels like ages and haven’t had any luck, so I’m hoping the collective wisdom of Mumsnet can help me out.

We have a small, awkwardly shaped bathroom and are expecting our first baby. We’ve realised that a wall‑mounted, fold‑away changing table would be the ideal solution. The problem is that it needs to open from the side rather than from the end where the baby’s head would be. The only ones we’ve managed to find that open this way are made of plastic and look like the ones you see in public toilets—definitely not what we’re after.

Has anyone come across a wall‑mounted unit like this that isn’t the standard plastic design?

Our backup plan is to use a simple folding table, but we’re unsure whether that would be sturdy and safe enough for everyday use. Any experiences or recommendations would be hugely appreciated!

i agree with the others, I don’t think you need a changing table in the bathroom. Most of the early stages you will be feeding and changing in the living room or bedroom. I had a next to me cot so at night I would feed in bed and had a changing mat, nappies, wipes and spare clothes next to me on the bed so I could do a quick nappy change without moving from the bed (especially useful if you are in pain following the birth).

Malasana · 19/03/2026 12:31

I didn’t have a table at all. Mat or towel in bed or floor was fine.

HostaCentral · 19/03/2026 12:35

I used an antique pine dresser in the bedroom! You don't need a special piece of furniture, and certainly not in the bathroom.

Thanks for everyone for your responses! I didn't think id have so many answers!

How do you prepare baby for bath if you don't have a table in the bathroom?

I don’t think I did “prepare” them?! Just took their clothes off and dunked them in. What preparation are you anticipating?!

Old towel is perfect or a cheap baby change mat from a supermarket. I remember turning my back on DC1 when he was around 6 mo and he rolled off the changing table. For DC2, DC3 and DC4 it was a changing mat on the floor from birth 🤣

Edited to add DC1 was fine after the incident but that split second of it happening when I turned around to grab an item of clothing happened so fast.

Clothes off and bum wiped in bedroom, wrap baby in towel or leave naked if it's warm, carry to bathroom.
Honestly once you've got an actual baby this kind of stuff will all fall into place. You're overthinking!

Strip them off and wrap them in a towel in the bedroom then carry them to the bath. We've got 2 kids and have never had a changing table, just a changing mat that can go anywhere, bed or living room floor usually.

BendingSpoons · 19/03/2026 20:21

We had a padded changing mat we put on the floor. That way they are safe to be left there e.g. whilst you run the water, which you can't do on a raised changing table.

It's also not a given you'll be bathing them that often! My son hated baths at first, it was a quick hose down with the shower attachment every few days.

My big tip is that you'll save a lot of money if you find out what sort of baby you have first and buy accordingly, rather than trying to buy everything in advance.

PotatoRasta · 19/03/2026 20:25

Don’t over think it. Get bath ready before undressing baby. Then carry baby to bathroom once undressed!. After bath, wrap baby in towel and carry into the room.

xyzandabc · 19/03/2026 20:29

3 kids here and never had a changing table. Just a mat that got plonked wherever. Usually a floor or bed.

As for 'preparing' them for a bath. Run the bath. Take baby to bathroom, pop them on the floor, take clothes off, take nappy off, put them in the bath. I really don't think a table in the bathroom would be helpful to get a baby ready for a bath.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 19/03/2026 20:30

Agree with PP to use a mat on the floor. Most kids aren't toilet trained til 2.5 years. You'll be using a table for a few months until they get too wriggly, then changing on the floor and other places for 2 years+

PatsFishTank · 19/03/2026 20:32

3 DC, never used a changing table. We had one mat which we just put on the floor of whichever room we were in. Much safer to use the floor as the baby can't roll off.

Onetwothreefourgo · 19/03/2026 20:33

Definitely no need to a changing table. We just used a changing mat and put it in on the bed/floor etc. For baths, take their clothes off in the bedroom or hallway and then carried them in! (We used small baby baths at the beginning usually in the lounge!)

Betano · 19/03/2026 20:34

I’d be prepared to spent a lot of your life on the floor once baby arrives, OP

lazyarse123 · 19/03/2026 20:36

We used a baby bath in the living room in front of the fire. No idea if you can still get them. My kids are in their 30s. Then used the baby bath inside the big bath until they got big enough to all go in together. Changing mat or knee. I am that old.

Peggymoose · 19/03/2026 20:36

I had 2 c sections and changed mine on a mat on the kitchen island when they were very small as it was a good height! Obviously you don’t wander off and leave them up there. For baths, put the mat on the floor, strip the baby off, transfer to bath then wrap in towel and take them and the mat through to your bed to get them dressed. Put the mat on the bed so they don’t wee all over it Grin

AnonKat · 19/03/2026 20:36

We have a changing mat on a chest of drawers. But mostly change him on the sofa or floor.

PollyBell · 19/03/2026 20:37

We used the onw from ikea

Lemon1111 · 19/03/2026 20:40

I bought an expensive one to go on the cot and I used it maybe twice, I had a c section and it was the wrong height for me. You will be changing the baby on the bed or on the floor don’t waste your money like I did, buy a big padded changing mat I’m still using mine and he’s just turned two x

Dellmouse · 19/03/2026 20:41

I have a chest of drawers with a roll proof changing mat on top which we used for almost two years - now he wants to be on the floor!
For baths we just used to lie him on the bath mat to get him undressed and then after would
wrap in a towel and take to the changing table.

3691nd · 19/03/2026 20:43

Waist height table will work anywhere with a change mat .

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/03/2026 20:43

I mostly bathed DD in the kitchen sink until she grew out of it. But for the best part of a year she fitted beautifully and I didn’t have to lean down.

Same here. Washing up bowl for the baby and draining board with changing mat for drying! Definitely worked for a few months.
