Delusional sellers on Vinted

I’m wondering why some people on Vinted price items that are clearly worth nowhere near what they’ve been priced at? Just seen some old, well-worn Doc Marten boots, with scuffs, for £160. There’s plenty of the same ones in better condition for around £70, even brand new ones for about £130. I don’t even think they’re as much as £160 to buy new. Do people just not research how much they’re items are worth or are they chancing it in case some idiot comes along and actually buys it?

If they’re willing to wait for the right person to buy it, what’s the issue? People pay all sorts of prices 🤷‍♀️

FrenchBunionSoup · 16/03/2026 07:28

Well, they just won't sell then. I just scroll past anything that I think is unreasonably priced.

Or they might eventually sell but take ages to do so. I recently sold a jacket after it had been listed for about a year and I didn't mind.

Netaporter · 16/03/2026 07:29

I think when it comes to shoes, there is a market for ‘well worn’ shoes for gentlemen with a proclivity 😉🤮 They are usually priced to reflect that.

I opened this literally expecting it to be about an item if just bought! 😂

In my case, I'd bought something on Vinted but the courier couldn't deliver it (no fault of either mine or her's) and it was returned to the seller who agreed to relist it for me. She put it up for a silly price so that others wouldn't buy it. Essentially , the price was earmarking It for a private sale. It could be something like that?

Otherwise, some people are often a little ignorant. They see something like their item listed on eBay or something for a high price and put theirs for the same without understanding that the listed price is not the same as the sold-for price.

Toastersandkettles · 16/03/2026 07:31

They probably won't sell them then. I'm currently looking for something that was £30 new, but has been discontinued, so Vinted sellers now have it up for around £100-£130. There have been a few up for some time because no one is willing to pay that silly price. I'll just wait a few months for the price to come down again.

The phrase “well worn” is also starting to appear regularly on bras too. Puke indeed!

GloiredeDijon · 16/03/2026 07:43

So many delusional sellers in numerous ways.

I frequently see things listed for the price they cost new from a shop as confirmed by the price tag in the photo.

Why on earth would anybody buy an item from Vinted in that case?

Unless it was rare and discontinued, but that isn’t the case in those I have seen.

Descriptions saying “just want what I paid for it” or similar.

Who are these people and what on earth does the rest of their life look like?!

Yep. I guess they’ve moved in from ‘trashed tights/knicker’ on EBay 😂

I only know about the Vinted thing after a thread on here was from a poster asking why a man was offering unprompted 4x the price for a pair of shoes she had up for sale that were genuinely well worn…absolute eye opener

FeelingSadToday1 · 16/03/2026 07:51

I was after some specific boots recently but couldn’t afford them new (£199). Found them on Vinted New with tags for £149. watched them for a while hoping the retail boots would go down in January sales. They did, to £99! So I messaged seller to advise and offered her £85 for hers and she said no, £149 is my minimum price 🤣 so I bought them new.
just checked and they are stil listed, 11 months now 😬

I saw a new (no tags) Zara vest top - just plain white - listed for £20 the other day. Maybe it genuinely did cost that new, but it was nothing special; you could find the exact same thing in any high street store. Why would I pay £20, have no return rights if it didn’t fit and potentially wait up to a week for it to arrive when I could just buy a genuinely new one direct?

Yeah, it's like a marker for the fetishists. Just block the ones who ask for a photo of you wearing them. They're just asking for free wank fodder.

Wildgoat · 16/03/2026 08:04

I’ve noticed some people price really high and if just sits there, generally I ignore those sellers.you spot them immediately. But one it was a jumper I fancied, she was charging more than it acrually cost from the retailer but in the sale. So I messaged her with a link and said it’s in the sale, your price is about 2o percent above, but happy to buy if the price drops a little below sale price , she said no movement, so I just bought from the retailer. She’s still not sold it.

I see if quite a lot, people pricing so high they can’t sell the item.

it just seems pointless to me, like you’re wasting your own time.

donatellasfoot · 16/03/2026 08:05

I’ve been tempted quite a few times to message sellers to ask if they realise that once postage is paid, their item ends up more expensive than the new one in JD, Office etc. I never have. I imagine I’d not get a very positive reply!

TalulahJP · 16/03/2026 08:14

it’s the same on ebay where it’s free to list, so “no sale no fee”. it’s therefore worth a try to sell something for a highly inflated price.

i bought a shein dress for £20. prob cost the seller a fiver (guessing as ive never bought from shein) oh well sigh too late now. just as well i really like it.

at least i didn't buy the apparently “rare” (that word is in its sale listing) ornament i liked at £160. the same one is on multiple times for £10-£12. madness to attempt £160 !!

Usernamechanging · 16/03/2026 08:24

the joy of Vinted is that for more mainstream shopping, there's always more than one of the same thing hanging about. If it's not the right price, you can guarentee there'll be one along very soon at a price you're prepared to pay. I pop things in my liked box and have learnt that if it goes before I've had time to properly consider, there's always something else to take its place.

I agree and I use this to teach the algorithm what I like.

I add stuff which I have no intention of buying due to the ridiculous pricing and a few weeks later Vinted will show me another identical one at a more reasonable cost so I can snap that one up.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/03/2026 09:21

I suppose they’re just eternal optimists, thinking that someone is going to be stupid enough to pay it.

Or…get your big hairy male partner/friend/brother to wear them for a photo and send him that instead. That’ll ruin his wank 🤣

Hobsonschoiceofhob · 17/03/2026 15:08

@Wildgoati had this exact scenario. A new with tags item that I knew was in the sale for £8 less than her price. So explained and offered and just got a flat no !

This is exactly what I do too with things that I like but feel are priced unrealistically. On a few occasions the sellers behind these listings have sent through a small discount asking me if I would like to buy and I tell them that unfortunately their pricing is outside what I am prepared to pay for that particular item and have just added it to my favourites to train the algorithm to show me more when they appear. On one occasion the seller asked me what I was prepared to pay and came back a couple of weeks later to see if I was still interested

randomusernam · 17/03/2026 15:15

Recently looking for a kindle. Loads of the new ones were prices for more than Amazon had it. Some were £10 off Amazon price but why would I buy from you for such a small discount when I can have free returns for a small amount more. One person had a big chunk out the corner and wanted £70 for it. Only £30 off when I can buy on Amazon. To me it’s madness. If I’m buying something from vinted, even new I want it for almost half price or I’ll just get it new myself.

Fiddlesticks1 · 17/03/2026 15:46

I queried with a seller, selling new item with tags that by the time I had paid postage and buyers fee it was way more than it was selling for in the shop. Their reply was did I want it. Crikey no I didn’t.
last summer someone was selling flip flops showing a picture of them wearing them and they had nail fungus. What the heck you couldn't even have paid me to have them. Yuk.

sunflower85 · 17/03/2026 17:01

Funnily enough I’ve just seen the same thing, I was looking for a Scout shirt for my son, there was a very wrinkled second hand one on Vinted for £35, it’s £25 brand new from the Scout shop 🤣
