AIBU to question non-assistance dogs being allowed in Primark?

Coleen Rooney apparently has a new range in Primark. I saw the start of a video by someone who fancies herself as an influencer checking it out with her Cavapoo. Since when are dogs allowed in Primark that aren't assistance dogs? Is it crazy to think dogs are now ubiquitous?

I always feel sorry for the staff who get left to clean up any messes these dogs leave behind.

I worked in a shopping centre where dogs were banned (obviously excluding assistance dogs) but people still bought dogs in. I had no problem asking them to leave as it would have been up to me to clean any messes up. We often had to clean up food waste/packets dumped in the store so I had no hope that a customer would clean up dog poo.

I was shopping yesterday and noticed a 'pet clean up station '. Gross! That they've had to put that there because people are letting their dogs piss and shit in the store. I love my dog but I don't want to take her shopping.

hahabahbag · 16/03/2026 14:44

There’s usually pampered pooches in John Lewis at the mall but usually being carried, I’ve never seen a larger proper dog in there. My late ddog was very well behaved but his hair got everywhere, not suitable for clothes shopping plus he wouldn’t be interested in it, his interests were simple, parks, woods, beaches and pubs😁

A few months ago a woman took her 2 dogs to a&e (apparently where her emotional support animals)

I walked past a local hair salon recently where they'd put a hand written notice on the door asking clients to make sure their dogs had been walked and done their business before coming to appointments. A human salon not a dog groomers. Absolutely no need to take a non service dog to the hairdressers and have them peeing or shitting on the floor. Not fair on the dog, the staff or the other clientele.

I can only guess they thought “oh it’s outside it’s fine” Accident waiting to happen

Exactly. A military festival isn’t the first thing that comes to mind for being quiet and unlikely for loud noises, bearing in mind due to fireworks alone it’s one of those almost universally accepted truths that dogs are startled by loud noises.

Greedybilly · 16/03/2026 15:19

@ExtraOnionsvery well put and very funny!
I just went into a charity shop women with dog inside - dog stank and horrible shrill bark - owner oblivious ofcourse. Horrible.

I don’t disagree with you, but I don’t think children find it fun either! Traipsing around John Lewis screaming and the constant supply of snacks to keep them amused whilst their sticky little fingers explore their surroundings.

Children have annoyed me way more than dogs, I don’t want to have to interact with your kid on an evening out and I don’t want it touching me either, throwing food around or standing on the seats. Went out for Sunday lunch a few weeks ago, came out of the toilet cubicle to find a child vomiting on the floor. I can go to dog free establishments, we don’t have any child free establishments though.

Just no basic respect anymore, it’s a bloody free for all.

I have neither kids nor dogs so no skin in the game, but there are a few obvious differences - the main one being that children can't be left home alone, whereas nearly all dogs can (and should be!). Also children are either toilet trained or wear nappies, there's minimal risk they will pee on the floor, even if they could potentially make other types of mess.

Chersfrozenface · 16/03/2026 15:25

I don't think it is fair on the dogs, and it isn't nice for people who don't like them, but it is what it is unfortunately. Everyone is losing £ and it makes it easier to accommodate more customers.

But if the businesses lose customers who don't want to shop and dine with dogs, they're no further forward.

No you wouldn't. I doubt you'd risk arrest for that.

Don't get me started on this. They’re everywhere. I was in Louis Vuitton in Selfridges a few days ago and there were people walking around with them, yet the guards stopped two girls entering with lidded coffee cups because of a no drinks policy. Absolute madness.

I hate dogs personally so I am biased but it’s the sheer lack of consideration for others that these entitled dog owners have, I know of many owners who wouldn’t dream of doing this so it’s not all of them, but it’s enough to be significantly noticeable now walking around stores.

Chersfrozenface · 16/03/2026 15:32

Dogs are not allowed on seats on public transport.

Not even assistance dogs.

Anyone who puts their dog on a bus/train seat is an antisocial tosser.

BarnacleBeasley · 16/03/2026 15:38

I wouldn't bring my dog into a clothes shop but if I did, he definitely wouldn't wee there.

I don't see that there's a particularly good business rationale for allowing dogs into Primark. I live in a tourist area though and I do think it makes sense to allow them into cafes and gift shops, and all the sorts of places that rely on passing trade from people who are likely to be out with their dog and may decide to pop in.

FourSevenTwo · 16/03/2026 15:39

Some people are animal lovers, treating their dogs appropriately, adjusting their own plans to suit the dogs, and teaching them to be comfortable at home alone for a while.

Some people love themselves, get a dog to be their accesory and channel their wannabe superiority through them. Those people take dogs to shops and put them on seats when they don't belong while talking about fur babies.

I hate it. I have an allergy and the thought of of dogs brushing against clothes and home wares makes me feel itchy.

i can’t believe it’s any fun for the dogs either.

Tbh I wouldn’t take my dog shopping either but surely you will always have this risk with assistance dogs?

There aren’t that many assistance dogs around — the risk is lower.

I am a fully paid up member to the cult of dog by the idea of mine being inside anywhere but my own how or the vets gives me anxiety. But he is a) feral and b) mad.

I can't even take him in the pet shop because he pees and shoplifts.

I absolutely love dogs but agree it’s gone too far. I was really surprised to see one in and out of the clothing rails in John Lewis. Who wants to pay money for clothes with dog hair on them?

Nutmuncher · 16/03/2026 15:57

I suppose for those of us who don’t want dogs in shops the best solution is to complain to the stores themselves when ever you see one in there.

Pistachiocake · 16/03/2026 16:04

Some business owners say they can many more complaints about kids than dogs. If the dogs are biting people/they're rubbing them all over the clothes then it's an issue, otherwise wouldn't bother me. It's not safe to leave dogs in cars/tied up, so if people have limited time, and are out with their family walking the dog/nipping for a meal and want to pop into the shop, there's no way round it. Like with kids, you can't leave them alone for too long/might not have anyone else to stay at home with them (before anyone says, unlike dogs, young kids obviously shouldn't be home alone at all). Businesses that accept dogs tend to do better, but I don't know if that would apply to one like Primark, or not.

So, high end shop has a policy of not allowing people with lidded coffee cups inside. However, it will allow dogs, which can and probably are leaving hair, dander and other “remnants’ behind on products and have the potential to pee, be sick or 💩 while inside the shop ? Make it make sense.

I was in Sostrene Grene yesterday and a dog was sniffing every product on the lowest shelf. Also was eating my Christmas dinner in a restaurant, woman behind me was cuddling her dog with its head over her shoulder - meaning its nose was nearly touching my hair. I did have to say, do you mind? But she didn’t know what I was referring to.

YABU to be eating a Christmas dinner in March (and for not welcoming dogs everywhere 🐾🐾🐾)
