AIBU to wonder why people refuse to move their cars?

I’ve recently moved to a flat. It’s a new build and there’s still some work being done to the site. This week and next they are working on the parking area and redoing it. They’ve sent a letter to ask that people park elsewhere as the whole parking area will be unavailable. They also put a note on both communal doors and the site managers have told people about it also.

Yet yesterday morning and this morning there are 3 cars still sitting there. Even if they don’t care about complying wouldn’t you worry about your vehicle possibly being damaged? There are massive vehicles going in and out and all sorts of substances that I wouldn’t want on my(non existent) car.

A petty issue I know but I am wondering why they’re choosing to bury their heads in the sand and if they’ll have any rights if their cars are damaged.

People are cunts.

How long ago were the notifications sent?

People could be away?

NewYearNewMee · 17/03/2026 10:26

Well I’d hope no one would refuse just on principle, that seems super petty. Saying that locally people have left their cars on roads due to be resurfaced, they work around them (which always ends up looking messy!).

Perhaps they’re on holiday? Or working away and haven’t seen the notices? 🤔

Ohfudgeoff · 17/03/2026 10:26

Maybe they are away on holiday?
Maybe they're in hospital?

A month ago and the notifications are still up on the door and have been for some time.

And no, they’re all here. I’ve seen them lately.

This could be an answer for practically any thread

Think if I start posting it on every thread I’ll get banned?

They may be working away, on holiday, temporarily living away to care for relatives etc, maybe abroad living in a holiday home over Winter? You really can't assume everyone who owns a car in your block is actually living there. Some of the cars may be broken down and unable to be moved, pending the owner being able to afford the break down truck/garage. Some parking spaces may be rented out to people who don't live in your block and won't have received a letter nor seen the signs.

Excellent points which explain why for other flats but they don’t apply to mine. There are only 12 flats here. I know all of my neighbours and I regularly see them getting in and out of their cars but it is a valid explanation of why others may not move theirs.

Not if you add ‘(disclaimer: obviously NAPAC)’.

OP, We had this my road during a deep gully clean. One car ended up being removed by a low loader to god knows where.

And one woman did run out of her house just in time shouting, ‘oh my god I didn’t realise it was today!’ and the workmen let her drive her car through the barriers just in time.

It was entertaining in a ‘WTF?!’ way.

So you've seen every single neighbour in the day(s) during which the work is being done?? Do you have an "in/out" board to check on them?

Of course not but I’m ground floor and WFH. I see them going in and out of their cars as my bedroom faces the car park, checking their mailboxes which are all grouped together and walking past when they take their dogs out on the path which my living room faces or walking to the supermarket/town centre which the path takes them to. I see far more of them than I did my neighbours when I lived in a house and there are only 12 homes and 2 people max in each so it’s easy to know if you haven’t seen anyone for a while.

I think that I’d have to abandon my car permanently if it’d been taken away like that. I’d be much too embarrassed to claim it. Hopefully the owner didn’t have too much trouble in getting it back.
