AIBU thinking bathroom ceiling stains are vape residue rather than mould?

I believe my son vapes in his bathroom, there is very poor ventilation. AIBU in thinking these stains are from vape residue or are they from mold, which my son argues is the case. Photos enclosed.

I'd say that was mould - the spot pattern gives it away.

Voted YABU. For not installing an extractor fan… If you know that the bathroom has poor ventilation, you should take steps to ensure that doesn’t cause any issues before leaping to accusations of vaping “causing damage to” your property…

So do you think it’s mold or vape residue?

Mould

You'd smell the vape.

I thought bathrooms had to have ventilation by law.

Looks like mould. Vape stains are yellow in my experience

Willowkins · 15/03/2026 00:52

Just to add, you could try antifungal paint as a cheaper option to fix this. It does sound though like your real problem is that you don't want your son to vape and that's a completely separate conversation.

The ceiling does have yellowing to add

I’ll have to give it a try, thank you!

It's mould. Vape residue wouldn't be that colour. Get it cleaned. Paint with a good mould resistant bathroom paint and get some ventilation sorted.

There is a yellow tint on the ceiling, so wondering if this means it is vape residue? What should I use to to clean it. Many thanks

Mould and it looks like it’s been previously wiped that’s why it’s patchy

In that case vape could’ve added to the discolouration but I think the mould is more from the lack of ventilation. When I had a mould patch I scrubbed twice with mould remover then painted over with anti condensation paint that I’d added Dryzone anti mould additive to. But I think you need to sort out the ventilation because if there’s a lot of moisture it will condense anywhere it can

Looks like mould.

You need something called Bactdet and Halophen. One removes it, the other stops it coming back.
