AIBU to question non-assistance dogs being allowed in Primark?

FlimsyMimsy · 16/03/2026 07:56

Coleen Rooney apparently has a new range in Primark. I saw the start of a video by someone who fancies herself as an influencer checking it out with her Cavapoo. Since when are dogs allowed in Primark that aren't assistance dogs? Is it crazy to think dogs are now ubiquitous?

I don't like dogs, and I don't like dogs in shops from that perspective, but in terms of the slobber and yuck...they're kinda like hairy toddlers. Toddlers get their manky hands on things, sneeze on things, slobber on things. I think you have to approach shops with the view that nothing is really 'clean' if it's in that lower zone! I suppose the problem is more double trouble now if you have children and animals making a mess.

I'm so fed up of the new fad of dogs being everywhere.

Drives me nuts - some daft woman was dragging a small dog round Brandy Melville in Covent Garden a few weeks back. It nearly got stomped on by the thousand teenagers that cram in there. There are places for dogs, but the world's busiest shop is not one of them (see also all restaurants).

I have a well trained Labrador and many people take to him but I am always mindful that not everyone likes dogs. I am grateful that some pubs are dog friendly but don't expect it, some like Wetherspoons bar them as is their right but I cannot get round this craze for letting dogs into shops

I’ve noticed this too recently and think it’s gross. Dogs in a department store in the children’s department. I said very loudly ‘what kind of idiot brings their dog to a department store’ while looking at the stupid family who had brought it, they had the decency to look a bit sheepish. I can’t believe shops now allow this. Nowhere is immune from the cult of dog.

We are taking ours to choose her own Jellycat at Selfridges in a couple of weeks 🤷‍♀️

We go to London regularly and dogs are allowed (and are taken) everywhere. Including very expensive restaurants, with tables VERY close together (so the people at the next table are dining with the dog as much as its actual owners are). After this weekend, where it has reached levels I have never seen before, I’ve adopted a ‘if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em’ mentality and I’m bringing ours with us next time.

corblimeyguvnr · 16/03/2026 11:26

Who wants dog hair all over clothes in shops?

Farewelltothatid · 16/03/2026 11:29

I used to get really annoyed that my local library used to allow a woman to bring a non assistance dog in. It was a virtually open plan building and she used to stand at the library desk chatting to the assistants for ages while the blooming dog stood there barking.
That dedicated library building has now closed and the library facility has now moved to the ground floor of the local council office building, much against the wishes of the local community, including myself. But. They now have a big sign on the door saying No Dogs, apart from assistance dogs. Which i'm extremely pleased about. I don't know if someone complained or there was an incident or the library staff now have to comply with council rules or whatever but I'm very pleased.

I like dogs. But I like dogs in appropriate places . And libraries, shops, shopping centres, supermarkets, restaurants etc are not appropriate places. I'm not keen on them in cafes either.

I declined to buy cushions from a low shelf in John Lewis and jumpers the same in Uniqlo Battersea Power Station because dogs are allowed in and snuffle and drool their way around.

And dogs allowed to sit on seats on trains and tube.

I've just left a cafe where a labrador was on his hind legs, paws on the counter where milk, sugar and cup lids are kept. Mind boggles.

There was a dog sat on a chair licking the table in a local garden centre cafe at weekend 🤮

FGS there is a long thread in this in AIBU already. Bottom line is these are businesses, they have made a business decision to be dog friendly. There are many places that aren’t.

Dogs are not allowed to sit on seats in trains but their owners think they are.
I had a long argument with a woman who put her dog on a train seat. I told her if she didn’t take it off then I would. I was serious.

Some people will bring there dog anywhere. There was a military fesival near me last year. Loads of cannons going off and tanks blasting. Loads of terrified dogs as well, just a ridiculous place to bring them

I don’t disagree with you, but I don’t think children find it fun either! Traipsing around John Lewis screaming and the constant supply of snacks to keep them amused whilst their sticky little fingers explore their surroundings.

Children have annoyed me way more than dogs, I don’t want to have to interact with your kid on an evening out and I don’t want it touching me either, throwing food around or standing on the seats. Went out for Sunday lunch a few weeks ago, came out of the toilet cubicle to find a child vomiting on the floor. I can go to dog free establishments, we don’t have any child free establishments though.

Just no basic respect anymore, it’s a bloody free for all.

Yep, i feel exactly the same way.

I had a beautiful little dog for 10 years and I loved her with my whole heart.

I wouldnt have dreamed of taking her into shops, restaurants, coffee shops etc. For both her sake and the sake of the people around me. And it annoys me endlessly that so many people insist on doing it. It's not fair on the dog. It's not fair on people who don't like dogs. It's not fair on shops who then have even more cleaaning issues. It's not fair on people who might be allergic.

I saw a woman in a coffee shop whose dog did a wee on the floor and she was so blase. She did sort of half heartedly wipe it up but clearly the staff had to rush over with a mop. Infuriating.

“Is it crazy to think dogs are now ubiquitous?”

No they absolutely are. I can’t stand it!

I am not convinced this is true. I think it's more that stores don't feel they can tell their customers NOT to bring their dogs in. I often notice that there ARE stores/restaurants etc that have "We are dog friendly" signs up but many don't.... and yet, in the dogs come....

Mumofyellows · 16/03/2026 13:09

We take ours to dog friendly cafes and pubs if we stop off during a walk and they will come into the garden centre or occasionally a dog friendly shop if I happen to need something and the shop explicitly allows (like Robert Dyas for eg in our town) but wouldn’t actively take them shopping as an outing as they don’t massively enjoy it, I always things dogs in big shops look unhappy and I don’t blame them.
people do go over the top on both ends, with trying to take their dogs everywhere but also with actively displaying their displeasure in seeing a dog. I personally find small screaming children very annoying but I don’t have a choice to go to child free shops, cafes and restaurants.

Owners of those dogs are complete and utter morons!

OonaStubbs · 16/03/2026 13:37

People who don't like dogs in shops and eateries need to start putting their money where their mouth is and refuse to spend money in those places and inform the owners why they are doing this. Moaning about it on the internet doesn't do anything.

Catcatcatcatcat · 16/03/2026 13:43

Dogs are allowed in most shops now aren’t they?

I love seeing dogs when I am out and about so I can’t say it bothers me.

I can only guess they thought “oh it’s outside it’s fine” Accident waiting to happen

SabrinaThwaite · 16/03/2026 14:06

Large slobbery dog had lain down in a shop the other day, the owner had been unable to get it to move so had just dropped the lead and stormed out to the pavement. One of the shop staff had to usher it out (it wasn’t a happy dog).

Skybunnee · 16/03/2026 14:06

Wetherspoons bans them

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/03/2026 14:12

Never seen a dog in a shop where I live, only outside.

Plinketyplonks · 16/03/2026 14:22

I thought this yesterday. Not Primark but I was in an independent food shop on Saturday, the kind that sells lots of health food stuff and loads of kinds of humous. Down the aisle came the most enormous dog, huge and fluffy (maybe a Samoyed?). I thought why on earth does it have to be in the shop? Why can’t it just be tied up outside while the owner shops, it’s not like a supermarket where you might be in for ages. Small shop. Massive dog. Bit fed up with these cases!
